A combustion flame visualization system, for use as an engine diagnostics tool, was developed in order to understand the combustion reaction mechanism in the development stage of mass-produced S.I. engine. The measurement system consists of a still camera, a high speed camera and a computer-aided image processing system. The high speed camera system is capable of high speed photography up to 5000 fps.<br/> By using this system, flame structure estimated from the greylevel on acquired image and direction of flame propagation(shape of flame) in a single cylinder gasoline engine has been measured through the still camera and the high speed camera to understand combustion phemonena.<br/> There is a correlation between the air flow motion(swirl) and flame during combustion cycle. resulting in faster flame development to face exhaust valve.<br/>

A combustion flame visualization system, for use as an engine diagnostics tool, was developed in order to evaluate combustion chamber shapes in the development stage of mass-produced S.I. engine. The system consist of an image converter camera and a computer-aided image processing system.<br/> By using this system, flame structure estimated from the brightness level on a image and direction of flame propagation in a single cylinder gasoline engine were measured. The flame propagation in a single cylinder gasoline engine has been measured through a I-CCD camera to understand combustion phenomena.<br/> The results showed that the. flame in the initial stage seemed to be blue flame, luminous flame in the end stage. Most of images, the flame propagation was occurred rapidly in the direction of exhaust port, while it was observed smooth flame propagation in the direction of intake port.<br/>

Lean combustion in a spark ignition engine is one of the best solution for improvement of fuel economy and reduction of emission level. In order to access a lean combustion engine, ensure stable combustion at lean A/F ratio. The flow characteristics of 2-valve and 4-valve cylinder heads with various SCV were investigated in a steady flow rig. In each case, flow coefficient, swirl intensity and tumble intensity were measured. In addition, flow angle and turbulence intensity were also acquired to qualify these characteristics districtly. As expected, flow coefficient was reduced whereas intensity of swirl and tumble were increased in comparison with conventional valve. We experiments under some conditions to obtain the optimized shape of SCV in both cylinder heads.<br/>

Lean combustion in a SI engine has been achieved by optimizing the injection interval injection timing and fuel spray angle. The effect of fuel injection timing and injection interval on lean misfire limit has been investigated in a MPI SI engine. To investigate influence of injection characteristics. we measured lean misfire limit. torque. and fuel consumption. As a result. injection timing and injection interval governs lean misfire limit and brake specific fuel consumption.
