The input torque ripple induced by combustion engines is a significant source of NVH(noise, vibration and harshness) problem in automotive transmissions. Because this torque fluctuation is primarily transmitted to the input shaft of automotive powertrains(e.g., automatic transmissions) when the lock-up clutches are closed, a torsional damper with helical springs is generally inserted between engine and transmissions to isolate the input vibratory energy, which is essential for the passenger comfort. The torsional vibration isolator exhibits frequency ranges in which there is low vibration transmissibility. However, the isolation performance is currently evaluated through the static torsional spring characteristics. In this study, the transmissibility of torsional spring dampers, essential dynamic performance index for vibration isolator, is first experimentally evaluated.

The finite element programs have been developed for structure, collision, flow, dynamics, heat transfer, acoustics, electromagnetism, MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems), and etc. These programs can be classified as “package” program and “single purpose” program. Single purpose programs usually have convenience and powerful functions, but these programs are difficult to expand into different fields of analysis. Therefore, the method to transfer the analysis results of single purpose program to other programs is needed. In the research, a multibody conversion method was created to input the flow analysis result of CFD-ACE+ to a package program, ANSYS. For example, the structure analysis of torque converter was conducted by the multibody conversion method.
토크컨버터의 성능 예측 정확성 향상을 위한 열유동 해석기법 연구

Recently, the steady and transient incompressible viscous turbulent flow is simulated for performance prediction of a torque converter with various numerical methods. In the previous study, even though the transient analysis requires substantial computational resource than that of steady analysis, both the steady and transient analysis predicted fairly accurate results with the experimental data. In the present study, the influence of viscosity variation on prediction of performance was investigated by thermo-fluid analysis. Flow regions of each parts of entire torque converter are modeled for the analysis by using the polyhedral mesh. The thermo-fluid analysis shows more accurate result than fluid analysis on the capacity factor.

As excellent shift quality is increasingly demanded in Automatic Transmission (in short : A/T), performance study of clutch control pressure has lately become a new subject of special interest, In particular, clutch control pressure needs high operational stability and quick response, To solve this problem, a notch effect of pressure control valve has firstly been examined using new' method like root locus in this study, Optimal geometric shape of the notch for PCV is also discussed, Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed triangle notch is one of the useful methods for the improvement of hydraulic stability and suppression of pressure riffle, Consequently, this study provides feasible results for hydraulic control system design

The lock-up clutch in the torque converter can improve highly the efficiency of power transfer from an engine by locking up with the transmission gears directly at a high speed instead of fluid coupling. Upon locking up, NVH problems take place due to shudder, friction material characteristics, and so on. Front cover taper angle, friction material, contact surface roughness and damper characteristics are important design parameters for improvement of drivability. Front cover taper angle is based on the surface pressure between front cover and friction facing. In this study, the pressure distribution of the contact surface is analyzed by finite element method. Also, we propose design optimization method for torque converter taper angle.

The secondary flow loss coefficient of a torque converter internal flow field has been expressed by an equation relating to torus flat ratio and rotating speed ratio. This equation was proved with comparing the result of one-dimensional analysis with that of three-dimensional simulation. With the increasing flat ratio and rotating speed ratio, this coefficient has increased. The same value of coefficient could be used for input torque capacity and output/input torque ratio for all speed ratio.
