This study was conducted to characterize the microbial growths on media in aerobic and anaerobic fixed-film processes upon the variation of organic loading rates. It appears that the growth on media became more likely to be suspended rather than attached as organic loading rate reached around 3 ㎏ COD/㎥/d. At an organic loading rate less than around l㎏ COD/㎥ /d the microbial attachment became stronger in aerobic than in anaerobic condition. As the organic loading rate increased, the effluent quality became poorer. However, at the same loading rate, the effluent concentration varied little, even influent concentration greatly increased. The maximum F/Mv (㎏ COD)/㎏ MLVS/d)ratio measured from anaerobic condition was about 1 which is lower than that of activated sludge process. The computed minimum SRTs were respectively 7.6 days for anaerobic and l.ldays for aerobic condition.

This study was made to compare organic removal efficiencies at different anaerobic reactors operated at low (ambient) temperatures; suspended growth, sludge blanket, and fixed-film reactors. Study results indicate there would be little difference in removal efficiencies at different reators if settling efficientices were excluded.

Septage characteristics were evaluated in this study. Samples taken from 50 septage collection trucks serving to Seoul metropolitan area indicated that raw septage has 37,760mg/1 of COD, 8,050mg/l of BOD, 21,890mg/1 of SS. Approximately 33 percent of COD, 27 percent of BOD, 18 percent of SS removal could be achieved by screening raw septage with a 40-mesh (0.42mm Opening). When septage added to municipal wastewater at a rate of 1 to 3% to the total volume and settled, BOD and SS removal efficiences respectively increased from 23 and 47 percent to 54 and 63 percent.
