This study examines that Antigone by Sophocles and Antigone of 2019 by Sophie Deraspe are disaster humanities to describe the reality of national laws causing disaster to individuals. Antigones in the drama and movie experience disaster because of the law in their societies. The laws don’t protect them but give suppression and marginalization. The laws of Athens did not define women as independent subjects. Antigone by Deraspe claims that the law that sentenced Antigone’s sacrifice guilty is unfair. Two works not only describe the resistance against the unjust oppression imposed by the laws but raise public awareness of the disaster inflicted on the week. The movie emphasizes on the solidarity, which means the stop against the violence of the others or the week, and hope for the society coexisting with them.

This study focuses on how a rumor reflects a rumor group’s desire and subverts their power relationship in Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. Studying rumors in the text helps understand real problems and unconscious desires in the rumor community. Sharing Rumors means that when someone hears and distributes a rumor, he or she takes part in generating the outcome of a group-work and its illusion caused by the group members’ interactions. So, rumors provide a way to understand the desire and paradox of various characters and situations in the text. Studying rumors also helps understand that a rumor is not a sub-language under a main plot but a political language which reflects unconscious desires in a rumor group. A rumor as an informal language is political in that it is engaged with the power relation between the predators and a victim. The rumor afflicting Hannah Baker, the protagonist, is in reality a metonymy of some students’ desire for empowerment and anxiety of the fear of being deprived. Hannah confronts her false rumor by killing herself, but leaving recording tapes, which finally reveal their realities and deprive them of power. This study examines these aspects by using three ways: the relation between rumors and space, the rumors as a camouflage of power, and the subversion of rumors.

This study examines why human identity needs to be reconsidered and what needs to establish a relationship with other forms of life at the Post-human ages, by focusing on A Number by Caryl Churhill. A Number shows clones who have greater empathy and thinking ability than humans have. They also have an explicit self-esteem, but are confused about their identity. So important are the questions like “who is a real human?” and “whose identity belongs to them?” to understand humans and them. Churchill answers the questions by presenting them as Salter’s ‘being father’ and ‘doing father’. She also shows that ‘being a father’, which is Salter’s desire, is only to be a Narcissistic fantasy which our scientific technology society dreams by copying the cells. Salter, as an origin of his biological son and his clones, asks for the respect of his authority but it gradually turns out that he is not worth it. Therefore, it emphasizes the new recognition of human subjectivity, focusing on the interconnection between the others and human beings. This study is about the beginning of post-humans’ thinking that breaks down the boundaries between human and other forms of life. It is also Churchill’s hope of human conditions in the future and her answer to the problem of “natural” and “cultivation” emerging from the technology of human cloning.

This study examines how AI-based movies predict a positive future for AI. Most films produce extreme narratives that foster anxiety and fear about AI. In addition, most AIs in these films, after passing through singularity, pose an existential risk to humans. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, there appear two kinds of strong AI: hostile AI and friendly AI. The film also shows the process by which AI develops from a human assistant into a superhuman. Thus, it focuses on the development potential of artificial intelligence as a human colleague and the conditions for this development. The scenes where artificial intelligence transforms into a superhero and stands against evil highlight to viewers that artificial intelligence can have a significant positive effect on human life, especially where concerns and expectations intersect. The film shows that it is possible to have companionship and collaboration with humanized AI in a society. Above all, the film conveys the message that technology can improve human life through human-to-AI interaction and cooperation. Although many science fiction films express concerns about autonomous AI, this film suggests that such concerns can be a driving force toward a positive future by accelerating the development of safety devices and establishing AI ethics.

