The purpose of this study is to investigate the meaning and roles of rhymes in oriental mathematics. To do this, we consider the rhymes in traditional chinese, korean, indian, arabian mathematical books and the mathematical knowledge which they implicate. And we discuss the reasons for which they were often used and the roles which they played. In addition, we suggest how to use them in teaching mathematics.

This study investigates a mathematical subject, 'triangles' in mathematics books of Chosun Dynasty, in special Muk Sa Jib San Bub(默思集算法), Gu Il Jib(九一集), San Hak Ib Mun(算學入門), Ju Hae Su Yong(籌解需用), and San Sul Gwan Gyun(算術管見). It is likely that they apt to avoid manipulating general triangles except the right triangles and the isosceles triangles etc. Our investigation says that the progress of triangle-related contents in Chosun mathematics can fall into three stages: measurement of the triangle-shaped fields, transition from the object of measurement to the object of geometrical study, and examination of definition, properties and validation influenced by western mathematics.

This study aims to investigate the evolution of calculating the volume of a sphere in eastern and western mathematical history. In western case, Archimedes', Cavalieri's and Kepler's approaches, and in eastern case, Nine Chapters';, Liu Hui's and Zus' approaches are worthy of noting. The common idea of most of these approaches is the infinitesimal concept corresponding to Cavalieri's or Liu-Zu's principle which would developed to the basic idea of Calculus. So this study proposes an alternative to organization of math-textbooks or instructional procedures for teaching the volume of a sphere based on the principle.

This study investigates how high achievers solve a given mathematical problem. The problem, which comes from 'SanHakIbMun', a Korean mathematics book from eighteenth century, is not used in regular courses of study. It requires students to determine the area of a gnomon given four dimensions(4,14,4,22). The subjects are 84 sixth grade elementary school students who, at the recommendation of his/her school principal, participated in the mathematics competition held by J university. The methods used by these students can be classified into two approaches: numerical and decomposing-reconstructing, which are subdivided into three and six methods respectively. Of special note are a method which assumes algebraic feature, and some methods which appear in the history of eastern mathematics. Based on the result, we may observe a great variance in methods used, despite the fact that nearly half of the subject group used the numerical approach.

Approximation is a very useful approach in mathematics research. It was the same in traditional Chinese and Chosun mathematics. This study derived five characteristics from approximation approaches which were found in Chinese and Chosun mathematical books: improvement of approximate values, common and inevitable use of approximate values, recognition of approximate values and their reasons, comparison of their exactness, application of approximate principles. Through these characteristics, we can infer what Chinese and Chosun mathematicians recognized approximate values and how they manipulated them. They took approximate approaches by necessity or for the sake of convenience in mathematical study and its applications. Also, they tried to improve the degree of exactness of approximate values and use the inverse calculations to check them.

The purposes of this study were to investigate the gap in perceived importance-performance between dietitians and foodservice workers regarding school foodservice sanitation and to analyze items that should be given priority for improvement. Data were collected by 440 foodservice workers and 71 dietitians in Gyeongbuk province. All statistical analyses were conducted using the SAS package program (version 8.2 for Windows) for descriptive analysis, t-test, and importance-performance analysis (IPA). According to the performance analysis, there were significant differences between dietitians and foodservice workers in 18 out of the 20 items. In all of 18 items, the evaluated performance scores according to the foodservice workers were higher than those of the dietitians. In addition, the results of IPA confirmed the following areas as improvement priorities: proper hand washing of foodservice workers, cleanliness of trays and utensils, monitoring of temperature of refrigerated/frozen foods and quality of the food materials during inspection, proper washing and disinfection of raw vegetables and fruits and maintenance of CCP records, and control of food holding temperature and methods. In conclusion, dietitians should perform education about sanitation management items that have low perceived importance and should make a plan to improve sanitation management after understanding the gap in perceived importance-performance between dietitians and food service workers.
