In this study, we propose the common intermediate storage(CIS) policy which is more efficient than mixed intermediate storage(MIS) policy. The CIS policy is a form of shared storage system, which is extended to overall processes and can be applied to flexible inter-stage intermediate storage policies. Using this strategy, we developed a new completion time algorithm and applied it to two kinds of optimal or near optimal scheduling method; the combinatorial search and the simulated annealing method. We also extended the CIS policy for flexible operation of intermediate storage policy with proper on/off electronic valves and pumps. It thus can be accepted as a basic form of FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System) for operating various storage policies. Finally we suggested the PLC logic of safety interlock to complement the difficult application of CIS policy, i.e, complication of operation and safety, resulting in a part of basic batch process automation mode.

In this study, we propose a shared storage system which is more efficient policy than MIS (Mixed Intermediate Storage) policy for relatively rare storage system and can be called CIS (Common Intermediate Storage) policy. Using this strategy, we develop a new completion time algorithm and apply it to two kinds of optimal or near optimal scheduling method; combinatorial search and simulated annealing method. We also extend this strategy to other storage policy, for exemple MIS policy, with PLC(programmable Logic Controller) logic and on/off action of electronic valves. It thus can be accepted as a basic form of FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System) for operating various storage policies. Finally we suggest the interlocking block to compansate for the shortcoming of CIS policy, i.e, complication of operation and safety, resulting in a basic batch process automation mode.

The optimal design of batch plants considering scheduling effects gives us savings of capital cost. Using a nonlinear programming formulation, which includes zero wait scheduling policy with cleanup and transfer times, we propose a method to obtain the optimum size and production sequence. The effectiveness of this method is verified by solving two problems.
