This study examines the historical process of pointe work combined with femininity and analyzes the changing discourse surrounding male pointe work. Since the Romantic ballet, female dancers have been wearing point shoes and male dancers support them. in which ballet has distinguished and strengthened gender roles for men and women. In a situation where Pointe work became a symbol of femininity, male pointe work was used exclusively for the purpose of comic representation of gender-boundary characters en travesti. However, since the 1990s, people began to use pointe work in a more serious and reflective way as educational tools, for exploring gender/sexuality beyond the binary gender, and for expanding technical possibilities and artistic expression. The fact that pointe work, which has strengthened the gender dichotomy of ballet, is changing makes us expect that the gender/sexuality issue surrounding ballet is rapidly expanding and that pointe work will be an interesting venue for artistic and social experiments.

This study first investigates the process of having been established Korean school art education and its ideologies since modernization, and next examines the current issues around the institution of the National Curriculum for Art within the Korean sociocultural context. These investigation and examination aim to understand how the sociocultural issues of Korean school art education have been produced in the institution of Korean National Curriculum. Now the newly revised Korean National Curriculum is the ninth revision according to the change of Korean regime. As a reflection of Korean art education, the investigation of the ideologies embedded in the previous curricula for art provides the useful information of analysing the characteristics of the system of developing the National Curriculum. Considering the Korean institution of entrance examination, we can discuss with four institutional issues of the context of developing Korean National Curriculum for Art: (1) unstable lesson timetable and numbers of teachers for art as a marginalized subject; (2) the crippled operations of the curriculum for pre-service art teachers and the selective system of art teachers; (3) unconnected theoretical researches with practices of school art education; and (4) the alienated rationales and purposes of art education by the political debates between subjects. These issues can also be discussed as the causes of the sociocultural phenomenon happening around the institution of the National Curriculum for Art. This discussion demonstrates that the sociocultural phenomenon around the newley developed National Curriculum for Art results from the institutional practice in the political, economic and cultural context of Korean school education since modernization.

It is estimated that 26 ballet staffing firms for pre-schoolers have popped up between 1997-2004 in Korea and sent their lecturers to various culture centers, leading to the boom of ballet as a liberal education. Intrigued by the popularity of its subgenre “English ballet”, this study analyzes the pedagogical rationale and methodology of pre-school English ballet programs in Korea. he research subject is “Julie’s English Ballet”, one of the most popular English ballet franchise staffing firms in Korea. Julie’s English ballet provides standardized classes all over country that are structured with supplementary textbooks, CDs, props, and teacher’s guide. The company advertises that through English ballet program, students can “learn English phonology and ballet movements during the critical period,” which reveals its pedagogical rationales. First, by mentioning “critical period,” it advocates the Critical Period Theory, suggested by Wilder Panfield, that the younger, the better one acquires a language. Second, the company suggests phonology as its methodological rationale, while the study argues that total Physical Response theory better fits the characteristics of English ballet program that emphasizes repeatability of both ballet and English-learning. Third, by combining English and ballet, English ballet is geared toward English Immersion Education, or Content-Based Learning in English. Conducting an ethnographic research on Julie’s English ballet, the research analyzed its curricular structure, characteristics, and pedagogical methodologies. According to the Content-Based Instruction model by Myriam Met (1999), Julie’s English Ballet seems content-driven rather than language-driven, in that dance-majored instructors teach it as a part of ballet programs. However, as English ballet’s curricular contents is divided into ballet and creative movement, the curricular imbalance between them results in the weakening of its pedagogical goals. Ballet is curtailed and marginalized while creative movement is emphasized. As lots of time and energy are spent on topic-based activities of creative movement, the whole class is transformed to be “English through Ballet (language-driven)” rather than “English for Ballet (content-driven).” eaching English AND ballet at the same time inevitably accompanies sacrifice of the educational effect. English ballet offers a learning context that is meaningful and interactive enough to help students learn English more easily and naturally. However, it has a danger to provide insufficient ballet experience to be considered as a meaningful ballet class, which is marginalized by English and creative movement. In that sense, while praising its achievement and potential to invigorate job market for dancers and cultivate ballet audiences, the dance field should also beware of the possibility that ballet in English ballet only remains as the sugarcoat of the pressure for English in the Korean society.

Since its establishment, arts high schools in South Korea have been widely regarded as arts-specialized educational institutions that help prepare students to enter universities that foster future artists by taking into account government education policies and society’s perception of art. Despite the need for education that reflect the characteristics of modern digitalization and the information technology era such as artificial intelligence, the perception of art education is still confused with fostering few privileged artists that leads to lack of differentiated operational directions and improvement measures. Thus, this study reviews policy changes and the current curriculum since the initial establishment of arts high schools to prospect the meaning and role of art specialized education in the future society. By analysing outstanding overseas cases based on policy changes and operational status of arts high schools this study was able to find the following focal points. First, expanding fine art majors to mainstream art by integrating currently operating departments with jobs and career paths. Second, examining educational goals for integrated art education curriculum that is required for fostering convergent art talents. Third, utilizing the special status of arts high schools as special purpose high schools in differentiating operation methods. Finally, establishing connection with the local community and the necessary environment for the future art field. The results of this study can be utilized in the search for developing arts high schools in the changed future environment.

Today, art is expanding in terms of economic efficiency with the development of artificial intelligence(AI) technology and opening up opportunities for creation to the general public, just as it has very effi ciently replaced human labor and time. Amid growing interest in copyright and execution subjects in images generated by AI behind the economic benefi ts of the breakthrough development of artificial intelligence technology, this study examines the difference between the aesthetic experience when the researcher drew an actual picture himself and when creating images through AI programs. With the development of ChatGPT utilizing AI, data information processing technology between language and images opens the horizon for new art creation. The implications of this study can be presented in three dimensions in terms of diff erentiated directions from existing art education. First, in relation to developing creativity through thought that can be made up of accumulation of knowledge and long experiential learning, image creation by AI lacks a process of humanistic thinking and needs to be reinforced in terms of learning. Second, the subject of education related to the creation of professional AI images and the setting of educational content and direction according to the subject are required through discussions on whether art AI utilization technology should be taught in engineering fi elds or in art fi elds as a matter of subjectivity and execution power. Finally, in art education, AI should drive a reconsideration of what kind of teaching methods are eff ective and what concepts are required for AI learning in cognitive science and pedagogical theories and methods. In conclusion;with the development of ChatGPT;artificial intelligence opens up the horizon for new art creation through data information processing between language and images;and the purpose and meaning of traditional art education need to accommodate this change and transform in the practice of liberal arts education at a time when the development of these technologies is required. The implications of this study show that by identifying the unique attributes of art regardless of the major area;understanding the functions of valuable works;and providing aesthetic experiences;a new horizon must be devised for liberal arts education that enables humanities;sociological;and engineering combinations as well as simple artificial intelligence technologies.

In 2009 Merce Cunningham and Pina Bausch passed away, rekindling the debate on dance legacy and preservation. While some relate the difficulty of dance preservation to the dualism of ballet vs. modern dance, this study suggests that it is more related to the issue of performance and performativity found in their works as well as in the discourse of dance preservation. Reviewing the development and characteristics of performance and performativity in art and academe, I analyze the choices of the two companies’ foundations in regards to preserving their respective choreographers’ legacies as follows: materialization, continuation of performance, and recognition of dancers’ and audiences’ embodied knowledge.
