백제는 중국 혹은 일본과의 활발한 교류를 통하여 발전한 국가였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 특히 일본과의 왕래에 사용되었던 뱃길에 대해서는 구체적 논의가 거의 이루어져 있지 않다. 본고에서는 백제의 대왜항로에 대하여, 가장 일반적인 노선이 가라츠 방면, 가카라시마 근해를 경유하는 노선이었다는 견해를 『일본서기』의 무령왕 출생에 대한 기록을 주요 근거로 하여 구체적으로 전개하였다. 그동안 무령왕의 가카라시마 출생 기록은 이에 대한 부정적 인식 때문에 이 자료가 갖고 있는 고대 해로 관련의 자료적 가치가 간과되었다. 고토열도(五島列島) 혹은 오키노시마를 경유하는 노선은 지리적 조건상 백제~왜의 일반적 항로로 기능하기에는 어려운 점이 있다. 가카라시마는 한반도와 일본열도를 잇는 가장 거리가 가까운 지점이며, 쓰시마, 잇키섬을 잇는 징검다리 섬의 하나라는 점에서 해로상의 의미를 갖는다. 백제 이전이나 이후에도 이 노선이 사용된 많은 사례들을 확인할 수 있다. 가카라시마 근해의 해로에 대한 조사에서는 이 섬이 해로 이용자들에게 중요한 랜드마크가 되었으리라는 점이 인정 되었다. 해로 문제와 연관하여, 본고는 5~6세기 대왜 교류에 이용된 백제선이 돛을 이용한 구조선(構造船)이었을 것이라는 견해를 제시하였다. 앞으로 고대 선박의 자료의 발굴 가능성이 상존하기 때문에, 백제선에 대한 연구는 이러한 고대 자료의 발견이 이루어지면 훨씬 구체적인 논의가 가능하게 될 것이다. Baekje was a kingdom which prospered through active exchange with China and Japan. Nevertheless, there are few discussions on sea lane used particularly for travel to Japan. This paper specifically develops an opinion that the lane most usually taken from Baekje to Wae was toward Karatsu via coast of Kakarashima based on record of King Muryeong``s birth in Nihonshoki. Because of the negative awareness, the record of King Muryeong``s birth on Kakarashima has been overlooked for its value as material related to ancient sea lane. It is challenging for a lane via Goto Islands or Okinoshima to serve as a general sea lane between Baekje and Japan for its geographical conditions. Kakarashima is the closest point between Korean Peninsula and Japanese archipelago and it has significance as a sea lane in that it functions as a stepping-stone island along with Tsushima and Iki Island. It is frequently observed that this lane was used both before and after Baekje. A research on sea lanes around Kakarashima coast acknowledges that this island could have been an important landmark to those who used the sea lane. Regarding the sea lane, this paper presents an opinion that Baekje``s ships used for exchange with Japan in the 5-6th century were structural ones using sail. As it is probable to excavate materials on ancient vessels, studies on Baekje``s ships can be more concretely conducted upon discovery of such ancient materials.
