        『골동품 가게』에 제시된 사회적 현실의 문제

        The purpose of this paper is to review the social reality in The Old Curiosity Shop and to examine some problems attendant on its tenuous delineation or the weak linkage between characters and circumstances. This work, despite its allegorical structure dependent upon the stark contrast between the good Nell Trent and the evil Daniel Quilp, does not rule out the social reality of the early nineteenth century England. The scenes around itinerant showmen like Codlin and Short, Miss Monflather's insistence upon the work ethic, and the industrial wretchedness of the Midland manufacturing town, together with the historial context and actuality testified by grandfather Trent's gambling addiction, help to establish the social meaning of this work. Dickens's portrayal of the social reality, however, is not fully connected with the plot itself, which is also related to the fact that Nell is basically shown to be sacrificed by her grandfather, not by Quilp. Grandfather Trent's symbolic rape of Nell reveals the transference from Quilp to himself of the ultimate liability for her death. That is, the saving values embodied in Nell are destroyed not by Quilp who epitomizes the corrupt world around her, but by the moral failure of her grandfather who is relatively removed from the social reality.

        교사 헤드스똔 성공과 좌절: 디킨즈의 <우리 서로의 친구>

        Dickens's last completed novel, Our Mutual Friend presents an interesting teacher figure named Bradley Headstone. While other teachers in Dickens's previous works are largely seen through the eyes of pupils and rarely outside the classroom, i.e., do not exist in their own right, he stands as a whole human being. His character is deeply affected by the fact that he comes from "a pauper lad" and succeeds as "a highly certificated stipendiary schoolmaster." His training and practice as a new type of teacher includes the formation of the fixed identity, or "normalized subject," which serves as a unit of the capitalist production. However, his success as a teacher leads to his failure. To rise in the scale of society, he should repress his natural energy or vitality, and foster the instrumental reason or narrow rationality as expected by the existing social order. His restrained energy breaks loose in the form of romantic love towards Lizzie, or violent action following the frustration of that love. This "return of the repressed" shows that his initial hope for respectability is brittle and groundless, for it denotes the "slave morality" which directs the "value-positing eye" ever to the outside, and turns to the approval of others for his existence. Headstone's essential tragedy lies in the fact that the grounds of his success are also those of his failure, and this comprises the paradox and contradiction of the modern world.

        모리스와 유토피아적 상상력

        This paper aims to examine the quality of William Morris's utopian imagination, as shown in his New from Nowhere and some articles. 'Nowhere' is an ideal England where all sorts of squalor and ugliness from the capitalist competition and exploitation are purged. It is the classless society, blessed with freedom and equality, without any tinge of dichotomy between mental labour and manual labour Art in this society is coterminous with the "expression by man of his pleasure in labour." The chapter named "How the Chance Came" describes the actual courses of revolutionary change: strikes, lock-outs, and armed fighting between the Combined Workers and the Friends of Order. This is proved to be the process of not only building new social system and organizations but also developing alternative values and adequate administrative abilities. Here is the point of Morris's imagination. That is, Morris is urging us to interrogate ourselves and our opinions, so that our habitual way of life might be dismantled. Due to Morris's utopian imagination we, the readers are able to enter into utopia's proper sphere, 'education of desire,' which is, according to E. P Thompson, "to open a way to aspiration, to teach desire to desire, to desire better, to desire more, and above all to desire in a different way." In short, 'Nowhere' is the product of Morris's imaginative commitment with reality, which has nothing to do with idle fantasy. Traditionally Marxism distinguishes the scientific socialism from the utopian socialism, and criticizes the latter for its day-dreaming and escapism. But Morris's utopian imagination makes him an original socialist thinker whose work might supplement the 'weakness' of Marxism.

        『골동품 가게』에 등장하는 스위블러의 변모와 성장

        Charles Dickens's The Old Curiosity Shop includes the stark contrasts not only between the good Nell and the evil Quilp but also between the fixed characters like Nell and Quilp and the changing ones like Swiveller and the Marchioness. Swiveller at the beginning of the work is shown to be a profligate and idle youth with great expectations. He, however, after the raging fever and the symbolic death attendant upon his inadvertent involvement in accusing Kit of stealing Sampson's money is born again as a genuine gentleman. That is, he not only transcends the class barrier, marrying the illiterate lower-class woman, the Marchioness but also learns social responsibility, rescuing Kit from the false imprisonment and exposing Quilp and the Brasses to justice. His redemption indebted to the Marchioness's discovery and care of him accompanies the transformation of the Marchioness herself from a passive victim suffering under the heel of Quilp and Sally into a clever woman exhibiting all the female virtues. The development of Swiveller's relationship with the Marchioness, though rather tenuously delineated, comprises an alternative to the unimaginative and oppressive social relations represented by Quilp and the Brasses.

