        A Semantic and Pragmatic Approach to English Gapping Constructions

        As one of the problematic linguistic phenomena in English, gapping has been studied extensively in the past forty years. While most linguists agree that gapping is a form of ellipsis and therefore, strictly obeys the rules of syntax, it cannot be ignored that semantic and pragmatic factors(influences) also affect the production, interpretation and acceptability of gapping constructions. These independent linguistic processes seem to function together in the case of gapping, so as to render gapped structures meaningful and accessible. However, ambiguous structures resulted from these factors and interpreting them in one way or another has been one of the challenges faced by linguists. The present paper tries to provide a new analysis of gapping which takes into account semantic and pragmatic factors in the production and interpretation of gapping constructions. It proposes that these influences do not take place randomly, but rather, they are structured hierarchically and obey certain rules of production and interpretation.

        한국의 농촌개발 경험이 베트남에 주는 시사점

        Korea is becoming a model country for the developing countries’ agricultural and rural development. Drawing implications for Vietnam from Korea’s experiences can help make development strategies and policies for other developing countries including North Korea as well as for Vietnam itself. Vietnam is facing an inefficiency in agricultural production and the gap between urban and rural growth has been widening. Farm sizes per household are small and farmlands are scattered. Diversification in rural industry is very restricted. To attack these problems, investment is urgently needed for rural infrastructure building as well as agricultural structure adjustment. In the process of rural development, there have been also encountered such problems as financial procurement, community’s spontaneous participation, manpower development for adjusting to industrial structural change. Korea’s experiences may be helpful for establishing rural development strategies and policies in Vietnam. Benchmark scopes can go beyond Saemaul Undong in 1970s. Korea’s pre- and post-Saemaul Undong era as well as the Saemaul Undong era can be referred. In the wake of globalization, Vietnam has not only experienced compressed rapid economic growth but also encountered policy tasks to eradicate poverty, to realize self-reliance and income increase, and to lessen urban-rural development gap, at the same time. Korea’s experiences show that priority needs to be put on the establishment of national and rural development strategies based on Vietnam-specific conditions, utilization of village’s resources including community tradition and social capital, fund raising for rural development, farmland development and mobilization, production and living infrastructure building, technology transfer for farmers and vocational training for new job seekers.

      • 2015 개정 영어과 교육과정에 따른 초등학교 3, 4학년군 영어 교과서의 의사소통기능 비교분석

        The purpose of this paper is to investigate the selection and specification of the communicative functions for lesson units in the current 3rd and 4th grade English textbooks. For this purpose, this study tries to analyze whether English textbooks of third and fourth grades are systematically sequenced and tries to find out how often are communicative functions presented in the textbooks. In short the current five kinds of English textbooks used in the elementary school have a problem with the articulation because only about 38.0 percent of communicative functions are systematically graded. The current English textbook does not seem to be effective for both teachers and elementary school students.

        창의적인 구문드라마 활동을 통한 문법지도가 초등영어 쓰기능력에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the grammar teaching using creative syntax drama - an attempt which may seem contrary to present elementary school English curriculum -on children's writing competence in the elementary school. For this purpose, two groups of the 136 sixth graders were selected, an experimental group and a control group. Students from the experimental group were taught English grammatical rules, punctuation, and capitalization rules appropriate to their grade level using various student-centered activities including creative syntax drama performance. After 13 weeks' instructions, two groups were compared in terms of students' abilities in written English. The results reveal that the experimental group was better on English grammar achievement test than their counterparts. The findings show that grammatical knowledge is strongly related to the writing skills for the elementary school students. It will be reasonable to conclude that grammar is a significant component of the four language skills and grammar instruction needs to be given to the students in the primary grades.

        대학신입생들의 영어글쓰기에 나타난 영문법 사용의 오류에 대한 연구

        English writing has always been a knotty subject for EFL learners. As a vital skill, it needs to receive more attention. Therefore, analyzing EFL learner’s errors in their writings can be a great help for teachers to become aware of the sources and types of these errors and employ more efficient teaching methods so that EFL learners can better acquire English writing skills. The primary goal of this study is find out common errors made by university students in the use of English grammar and to identify the major causes of their occurrence. For the purpose of this study, 30 students of CNUE students were selected. Those 30 students were all enrolled in the first year and received 2 hours of Current English instruction per week during the academic year. In this paper, four categories of grammatical errors were analyzed. The results obtained in this research study revealed that 42.4% of the errors made in English writings were morphological errors. .

        A Study of the Subject and EPP in the Expletive ‘there’ Construction

        This paper is concerned with many research gaps that can be found in the previous studies on the Extended Projection Principle(conventionally abbreviated to EPP) in the English expletive construction. The EPP was originally formulated by Chomsky(1981) because of the obligatoriness of a subject in a clause and the appearance of an expletive in existential constructions in English. Since then, expletives have always been hot issues of many researchers and subject to different analyses within the different stages of the generative theories (see Chomsky 1981, 1986, 1995, 1998; Lasnik 1992, 1995; Frampton and Gutman 1997; among others). However, many syntactic controversies relating with EPP in the expletive constructions have not yet been properly accounted for even within the recent version of the minimalist program. Therefore, this paper reviews the literature on the theoretical developments of the EPP in the English expletive there construction from existing research perspectives and controversies surrounding it and also explore Chomsky’s minimalist account of the subject expletive there in fulfillment of the EPP requirement.
