The significance of plaque bacteria and its toxin in the etiology of various periodontal diseases has been well established. The purpose of this study is to develop laboratory marker in adult periodontitis. Five patients with adult periodontitis were examined. Bacterial morphotype was observed by phase contrast microscope. Microflora was isolated by selective and nonselective media. Data was analysed between healthy sites and disease sites by paired T-test. Wolinella recta in the disease sites was isolated more frequently than that of healthy sites and the proportion of Actinomyces in the healthy sites were higher than that in the disease sites. These results suggested that Wolinella recta in the disease sites and Actinomyces in the healthy sites might be the marker of adult periodontitis in Koreans. Further study is needed to clarify the in vitro virulence of Wolinella recta.

Experiments were carried out to study the adsorption of silver from a cyanide solution on activated carbon. The tests were conducted on a variation of inital silver concentration (Co), carbon amount(W). mixing speed, particle size and adsorption temperature. The experimental data were found to fit Freundlich adsorption isotherm as well as Langmuir adsorption isotherm. It was found that the loading carpacity of the carbon was 20 ㎎ Ag/g carbon. The isosteric heat of adsorption was found to be 1.48 ㎉/g-mole, indicating physical adsorption. The experimental results were finally compared with the theoretical results obtained by the mathematical modeling equation. A correlation equation was also developed to predict the late of apparent adsorption. Good agreements were obtained.

The extraction of alumina as a chloride from the calcined clay was about 91% when leached with a 20 w/o HCl solutions for two hours. Alumina extraction from the uncalcined clay was 80% when leached with 20 w/o HCl at 110℃ for 4½ hrs. It was found that the leaching rate was influenced by temperature, acid concentration, and not by particle sizes. From the temperature dependence of the leaching rate, the activation energy was determined to be 7.7 Kcal/㏖. The impurity in pregnant solution, Fe, was removed to the degree of 91% using the solvent extraction technique under the condition of 30 v/o-TBP and O/A=1.

Catalytic oxidation of ammonia is as familiar to us as "Ostwald Process" in which platinum is adapted as a catalyst. Owing to the expensiveness of platinum, catalysts of base metal oxides are developed. The mixt ures of iron and bismuth oxide, iron and cobaltoxide, etc. are well known to give a good oxidation coefficient in the temperature range of 600℃~ 800℃. But their heat resistance is not so good and catalytic activity connot be maintained for a long period at high temperatures. Therefore oxidation of ammonia at low temperature with the base metal oxides is the important questions for consideration. The catalytic activities of the Fe-Bi-Ca three component system catalysts at low temperatures are examined. The results of the preliminary and main experiments are summarized as follows. Using the catalysts of the Fe-Bi-Ca three component system, the following similarities are found. Oxides of nitrogen begin to be generated at a temperature of 300℃; at a temperature of 400℃, the oxidation coefficient of ammonia to oxides exceeds 10% ; above the temperature of 400℃, the higher the temperature, the greater the reaction of the oxidation coefficient of ammonia to the oxides. Among the catalysts of the Fe-Bi-Ca three component system, the Fe:Bi ratio is fixed to 97.5: 2.5 and only the calcium percentage is variable. Catalyst composed of Fe(96.3%), Bi(2.72%) and Ca(0. 98%), shows the highest oxidation coefficient and as the calcium percentage increases in the ternary system, the catalytic activity decreases. Oxidation of ammonia is remarkably influenced by the variation of flow rate of mixed gas. Considering the oxidation coefficient to nitrogen oxides and the decomposition coefficient separately, the oxidation coefficient to the oxides is gradually raised with the increase of the flow rate. On the other hand, the coeffiicent is decreased as the flow rate increases. The total oxidation coefficient is reduced as the result of summation of the two factors above. And the unchanged percentage of ammonia increases with the increase of flow rate.