        본고의 목적은 F. R. Leavis의 문학비평이 지니고 있는 몇 가지 특징을 검토하는 것이다. 예술가의 창조성이나 사유의 힘이 위대한 문학작품을 판별하는 그의 기준인데 이것은 '극시로서의 소설'에 대한 그의 일관된 관심과 연결된다. '극시로서의 소설'에, 대한 관심은 '시적인 구조를 지닌 것으로 그러나 동시에 인간의 사회적 상호관계의 극적 형상화'로서 소설작품을 대하겠다는 의도이다. 이 기준이 Walter Scott에게 적용될때 Leavis는 역사소설가로서 Scott가 독창적으로 지니는 장점을 간과하는 잘못을 범하는데 이러한 잘못은 유기적 농촌공동체에 대한 생각이나 작품의 유기적 전체성에 대한 그의 집착과 연결되어 있는 듯하다. 그러나 이 기준이 T. A. Jackson을 위시한 다른 어떤 비평가보다도 Leavis가 Charles Dickens의 창조성에 주목할 수 있도록 해준 측면도 있다. 후기에 Leavis가 창조성이나 문명에 대한 작가의 책임을 강조하는 낭만적 감수성을 중시하게 된 것도 현대의 '기술공학적. 벤삼적 문명'이 문화의 연속성에 필수불가결한 창조성이나 진정한 사유를 억누른다는 인식이 Leavis에 있어서 점증해 나간다는 사실을 보여주는 것이다. The purpose of this paper is to investigate some characteristics of F.R. Leavis's literary criticism. An artist's creativity or 'potency of thought' is Leavis's criterion in evaluating great literary works. This criterion is related with his consistent concern for 'novel as a dramatic poem', which is his idea to see 'the novel as poetic structure but also as dramatic rendering of man's social interrelations.' When this criterion is applied to Walter Scott, he overlooks Scott's merits which Scott originally has as a historical novelist. This error, I suppose, is linked with his notion on the organic agrarian community and his adhesion to the organic whole of a work. However, this criterion makes him pay attention to Dicken's creativity more cogently than any other critic such as T. A. Jackson, and so on. In the later phase, his accentuation on the romantic sensibility which emphasizes creativity or artist's responsibility for civilization reflects his growing awareness that modern 'technologico Benthamite civilization' represses genuine creativity or thought which is indispensable to the continuity of culture.

        『마틴 처즐윗』 연구: 조너스 처즐윗을 중심으로

        Dickens, in his preface to the Cheap Edition of Martin Chuzzlewit, says that the main object of this work is "to show how Selfishness propagates itself, and to what a grim giant it may grow, from small beginnings." Jonas Chuzzlewit's selfishness, or his greed surpasses that of other characters including Martin Chuzzlewit, Seth Pecksniff, and Mrs Gamp. His impatience for inheritance and violence toward his wife reflect his longing for social recognition, the ruthless pursuit of which makes him nothing but an arch villain, though. Montague Tigg, after getting to know Jonas's secret of patricide, blackmails him to obey his instructions, and Jonas resolves to murder Tigg, because there is no way of escaping Tigg's clutches. Jonas thereafter emerges as a living character, not a stereotypical villain, through the vivid evocation of his psychology, that is, his terrified self-division. The portrayal of the later Jonas, together with the writer's awareness of the social interconnections, comprises the chief achievements of Martin Chuzzlewit, which is a transition between Dickens's early works and mature later ones.

        불필요한 연산이 없는 카라슈바 알고리즘과 하드웨어 구조

        In this paper we propose the Modified Karatsuba-Ofman algorithm for polynomial multiplication to polynomials of arbitrary degree. Leone proposed optimal stop condition for iteration of Karatsuba-Ofman algorithm(KO). In this paper, we propose a Non-Redundant Karatsuba-Ofman algorithm (NRKOA) with removing redundancy operations, and design a parallel hardware architecture based on the proposed algorithm. Comparing with existing related Karatsuba architectures with the same time complexity, the proposed architecture reduces the area complexity. Furthermore, the space complexity of the proposed multiplier is reduced by 43% in the best case. Divide-and-Conquer.방법은 병렬 곱셈기의 구성에 잘 적용되며 가장 대표적으로 카라슈바 방법이 있다. Leone은 최적 반복 회수를 카라슈바 알고리즘에 적용하였으며 Ernst는 다중 분할 카라슈바 방법을 제안하였다. 본 논문에서는 카라슈바 알고리즘에서 불필요한 연산이 제거된 불필요한 연산이 없는 카라슈바 알고리즘과 효율적인 하드웨어 구조를 제안한다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 알고리즘은 기존의 카라슈바 알고리즘에 비교하여 같은 시간 복잡도를 가지나 공간 복잡도를 효율적으로 감소시킨다. 특히 확장체의 차수 이 홀수 및 소수일 때 더 효율적이며 최대 43%까지 공간 복잡도를 줄일 수 있다.
