        A Socio-historical Study of Vowel Raising in Australian and Canadian English

        This study presents a comparative analysis of Australian English (AE) and Canadian English (CE) related to Vowel Raising in a socio-historical aspect. AE and CE differ in many ways. In particular, among the characteristics of CE, Canadian Raising (CR) is relatively well known for its difference in pronunciation due to the influence of the Great Vowel Shift (GVS). However, little research has been done on whether there is a similar vowel raising in AE, and it is linguistically meaningful to identify the differences by considering the characteristics. In particular, among many differences, when pronouncing the vowel in “Price” when a voiceless consonant comes after a diphthong, the CR phenomenon occurs in Canadian English compared to American English or British English. Through the comparison and analysis, we investigate whether the CR phenomenon is occurring in Australia, a commonwealth country. If the differences between AE and CE, which are the mother tongues of the world Englishes, are recognized, it will be evident that students benefit a lot from them.

        ESP 연구방향성의 사회역사적 연구

        Research in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) inherently differs from general English (GE) education, as ESP targets specific needs, thus distinguishing itself from the broader objectives of traditional English instruction. Due to the specialized nature of learners' environments, the development of ESP courses demands more precise and systematic approaches than those used in general education. It is significant to examine the evolution of existing research methodologies within ESP and to anticipate future directions. As the utilization and analysis of English vary substantially across different fields and disciplines, it is essential for researchers to discern and define the directions of ESP research. Thus, future research in ESP should develop digital literacy programs tailored to specific professional needs and enhancing ESP teacher education to address multicultural, multilingual contexts effectively. These efforts will elevate ESP to a more significant academic discipline, ensuring its relevance amidst rapid global and technological changes, and establish its foundational role in English education. To achieve this, there should be concerted efforts to facilitate ongoing research aimed at addressing the extant gaps in ESP education and learning.

        법음성학을 통한 목소리 감정 분석

        This paper describes the trend related to Forensic *Phonetics and attempts to analyze speakers’s emotions based on their utterances. So, it pursues to unearth the connection of emotions with the application of the language through the approach. The concept of Forensic Linguistics, which is unfamiliar in Korea, is introduced in the paper, and by analyzing speakers’ emotions with their utterance in accordance with the theories of the forensic linguistics, it is possible to analyze the signal of the speakers through the scientific approach and therefore to contribute to appropriate communication. We use WaveSurfer to find the relationship between emotions and voices through Canadian and American subjects. We try to analyze the emotion of the voice through the acoustic phonetics. It can be expected that the examination on the low-profile theories and the analysis of speakers’ emotions by the theories will help effective and clear understanding in communication.

        MSCs and SSCs in Relatiue Markedness. In this paper I propose a theory of Relative Markedness, where the value of context-sensitive markedness is distinguished from that of context-free markedness within Morpheme Structure Constraints(MSCs) and Syllable Structure Constraints(SSCs). The value of context-sensitive markedness will be supplied only by the language-specific context, while the value of context-free markedness by the universal context. Within this framework, MSCs and SSCs will be discussed. For better account for MSCs and SSCs in English, Ⅰ propose Markedness Reversal and Complementarity in a theory of Relative Markedness.

        영어의 음운현상과 유표성

        The paper has proposed the analysis of markedness, concentrating mainly on English phonological phenomena. It has been demonstrated that the English phonological phenomena can be accounted for by assuming markedness constraints. First of all, the problem of the different markedness systems for different phonological phenomena has disappeared. There exists one unified system of markedness, regulated by the consistent criteria. Second, we suggest the principles of English phonological phenomena in markedness phonology. The study uses markedness notions about phonological phenomena such as sound changes, distinctive features, marked and unmarked sounds, phonotactics, syllable structure, language typology, language acquisition, universal markedness, lexical representation, underspecification, and Optimality Theory. Third, English phonological phenomena may be able to get straightforwardly accounted for and do not require some complicated derivation. The study considers in detail the complex phenomena which obtain various interactions with markedness constraints.

        The Status of Markedness in Phonology

        언어 보편적으로 또한 언어 특수적으로 비대칭의 패턴이 존재한다는 것은 논쟁의 여지가 없다. 비대칭의 언어학적 표현으로 유표성(markedness)은 여러 가지 방식으로 그 용어가 널리 중요하게 사용되어 왔다. 이 논문은 음운론에서 논쟁의 여지가 있는 유표성의 지위와 역할을 연구한다. 유표성의 역사, 영어와 한국어에서 유표성과 동화, 그리고 유표성의 위계에 관하여 이론적 문제점 등이 논의된다. 유표성의 개념은 여러 가지 방식으로 확대되고, 발전되어 왔다. 그래서 유표성의 특징은 명확하지 않다. 유표성은 음변화와 위계에 비추어보면 보편성과 언어특수한 특성을 지니는 것으로 나타난다. 유표성은 음운론에서 중요한 지위를 지니고, 그것의 재정의가 상대성(relativity)을 기초로 재정의 되어야 함을 논쟁한다.

        자질수형도에서의 AT 와 PT

        There are two theories concerning the Place Node in the feature geometry. I can call them articulator theory(AT) and place of articulation theory(PT) according to McCarthy (1988). The two theories make different predictions regarding the natural classes of segments, values of the features, and markedness. I compare the two theories of the Place Node. In conclusion, I suggest that PT makes better sense in accounting for Korean and English coronal assimilation with markedness, even though my position needs further confirmation.
