Copper smelting experiments according to the traditional method have never been perfomed in Korea. In this study, we performed a smelting experiment using chalcopyrite refer to experiments conducted in Japan. In order to verify the experiment, analytical mathods such as WD-XRF, SEM-EDS are used to give chemical compisition and microstructure of by-products and materials used in the experiment. WD-XRF results show that sulfur content of chalcopyrite was high, so the roasting process was performed in order to remove it. After roasting, sulfur content of chalcopyrite decreased from 35.99% to 20.63%, but the decreasing amount was not large, so the roasting did not work properly. Metallurgical microscope and SEM-EDS analysis results show that tap slags and furnace bottom slags were similar. Both slags were glassy and small grains that look like copper have been identified. Through the EDS analysis, the small grains included a large amount of sulfur, iron and copper content so it was matte. The analysis results show that a matte obtained through this smelting experiment. The matte included a large amount of sulfur and iron content, so that there is a need for additional processes such as roasting of the matte, reduction, slagging and refining to obtain copper.
