The goal of this study is to investigate the course development for the Korean students in the immersion English program. This study describes the detailed curriculum and makes some suggestions to improve the courses for regular, extracurricular, and special activities in the five-week immersion English program managed by KAIST in summer 2001. This immersion English program was designed to develop the students' communicative competence in speaking English with native speakers in the age of globalization, by providing students with the English-speaking immersion setting. The results of the students' tests and the data concerning the program revealed that the program was very significant in improving students' communicative competence focused on communication and presentation and in attaining the high motivation for the natural English communication by performing the student-centered and task-based extracurricular activities and special events.

This paper is to investigate the evolution of syntax from the biolinguistic perspectives. Biolinguistics examines the internalized biological result of language faculty, including its mechanism (structure and function), development and evolution. In biolinguistic minimalism the basic concepts such as recursive Merge, precursors to Merge are examined for the evolution of syntax. Concerning the precursors to Merge, Chomsky’s view is supported that we may not suppose there were the precursors to the unbounded Merge for both evolution and development. Then the saltational view that syntax was the result of a single evolutionary development within the Minimalist Program is compared with the incremental view that the evolution of syntax involved multiple stages between the communication system and modern syntax. It is argued that the parallel architecture may be compatible with a saltational theory of syntactic evolution. Hence, it is concluded that the emergence of syntax with the single evolutional development in the saltational view can explain most of syntactic mechanisms focusing on the recursive combinatorial operation Merge. This paper is to examine the recursive properties of human language from the biolinguistic perspectives. Biolinguistics attempt to examine the biologically endowed and unique property for human language that enters into the generation and acquisition of language. Hauser et al (2002) suggest that the recursion is the core and unique feature of the language faculty in the narrow sense. Biolinguistic minimalism attempts to reduce the internal mechanism of recursion to the operation Merge. Recursion yielding the discrete infinity is the internal linguistic system of humans, a part of the human biological components. Hence it is concluded that the recursive computational operation is the unbound Merge for the structure building, although neural/psychological studies as well as the language experiences may present some other views.

With the rapid development in computer hardware and software in recent years, the contents and methods of teaching English have been altered greatly. The use of multimedia and the Internet as a means of language teaching is increasing as information technology accelerates. Using multimedia and the Internet in language teaching allows teachers to have more time to devote to interacting with their students. Above all, it arouses in students the motivation for learning and enables each student to study with the speed commensurate to his/her own ability. Both teachers and students can choose their own style that is most efficient for their classes. When students are efficiently stimulated through visual and auditory materials, they can be more easily motivated to utilize and develop creative techniques by using multimedia and the Internet. Thus, in the information age, it would be desirable to innovate the existing concepts of lineal education and allow more student-centered lessons to more readily expose students to contents and experiences according to their own demands.

This paper is to investigate human mind and the creative aspect of language use from the internalistic and biolinguistic perspectives. Biolinguistics examines the language faculty regarded as the internalized biological result of human mind. Accordingly, the study of human language deals with questions of language faculty, linguistic creativity, and generative creativity, and pursues the mechanisms that make language use possible. The creative aspect of language use is investigated as the central fact to any significant linguistic theory with some properties such as unboundedness, stimulus freedom, and coherence and appropriateness to circumstance. It is suggested that Chomskyan internalism deals with language faculty underlying the creative aspect of language use and provides the explanatory and fruitful scientific theory. As the standard arguments that syntax is innate, the creative aspect of language use is also innate to a large extent in humans. To conclude, the creative aspect of language use is an important aspect of the language faculty, and language users can acquire the ability to use their language creatively in language acquisition.(KAIST)

The purpose of this study is to justify the effects of role play with respect to speaking and listening functions and to provide the strategic methodology for improving English communicative competence of fifth grade primary school students. We can expand role play as a strategic teaching method to develop English learning models, so that English can be more easily acquired to the students who are in the critical language acquisition period. Strategic role play reflects the events and experiences of many kinds of people in everyday life. It is suggested that one of the best methods to improve English communicative competence in the primary classroom is through role play. Students can develop meaning for language patterns by portraying situations in which these instances in language would be used. This study proposes to facilitate English communicative ability using various student-centered role play strategies. It is concluded that the student-centered activities using strategic role play help the students to improve their English communicative competence. This is done by deriving their own creative dialogues and presenting the role play with their interests in learning English and with subsequently positive learning effects.

The purpose of this study is to investigate American traditional values and American culture in English education. The understanding of American culture in English education requires the analysis of world changes in the global age. The history of American English, the formation of American society, and the background of natural environment are described in relation to the traditional American values of the earliest settlers, such as multi-culture, individual freedom, frontier heritage in the West, equality of opportunity and wealth and material abundance. Hence the case studies of students’ project presentations on the American culture in English education exemplify the reflection of American traditional values in the current American life and society. It is concluded that project-based method with regard to cultural studies in English education reveals very positive learning effects by driving students" interests and active participation through the student-centered, creative, and cooperative project presentations.

This paper is to investigate the evolution of human language from the biolinguistic perspectives. Biolinguistics examines the language faculty regarded as the internalized biological result of distinctive evolution within human brains. Accordingly, the study of evolution of human language deals with questions of design, development and evolution of language in the Minimalist Program. Language faculty in the narrow sense is an optimal solution to the minimal design specifications of the interfacing systems in the Strong Minimalist Thesis. Hence, the recursive, unbounded application of Merge is the most fundamental computational operation of the language faculty. The externalization is regarded as an ancillary process relating to two systems: conceptual-intentional system and sensorimotor system. To conclude, the study of language is concerned with the Nature, human language, and the language faculty results from an interaction of three factors: genetic factors, experience, and general principles in biolinguistics. Therefore, the origin and evolution of Merge remains at the center of the evolution of human language. (KAIST)
