한국어교육 분야에서 문화교육의 목표는 주로 한국어 의사소통 능력 향상을 중심으로 논의되어 왔다. 그러나 최근 한국 대학(원)에 진학하는 외국인 유학생의 수가 급증하면서 학문 목적 한국어 학습자를 위해 차별화된 한국문화 교육에 관한 논의가 필요한 시점이다. 본고에서는 학문 목적 한국어 학습자를 위한 문화교육의 목표를 한국어 의사소통 능력 향상뿐 아니라 대학에서의 학문수행을 위한 문화적, 학문적 배경지식을 형성하는 것으로 재설정하고, 그 동안 문화교육이 언어교육의 부수적 요소로 활용되었던 데서 벗어나 중심적 내용지식으로 다루어질 수 있는 문화중심 교재의 개발을 목표로 하였다. 문화교육의 내용면에서는 「국제 통용 한국어 교육 표준 모형」의 문화항목을 바탕으로 학습자의 실제 요구 및 대학에서의 학문수행에 필요하다고 판단되는 항목을 추가적으로 반영하여 학부 유학생을 위한 한국문화 항목을 선정, 제시하였다. 문화교육의 방법 면에서는 문화교육을 지식 전달의 관점에서 다룬 언어교수 이론을 참고하여, 각 문화 항목의 성격과 실제 수업의 단계를 고려한 수업 방안을 구상하여 제시하였다. 본고의 논의는 학문 목적 한국어교육 분야에서 차별화된 문화교육이 이루어질 필요성이 있음을 인식하고, 문화를 지식의 차원에서 적극적으로 교육할 수 있는 방안을 모색하였다는 데 의의가 있다. 본고의 논의를 바탕으로 다양하고 광범위한 한국문화 항목을 외국인 유학생의 필요에 맞게 체계적으로 교육할 수 있는 교재 개발 및 교육방안 마련에 관한 논의가 더욱 활발하게 이어져야 한다. Cultural education in the field of Korean-language education has mainly been aimed at improving communication skills in Korean. However, as the number of foreign students who go onto graduate schools in Korea dramatically increases, there should be wider discussions on the differentiated education of Korean culture for the learners of Korean language for academic purpose among foreign students. This study aimed to reestablish the objective of cultural education for foreign learners of Korean language for academic purpose for not only improving the communication skills in Korean, but also building up the cultural and academic background knowledge for the learning performance at universities, as well as developing a textbook focusing on Korean culture, which has been used as an element incidental to language education. In terms of the content of cultural education, this study has additionally reflected the actual requirements of learners based on the cultural items of standard model and items which were judged necessary for the learning performance at universities. Besides, it has accordingly selected and suggested the necessary items of Korean culture for foreign undergraduate students. With regard to the method of cultural education, a language teaching method which covers the propagation of cultural knowledge was referred to, and the classes which consider the characteristics of each cultural item and class stage was planned and suggested. This study has great significance in that it has given an idea of implementing a differentiated cultural education in the field of Koreanlanguage education for academic purpose and that a method of educating the culture from the perspective of academic knowledge had been sought. Based upon discussions in this study, a broad variety of Korean cultural items have to be incorporated into the development of textbooks which enable teachers to systematically teach foreign students to cope with their needs, and more active discussions on the preparation for effective educational methods should be done.
