문화계몽운동의 영향 아래에 있었던 연극개량에 대한 논의들은 문화와 정치와의 관계를 보여주는 사례라고 생각한다. 한말의 연극개량운동은 조선이 앞으로 나아가야 할 방향에 대해 민족주의 계열과 통감부에서 견지하고 있는 저마다의 노선을 가장 뚜렷하게 보여주는 사례이다. 모든 사람들에게 교육의 기회가 주어지기 힘든 현실에서 연극을 통한 계몽은 매우 긴요한 수단으로 인식될 수 있었다. 이제 대중을 계몽시키기 위해서는 적절한 컨텐츠 즉 국민의식을 발휘시킬 수 있는 충국열사, 애국지사들을 소재로 한 각본이 필요했다. 통감부는 비단 극장뿐만이 아니라 대중들을 상대로 하는 문화전반을 장악하고 있었다. 연극개량회를 통한 극장의 정치적 통제를 이미 경험했던 일제는 조선의 극장 운영에 대해 전반적인 통제를 하였고 이인직의 ‘은세계’ 공연은 통감부의 문화에 대한 인식이 반영된 것이었다. 그의 신연극 은세계는 조선의 지배질서를 비판하는 내용이었다. 신소설 은세계는 여기에 더하여 일본의 시정개선을 찬양하는 내용이 더하였다. 그러나 통감부의 의도아래 기획되었던 탓에 이인직은 더 이상의 공연작품은 남기질 않았다. This article examines the various discussions on the drama reform, which were under the influence of the Cultural Enlightenment Movement, as a good example of the nexus between culture and politics in the late Korean Empire. The Theatre Reform Movement reveals two very different visions that each of the Korean Nationalists and Japanese Residency-General of Korea had on Korea’s future. Under the circumstance of educational inequality, the Nationalists viewed drama as an efficacious means of enlightenment. They needed proper cultural contents for the enlightenment of the masses, such as the dramas based on the stories of loyalists and patriots, which could arouse the national sentiments of Korean people. However, the Residency-General maintained tight control over the overall domains of popular culture as well as theatres. Japanese colonial authorities, which had already have an experience of political control over Japanese theatres through the Theatre Reform Society (Engeki kairyo kai), attempted to regulate overall management of Korean theatres. The staging of Yi In-jik’s A Silver World (Eunsegye 은세계) reflected Residency-General headquarter’s concern on contemporary culture. This “New Drama” (Sinyeongeuk) was a criticism over the dominant social order in Joseon, and the admiration of the development of Korea under the Japanese rule was added to Yi In-jik’s “New Novel” (Sinsoseol) A Silver World. However, this was Yi In-jik’s last work staged in a theatre as the performance was planned by colonial authorities.
