Purpose: To investigate the effects of electromyography (EMG) biofeedback on the muscle activity of the trapezius, shoulder pain, function, and range of motion (ROM) in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome (SAIS). Methods: Sixteen patients (9 males and 7 females) with SAIS participated voluntarily. The main outcome measures were muscle activity of the trapezius, shoulder pain (VAS), ROM, and the shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI). Exercises with EMG biofeedback consisted of shoulder flexion in a standing position, shoulder external rotation in a side-lying position, and shoulder horizontal abduction in a prone position. Post measurements were taken immediately after EMG biofeedback training. Results: Middle and lower trapezius activity, as well as ROM, was significantly increased by exercise with EMG biofeedback (p<0.05). In addition, VAS and SPADI scores significantly decreased post-EMG biofeedback training (p<0.05). Conclusion: EMG biofeedback intervention is an effective exercise for SAIS patients to restore activity of the middle and lower trapezius and to improve pain, shoulder function, and ROM.

The closed-loop state and input observer is a pole-placement type observer and estimates unknown state and input variables simultaneously. Pole-placement type observers may have poor transient performance with respect to ill-conditioning factors such as unknown initial estimates, round-off error, etc. For the robust transient performance, the effects of these ill-conditioning factors must be minimized in designing observers. In this paper, the transient performance of the closed-loop state and input observer is investigated quantitatively by considering the error bounds due to ill-conditioning factors. The performance indices are selected from these error bounds and are related to the observer robustness with respect to the ill -conditioning factors. The closed-loop state and input observer with small performance indices is considered as a well-conditioned observer from the transient perspective.

In this paper, the well-conditioned observer is designed to be insensitive to the ill-conditioning factors in transient and steady-state observer performance. A condition number based on 12-norm of the eigenvector matrix of the observer matrix has been proposed on a principal index in the observer performance. For the well-conditioned observer design, the non-normality measure and the observability condition of the observer matrix are utilized. The two constraints are specified into observer gain boundary region that guarantees a small condition number and a stable observer. The observer gain selected in this region guarantees a well-conditioned and observable property. In this study, this method is applied to the Luenberger observer and Kalman filters for small order systems. In designing Kalman filters, the ratio of the process noise covariance to the measurement noise covariance is a design parameter and its effect on the condition number is investigated.

Purpose Purpose of this study was to determine correlation between Walter Reed Visual Analogue Scale (WRVAS) and Scoliosis Research Society-22(SRS-22) questionnaire for idiopathic scoliosis. Methods For this study, to assess reliability, 224 middle school female students were applied the WRVAS & SRS-22 questionnaire. Pearson correlation analysis was used to know correlationship between WRVAS and SRS-22 questionnaire. Regression analysis was used to know causation between WRVAS and SRS-22 questionnaire. Results Positive correlation(.248) was found between WRVAS score and SRS-22 score. And SRS-22 was shown positive correlation compared with WRVAS as a result slope of .078 Conclusion The WRVAS questionnaire is reliable positive correlation with SRS-22 questionnaire. It is valid and may be useful for clinical evaluation of idiopathic scoliosis patients.

On-line and real-time information of the road/tire interaction is the essential factor not only from the vehicle monitoring viewpoint but also for the Advanced Vehicle Control Systems(AVCS) approach. In particular, their interactions are known to be closely related to the tractive ability, handling stability, steerability and braking characteristics of ground vehicles. The key variables representing the interactions can be tire-road friction coefficient and the longitudinal/lateral forces acting on the tires. However, it is not feasible in the operating vehicles to measure those variables directly because of high cost of sensors, limitations in sensor technology, interference with the tire rotation and harsh environment. The alternative is indirect sensing techniques which can estimate the key variables such as tire forces based on vehicle dynamics models. In this paper, in order to estimate the tire forces, three monitoring systems are developed based on the Recursive Least Square, Extended Kalman Filter and Adaptive Observer, respectively. A 14 DOF vehicle model with a combined-slip Magic Formula tire model is utilized in order to generate true vehicle motion. The lateral forces acting on the tires are estimated using those monitoring systems and their estimation accuracy is compared with the real values.<br/>

Follicle-stimulating hormone-secreting pituitary adenomas are rarley diagnosed and likely considered as a non-functioning pituitary tumor. Because they usually do not present until of sufficient size to cause neurologic deficits by mass effect or hypopituitarism, whereas other functioning tumors - acromegaly, prolactinoma, Cushing s disease - frequently present earlier with symptoms caused by physiologic effects of excess hormones that they secrete. 62-year-old man suffered from visual disturbance. Endocrinologic evaluation showed high serum FSH level. Suprasellar extended pituitary mass with compression to optic chiasm & cavernous sinus was imaged on MRI and removed by endoscope assisted endonasal transsphenoidal surgery. It was composed of gonadotroph showed strong immunohistochemical reactivity against FSH and LH. Uncommon pituitary tumors such as FSH-secreting adenomas can be defined early and accurately through correlation between their clinical, endocrionological, radiographic and immunohistochemical characteristics.

Objective:Chordomas, whether involving the clivus or simply situated anterior to the brainstem, present a technical challenge for adequate exposure and safe resection. Transsphenoidal approach is safer and easier than any other approaches, but it has some limitation of resectability in laterally extended tumor. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the advantages of endoscope assisted transsphenoidal approach to remove paraclival lesion on the midline. Methods:Nine patients with clival chordomas underwent surgery in our institution from 2002 to 2009. There were two men and seven women who ranged in age between 4 and 59 years. Four patients underwent stage operation by both transsphenoidal surgery and transpetrosal or transcavernous surgery. Three patients underwent only transsphenoidal surgery and two underwent only transpetrosal surgery. For image guidance, both endoscope and neuronavigation system were used in all surgical procedures. Results:Gross total removal was achieved in 33.3% and subtotal removal was achieved in 55.5%. The mean follow-up period was 44.2 months. The mortality rate during the follow-up period was 11.1%. Conclusion:For accessing clival chordoma via an anterior route, visualization of the tumor with the endoscope and navigation system is readily achievable and have the advantages of confirmation the anatomy that cannot be seen in the conventional transsphenoidal approach. This study shows transsphenoidal approach become safer and easier if the tumor is located on upper two thirds of the clivus and located on the midline.
