좋은 어린이집의 의미: 보육교사와 어머니집단의 목소리에 귀 기울이기

This study aimed to find the meaning of quality child care centers from the perspectives of teachers and mothers. The participants in this study are 10 teachers from five child care centers in Daegu and 11 mothers who had their children enrolled in child care centers in Daegu. The data for the study was mainly collected from individual interviews with the participants. The findings reveal that the participants have a variety of perspectives on the topic within and between the groups but all the participants emphasize the same aspects as good teachers and open child care curriculum in defining quality child care centers. In addition, while the teacher participants think that child care centers should be considered as public schools and individual needs should be adjusted for all the children in the center, the mother participants wanted individual needs to be considered prior to those of the whole class. This study suggests that all the groups involved in child care should be reminded that teachers and mothers have different perspectives on the meaning of quality child care centers and the parties concerned should make a consistent effort to improve the quality of child care through meaning-making processes by understanding and respecting each other’s values, experience, and perspectives.

This study seeks to illuminate meanings of quality child care from maternal perspectives shaped by the values and experiences of nine mothers, each with a child enrolled in a child care center located in Daegu. Four major themes emerged through an analysis of semi-structured interview data. The findings reveal that the concept of ‘quality’ child care had different and dynamic meanings which depended on each mother’s personal experiences and family situation. The participating mothers emphasized that the communal life inherent in child care centers works best when everyone involved make meanings of quality child care together. They perceived that this can take place where there would be a trust in child care providers based upon an open door policy and the publicness assuring that the child care center gives priority to young children’s well-being and is concerned with social justice and harmony. This summary of the findings indicates that, while there are diverse voices among parents, they are a major stakeholder group in the day care enterprise and must be listened to and respected. This is achieved through an open-minded meaning-making process, which, at the least, would include administrators, teaching staff and parents in comprehensive discussions of child care philosophy, curriculum, management, and practices. 본 연구에서는 어머니의 관점에서 바라보는 ‘좋은’ 어린이집의 의미를 알아봄으로써 이들의 보육에 대한 가치관과 경험을 조명하고자 하였다. 대구 지역 어린이집 5곳에 자녀를 보내고 있는 어머니 9명에 대한 반구조적 면담결과를 분석한 결과, 네 가지 주제가 부각되었다. 먼저, 어머니의 경험과 가족의 상황에 따라 ‘좋은’ 어린이집의 기준이 다를 수 있으며 또 변할 수 있다는 기준의 다양성과 역동성이 가장 크게 떠올랐다. 아울러 어울려 함께 의미를 만들어 가는 공동체적 삶과 보육, 사람에 대한 신뢰와 어린이집 개방을 통한 신뢰를 바탕으로 한 믿을 수 있는 보육, 그리고 비영리 추구와 사회 평등 및 통합으로 이어지는 보육의 공공성이 강조되었다. 이러한 결과는 보육의 주요 관계집단 중 하나인 학부모 집단 속에도 다양한 목소리가 있다는 사실을 주지하고, 그 목소리들을 존중하면서 보육철학과 보육과정 계획 및 운영, 보육실제에 대해 열린 마음으로 함께 의미를 만들어 가는 과정이 중요함을 시사하였다.

This study aims to illuminate child care teachers’ experience and values with regard to child care by seeking the meanings of quality child care centers from the teachers’ perspectives. A total of 10 teachers with more than 5 years’ experience in 5 different child care centers in Daegu participated in the study. Data were mainly collected through individual interviews and video-cued focus group interviews. The collected data were analyzed by QSR NVivo 7.0 program. The results indicated that the teachers placed a high priority on quality of teachers with professionalism and stronger qualifications in defining quality child care centers. Additional emphases were put on management of child care centers reflecting the needs of teachers including teacher benefits, a close relationship between teachers and parents by recognizing various communication methods and implementing an open-door policy, and faithful implementation of the official child-care curriculum with children’s interests in its center. This study suggests that it is important to realize that there are various voices within the teacher group, one of the major stakeholder groups in child care, and a true meaning-making process should be achieved in child care philosophy, planning and implementation of the curriculum and practices while respecting teachers’ perspectives. 본 연구는 보육교사가 바라보는 좋은 어린이집의 의미를 알아봄으로써 교사들의 보육에 대한 경험과 가치관을 조명하고자 하였다. 연구참여자는 대구지역 어린이집 5곳에서 근무하는 경력 5년 이상의 보육교사 10명이다. 자료는 심층적 개별면담과 비디오 매개 포커스 그룹면담을 중심으로 수집하였으며 QSR NVivo 7.0 프로그램을 활용하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 교사의 전문성과 교사 자격의 강화를 강조한 좋은 교사가 가장 부각되었다. 아울러 교사의 복지와 대우를 포함한 구성원의 요구를 반영한 운영, 다양한 소통 방법의 인정과 개방을 통한 교사-부모 관계 맺기, 그리고 유아를 중심에 두는 보육과정의 충실화가 강조되었다. 이러한 결과는 보육의 주요 관계집단 중 하나인 교사 집단 속에서도 다양한 목소리가 있다는 사실을 주지하고, 교사들의 관점을 존중하면서 보육철학과 보육과정 계획 및 운영, 보육실제에 대해 함께 의미 만들어가기의 중요함을 시사한다.

This study aims to define the meanings of quality child care centers from the perspectives of mothers. A total of 11 mother who enrolled their children in 5 different child care centers in Daegu participated in the study. Data were mainly collected through individual interviews and video-cued focus group interviews. The collected data were analyzed by QSR NVivo 7.0 program. The results indicated that the mothers placed a high priority on quality of teachers with good personality and professionalism through continuous re-training programs in defining quality child care centers. Additional emphases were put on building close relationship between mothers and teachers, parent participation and communication enabled by the trust established though an open-door policy, management of child care centers reflecting parents’ need regarding children’s health and safety, and the curriculum that can make children happy. This study suggests that it is important to realize that there are various voices with in the mother groups, one of the major stakeholder groups in child care, and a true meaning-making process should be achieved in creating a true quality child care centers while respecting the mothers’ perspectives. 본 연구는 어머니의 관점에서 바라보는 좋은 어린이집의 의미를 알아보는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구참여자는 대구지역 어린이집 5곳에 자녀를 보내고 있는 어머니 11명이다. 참여자들과 개별면담, 비디오 매개 포커스 그룹면담 등을 실시하여 자료를 수집하였다. 자료는 QSR NVivo7.0 프로그램을 활용하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 어머니의 관점에서 바라본 좋은 어린이집의 의미에서는 교사의 인성과 재교육을 강조한 좋은 교사가 부각 되었다. 또한 교사-어머니 간에 정으로 관계를 맺으며 개방을 통해 신뢰를 쌓는 부모참여와 소통, 유아의 건강과 안전 및 가정의 요구를 반영한 운영, 그리고 유아가 행복할 수 있는 보육과정이 강조되었다. 이러한 결과는 보육의 주요 관계 집단 중 하나인 어머니 집단 내에서도 다양한 목소리가 있다는 사실을 인지하고, 어머니들의 관점을 존중하면서 함께 의미 만들어가기(meaning-making)를 통해 좋은 어린이집을 만들어 나갈 수 있음을 시사 한다.
