The concept of external post-tensioning has been used as an effective technology to strengthen composite steel-concrete girders in bridges. External post-tensioning method, which is practical and economical, has been applied in concrete bridges. The effect of composite bridges strengthened with external post-tensioning has being studying, but it has been applied to a few existing bridges. Therefore, a specific presentation needs for efficient strengthening method related to determination of resonable initial tendon force and a number of tendons. This study shows the process of determination of initial tendon force and a number of tendons using proposed rating factor equation for efficient tendon configuration to improve of load-carrying capacity in a two-span continuous composite girder. This method has been shown as an effective one for an existing two-span continuous composite girder.

A method to determine the initial tendon force is proposed to improve load carrying capacity in existing steel-concrete composite bridges strengthened with external tendons. This method is applied to both pre-tensioned and post-tensioned composite beams strengthened with external tendon prior to and after concrete placement. A procedure to determine the number of tendon and initial tendon force is described with the proposed rating factor, which considers the increment of tendon force due to live loads. The method is applied to the improvement of rating factor in a composite bridge strengthened with external tendons.

Strengthening method of steel-concrete composite bridges using external tendons has been found to one of the most effective techniques of reinforcement and its application is increasing. In this paper, experimental test was carried out to prove the effects of increasing in yield loading and ultimate loading of steel-concrete composite beam strengthened by external tendons. Quantitative analysis is carried out to evaluate the effects of variables such as existence or nonexistence of tendon force, existence or nonexistence of deviator, tendon eccentricity and the shape of strands under the working load.
