The object of this thesis is to study of John Steinbeck's view of morality, specifically the aspects of affairs between morals and conflict, which is characteristic of the group-organism that depicts reality as it is. First of all, this novel is composed of six chapters. The first is progressed in conflict with rulers, White and ruled, Indian, the second is the chapter of Kino interior conflict for becoming rich with the full possession of pearl, the third is the conflict between the essence of pearl and human being's essence, the fourth is the conflict Kino and social morality, the fifth is the conflict of desire of not being able to give up pearl and the sixth represents moral relief through conflict. For that reason, Kino's inner conflict is occurring from chapterⅡ to chapter Ⅴ, which consist of Kino's long desire and is a conflict of human original side of colliding a whole society. In the novel, as the development of conflict is extended and strengthened gradually through the process of the possession of pearl, it leads to an itinerary of Kino's quest of morality simultaneously with sincere self-discovery. Steinbeck exhibits significantly class distinctions brought about by race conflict his lifetime and the development process of the inconsistency in The Pearl. Therefore, we can look furtively at moral attribute that class order has in a work of novel and how it is expressed concretely according to each class. Accordingly, as a man such as Kino is aware of morality and liberty and insists, such behavior is eventually an extrication play of an Indian family of escaping from an institutionalized formula that arrogant Whites set up recklessly.

Cannery Row of Monterey, a well-known tourist attraction in California, used to be a paradise or an empire of sardines, which is considered as a critical forage fish from the 1920s to the 1940s. The city, however, witnessed the dramatic rise and fall of sardine fisheries and canneries, which looks like a legendary affair or a habitual topic among the residents and the tourists there. This paper studies the causes of the sardine crisis occurring in the late 1940s in the light of the previous research and materials and arrives at the lessons left to the marine ecology of the 21st century

Of Mice and Men, one of John Steinbeck's famous labor novels, has been studied mostly as to its tragic conclusion that George shoots his best-friend Lennie. However, the work describes how the writer treats the racism of the American 1930s, which Crooks, a stable man and an African American, experiences. This paper discusses Steinbeck's interest and art about the character's loneliness in the light of Charles Johnson and Michael J. Meyer's articles. For the research method, I review the story from Crooks's angle and study the reality of his loneliness. Through the analysis, Crooks seems to live in the limit of racial discrimination, which is revealed in the scene where Curley's wife threatens to attack him. However, his solitude has a duality of positive and negative meaning, which leads to Steinbeck's art of paradox and idea of breaking through or holism. This attempt is expected to extend the literature study of the 20th century American novels saying African Americans and their humanitarian context.
