Paranoid Adipsia-induced Severe Hypernatremia and Uremia treated with Hemodialysis

We describe a patient with severe hypernatremia and uremia caused by paranoid adipsia who was treated successfully with hydration and hemodialysis. A previously healthy 40-year-old woman developed the paranoid idea that her water was poisoned, so she refused to drink any water. On admission, her blood urea nitrogen was 208mg/dL, creatinine 4.90mg/dL, serum osmolality 452mOsm/L, serum sodium 172mEq/L, urine specific gravity ≥1.030, urine osmolality 698mOsm/L, and urine sodium/potassium/chloride 34/85.6/8mEq/L. We diagnosed her with uremic encephalopathy and started intravenous dextrose, but the sodium correction was incomplete. She underwent two sessions of hemodialysis to treat the uremic encephalopathy and hypernatremia, and recovered fully without neurological sequelae. Although the standard treatment for severe hypernatremia is hydration, hemodialysis can be an additional treatment in cases of combined uremic encephalopathy.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of colon, which is common in western countries but rare in Korea, As the colonoscopic examination becomes popular, early detection rate is increasing in oriental countries, but its precise clinical aspects are still obscure in Korea due to rarity. To observe clinical aspects of ulcerative colitis in Korea, we studied 39 cases, which were diagnosed by clinical findings, laboratory examinations barium enema and follaw up colonoscopic examination. We performed colonoscopic examination on every patient at least 3 times during over 6 months from 1981 to 1991. The results were as follows: 1) 30cases (76.9%) were distributed in 2nd.-4th. decade and male to feamle sex ratio was 1: 1.2. 2) Among clinical manifestations, colonic symytoms were diarrhea 94.8%, bloody stool 84.6% and abdominal pain 71.8%. Systemic symptoms were weight loss 25.6%, symptoms of anemia 10.3% and fever 2.6%. Severity of clinical manifestations was correlated with colonascopic grade. Extra-colonic manifestations were severe neurosis 10.3%, keratitis 2.6%, and renal stone 2.6%. 3) We found no relationship between duration and extent of disease. 4) In clinical laboratory, anemla, increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and hypoalbuminemia were correlated with colonoscopic grade. 5) In detection of ulcerative proctosigmoiditis, barium enema showed a limited capacity, but colonoscopic examination was valuable. 6) All of 39 cases were responded to medical therapy with oral sulfasalazine and/or oral prednisolone in 3 months but relapsed in 94.8% within 2 years without extention of lesion or malignant change.

방향 탐지용 대공 근접 신관센서의 BPSK 송수신기 설계에 관한 연구

This paper describes the fundamentals, design, realization and test results of a BPSK(Bi Phase Shift Keying) transceiver for the direction finding proximity fuze sensor for anti-aircrafts or air missiles. The BPSK transceiver for the direction finding fuze sensor has been designed to detect a moving target by Doppler signal processing with the code correlation method and to distinguish direction by comparing received powers of each Doppler signal from adjacent three receiving antennas. The electrical and ESS(Environmental Stress Screening) tests of the BPSK transceiver showed satisfactory results and target detection and direction finding performances proved to be successful through dynamic operation tests by 155 mm gun firing.

Thein Hpei Myint was the writer who had played a pivotal role in the Myanmar modern literature world. He had written both long novels and short novels. And Thein Hpei Myint was a representative resistance writer of anti-fascism people’s literature of Myanmar. He was a political novelist as well as a politician. He wrote four works which can be called anti-fascism literature. They are 『What happened in Burma』 a review published in 1943, 『Over the ashes』 a drama in 1945, 『The wartime traveller』 accounts in 1950-1955, 『As sure as the sun rising in the east』 a long novel in 1953-1957. His thoughts and actions about anti-fascism are identified through these four works. In particular, 『As sure as the sun rising in the east』, the representative work of Thein Hpei Myint, which was based on his idea and activity about anti-fascism, described anti-fascism as a personal experience through the inner description of an ordinary youth. The literary style of Thein Hpei Myintin in the aspect of contents is the anti-fascism resistance literature. This is his greatest literary character.

Statistical Analysis of Construction Productivity for Highway Pavement Operations

Highway pavement operations were generally known as a collection of repetitive and equipment-intensive activities with lower variability in its daily productivity. However, previous research showed that the pavement operation was still vulnerable to the external factors that influenced productivity. The purpose of this study was to statistically analyze the factors that affected pavement operation in order to verify the cause-and-effect of those factors. The researchers selected four highway construction projects to collect productivity data from and evaluated the effect of various interference factors on productivity. Correlation analyses were performed to verify the effect of inclement weather conditions and prerequisite work on the pavement crews’ performance. It was verified that any type of interference lowered productivity and the effects became severe if multiple interference factors occurred on a single workday. Industry practitioners needed to make an informed decision to avoid interference by recognizing the causes and effects of the interference factors and to reduce risks associated with the factors that negatively affected productivity.

Global Grain Price Transmission to Korean Agricultural and Food Prices

This study examines the price transmission of global grain prices on Korean agricultural and food markets. Furthermore, it tests the structural break points of global grain prices and analyzes whether their impact changes before and after the global financial crisis and agflation. The results are as follows. First, the structural break of global grain prices was found in May 2007. Second, causal relationships between global grain prices and domestic agricultural and food prices were also changed after the global financial crisis and agflation. Third, a significant price transmission from global soybeans price to domestic soybean price was observed only after 2007. Meanwhile, domestic wheat prices show significant price transmissions following the changes in global wheat prices in both periods. Fourth, the price transmission of global grain prices on domestic processed food prices was significant both before and after 2007. Lastly, an asymmetric price transmission between global and domestic prices was found only before 2007.