Woo, Seungjeung. “The Meaning of Metamorphoses through Mythic Reshape by Mary Zimmerman.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 125-146. This paper examines how Mary Zimmerman appropriates and changes a canonical text, Ovid’s Metamorphoses into her own modern and feminist representation. In the theatrical aspect, she adapts the classical text and reshapes some stories in it using a feminist theatrical way, that is, giving the voice to women. She also modernizes the old stories by assigning the roles of narrators to women. This leads the audiences to contemplate upon the truth in human lives and the fixed stereotypes like myths in the society. It thus helps to understand them from different perspectives. Considering her theme, she is well known to deal with the modern case studies of abnormal personalities: those of neurosis, self-love, compulsive greed, incest, etc. She also presents the images and verbal message on the brilliant ideas about loss and change after painful experiences of love. In this right, Zimmerman, one of the cultural creative playwrights in the 1980-90s, found the modern myth which visualizes the contemporary society and embodies feminist ideas in the representation of concern for others and love in it. This article is an attempt to analyze agons and their effects in Antigone. Agon originally refers to the actual act of competition or game. But it is also used to refer to dialogue in the tragedies and debates within court settings. This work has two thematic agons both in the dialogues and the debates in the court: the agon of sovereignty and the agon of law and justice. Nietzsche explains that agon in the ancient Greek culture played a key role in change from destructive struggling into creative competition. This work shows such positive aspects of vehement competition: Creon vs Haemon and Creon vs Antigone. Their agons are based on the steadfast political and ethical philosophy, and logically develop into the debate on whether the law of polis is superior or the unwritten law of gods. This conflict makes the audience consider the ethical and political priority in the changing period in ancient Greece. The Antigone by Sophocles is arguably a good source to study this trend, and the guide of its modern application.

This study focuses on modern Antigones’ ordeals and sufferings caused by the irrationality and partiality of laws in Antigone Project. It also examines their continuing efforts and struggles against the suppression and unjustice in modern democratic societies. Five plays included in the work were written by 5 female playwrights. In the work, Antigone symbolizes a conscientious fighter as well as a person excluded from public areas by power and laws. Each playwright commonly thinks that the modern Antigones’ efforts toward peace or justice are in crisis more severely in the process of ‘the war against terrorism’ due to the leaders’ hysteric reaction and the suppression of governmental authorities in democratic countries since the 9/11 terror. They also think that reviving Antigone is needed because she acts against the unjust reality, and is willing to sacrifice herself for defending human rights and dignities. This is why the work uses the motif of revival. When Antigone rises again, she does not adjust herself to her fate, but continues struggles to change the society, as the hope and potential for a new history are achievable. Moreover, she invites people to take part in her efforts to stop injustice and suppression under modern democratic countries.

This study aims to examine Antigone’ role of raising a question to the state-oriented ideology in Ancient Greek, and analyze what it signifies to women in charge of the private sphere, Oikos. It also explains that Antigone the protagonist’s role as the heroine overwhelming male characters is intended to educate the audience the dynamics: a new public order cannot be realized without respecting the private world when the private world conflicts with the public world. Sophocles’ Antigone presents the problem as a family conflict through the confrontation between Antigone, who wants to protect the private sphere, and Creon, who prioritizes the protection of the state. So Athenian audiences can realistically consider the cause demanded by the state. In it, Antigone serves as a person who raises a question to the ideological coercion of the public world. Antigone shows that a woman’s voice limited to the private sphere awakens the dignity of women and the importance of the realm in relation to national power, even though the work adopts the typical image of women in ancient literature. In the end, this can be regarded as being in line with feminism’s politics of participation in the reality in that the woman educated the public on how to modify and supplement the male-centered political world.

This article examines what bullying students might commit in school when they thoughtlessly act in Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. It also studies what such thoughtless behaviors can cause, and what a few students do to stop the tragedy. ‘Thoughtlessness’ is a key word to understanding the bullying and the bullies, who are usually considered to be ordinary and harmless. Because all students are closely connected in school, even seemingly hurtless words and behaviors influence others in unexpected ways. The text shows the process in which a rumor from an ordinary but thoughtless male student spreads all over the school. The rumor leads to the second harm, influencing other students, and consequently drives a victim to death. In the process, any bullies do not apologize without taking responsibilities for their wrongdoing. Asher’s work is useful for finding out the inseparable relation between violence and ‘the banality of evil,’ a dictum used by Hannah Arendt. It might suggest a way to rectify thoughtless bullies.
