Vol.25 No.2
Trilobites are among the most abundant fossil groups in the lower Paleozoic Joseon Supergroup of the Taebaeksan Basin, Korea. The Joseon Supergroup was differentiated into five groups based on unique lithologic successions: i.e., Taebaek, Yeongwol, Yongtan, Pyeongchang, and Mungyeong groups. The Taebaek and Yeongwol groups yield diverse and abundant trilobite fossils, which provide a basis for establishing independent biozones within each group. Of the three Cambrian paleobiogeographic provinces in East Asia, the trilobite faunas of the Taebaek Group belong to the Hwangho faunal province composed dominantly of many endemic taxa representing shallow marine environments, whereas those of the Yeongwol Group to the Jiangnan faunal province characterized by cosmopolitan and pelagic forms indicating deep oceanic environments. This faunal contrast between the Hwangho and Jiangnan faunal provinces led to suggest that during much of the Paleozoic the east Asian continent was divided into the Sino-Korea and Yangtze cratons. During the Paleozoic times, the Korean peninsula was also subdivided into the Nangrim, Gyeonggi, and Yeongnam massifs: the Nangrim and Yeongnam massifs were part of the Sino-Korea craton, while the Gyeonggi massif belonged to the Yangtze craton. In the early Triassic, the Sino-Korea and Yangtze cratons began to collide to form much of the present east Asian continent, leaving the collisional scars within the Korean peninsula: namely, the Imjingang belt between the Nangrim and Gyeonggi massifs and the Okcheon belt between the Gyeonggi and Yeongnam massifs. This study proposes that the Okcheon belt should be differentiated into the Taebaeksan Basin and Chungju Basin. The Taebaeksan Basin was interpreted to represent an epicontinental sea, fringing the Sino-Korea craton, whereas the Chungju Basin occupied the marginal part of the Yangtze craton. This paper describes the early Paleozoic depositional history of the Taeabeksan Basin based on the lithologic and trilobite faunal successions and also presents a paleogeographic model for the Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Sino-Korea craton.
Vol.27 No.1
The Korean Peninsula is subdivided into nine tectonic provinces: from north to south, Hambuk Fold Belt, Nangnim Massif, Pyeongnam Basin, Imjingang Belt, Gyeonggi Massif, Chungju Basin, Taebaeksan Basin, Yeongnam Massif, and Gyeongsang Basin. The Nangnim Massif, Pyeongnam Basin, Taebaeksan Basin, Yeongnam Massif, and Gyeongsang Basin belonged to the Sino-Korean Craton, while the Imjingang Belt, Geonggi Massif, and Chungju Basin were part of the South China Craton. Paleobiogeographical analyses of the trilobite faunal assemblages of the Taebaeksan Basin have demonstrated that the Sino-Korean Craton occupied the marginal part of the Gondwanaland and the Taebaeksan Basin was a part of an epeiric sea which was located between the Sino-Korean Craton and the Australian continent. A recent study on a trilobite fauna and detrital zircon age spectra from the Cambrian of Bhutan strongly suggests a paleogeographic link between eastern part of the Himalaya and the Sino-Korean Craton. The result implies that during the early Paleozoic the Sino-Korean Craton was located close even to the Indian continent and South China Craton to the extent that the trilobites migrated along the epeiric sea.
