Poly(vinyl alcohol)/sericin(PVA/sericin) blend fiber was prepared successfully using lithium chloride/dimethylsulfoxide(LiCl/DMSO) solvent system. Sericin could be dissolved up to 30% (w/v) in 1 M LiCl/DMSO solvent. The concentration of the dope solution and the blend ratio affect critically on the spinnability of PVA/sericin blend fiber. The high content of sericin in PVA/sericin blend fiber was achieved and it was at least three times higher than previous researches. The secondary structure of PVA/sericin blend film was revealed by ATR FT-IR. The secondary structure of sericin was changed from random coil to ${\beta}$-aggregate state by methanol.

Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the parameters of tear function and ocular surface in patients with pinguecula and pterygium. Methods: The corneal sensitivity test (CST), tear break-up time (BUT), basal tear secretion test, fluorescein staining, rose bengal staining, tear clearance test, and conjunctival impression cytology were evaluated in patients with unilateral pinguecula and pterygium. The results were also evaluated according to the severity of pterygium. Results: In patients with pinguecula, BUT (P=0.03) and goblet cell density (P<0.01) were decreased, while the rose bengal staining score (P=0.01) was increased significantly. In patients with pterygium, CST (P=0.01), BUT (P<0.01), and goblet cell density (P<0.01) decreased, and the fluorescein staining score (P<0.01), rose bengal staining score (P<0.01) and grade of conjunctival metaplasia (P<0.01) increased significantly. In comparison with mild pterygium, moderate pterygium demonstrated decreased CST (P=0.01) and BUT (P=0.01), and an increased rose bengal staining score (P=0.04). Conclusions: The tear films and ocular surface changes in patients with pinguecula and pterygium are worse than in control group. Also, there is close correlation between the severity of pterygium and dry eye condition.
실크섬유의 방사과정에서 실크 세리신의 역할에 관한 고찰(I) - 실크 세리신 존재 하에서 실크 피브로인의 결정화 및 겔화 거동에 관한 연구 -

The effect of sericin on the crystallization and gelation of fibroin was studied. We used urea-mercaptoethanol for extraction of sericin from silkworm cocoons. The degradation of sericin during extraction could be minimized and the molecular weight of sericin was in the range of 10-400 kDa. Based on the result of time-resolved FTIR-ATR spectra, the crystallization of fibroin was retarded in the presence of urea-mercaptoethanol extracted sericin like as previously reported hot-water extracted sericin. The gelation time of fibroin was also delayed in the presence of sericin. Interestingly same delaying effect could be also observed when fibroin and sericin were immiscible. These results show that sericin might have more active role in the spinning process of silk fiber.
안구건조증 환자에서 실리콘 눈물점 마개 삽입 전후의 눈물막 및 안구표면 변화

Purpose: To evaluate the changes in tear film and the ocular surface before and after punctal occlusion by silicone punctal plug insertion in dry eye patients. Methods: Twenty-four eyes of 19 patients with dry eye were included. We performed corneal sensitivity test, tear film break-up time (BUT), basal tear secretion test (BST), fluorescein staining, tear clearance test (Tcr), and conjunctival impression cytology and then compared the measurements before and after punctal occlusion. Results: Before silicone pucntal plug insertion corneal sensitivity, BUT, BST, fluorescein staining score, and Tcr were: 52.50±6.55 mm, 4.47±1.33 sec, 4.07±1.86 mm, 4.74±3.21 and 3.83±1.62, respectively. The grade of conjunctival squamous metaplasia was 2.45±1.26, and goblet cell density was 131.82±125.53 cells/mm2 before punctal occlusion. After punctal plug insertion corneal sensitivity was 58.13±3.72 mm (p=0.015), BUT was 6.76±2.59 sec (p<0.01), BST was 5.57±3.32 mm (p=0.161), fluorescein staining score was 1.74±2.13 (p<0.01) and Tcr was 4.50±1.29 (p=0.198). The degree of conjunctival squamous metaplasia was 1.12±0.83 (p=0.019) and goblet cell density was 206.67±155.78 cells/mm2 (p=0.229) after punctal plug insertion. Conclusions: The tear films and ocular surface changes after punctal plug insertion in dry eye patients include increased corneal sensitivity, improved quality of tear films and decreased conjunctival squamous metaplasia.
건성안이 동반된 갑상샘안병증 환자에서 사이클로스포린 A 점안액 사용 후 눈물막과 안구표면의 변화

Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the changes of tear film and ocular surface after using cyclosporine A in patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy accompanied by dry eye. Methods: Corneal sensitivity test (CST), tear break-up time (BUT), basal tear secretion test (BST), fluorescein staining (FS), tear clearance rate (TCR), and conjunctival impression cytology were evaluated in 28eyes of 28 patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy accompanied by dry eye before and after using 0.1 cyclosporine A. Results: CST (P=0.03), BUT (P<0.01), and BST (P=0.01) were shown significant improvements after 3 month treatment with topical 0.1% cyclosporine A. There are also shown improvments of impression cytologic findings, reduction of the degree of conjunctival squamous cell metaplasia (P=0.02) and increment of the density of goblet cell (P=0.04) after 3 month treatment. But TCR and FS were shown no significant changes after treatment. Conclusions: The improvement of parameters of tear films and ocular surface suggest the treatment with 0.1% cyclosporine A for dry eye in thyroid ophthalmopathy was effective.

In modern livestock industry, the use of antibiotics in the diets was strictly prohibited. Currently many additives are studied and used as antibiotic substitutes. Among them, we reviewed the effects of supplement charcoal in monogastric livestock`s feed additives. Supplement charcoal in diets showed improvement of growth performance and improved immune response to mycotoxin. Moreover, in faeces of fattening pigs, charcoal reduced emission of noxious gases and faecal pH and fecal microflora. The use of charcoal as feed additives has a positive benefit on livestocks.

N/A Background : There were many strategies to treat postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Because of bone mass measurement confirms the existence of osteoporosis and also predicts the risk of fracture, the effectiveness of the treatment should be measured by the amount of increased bone mass. Methods : 311 postmenopausal Korean women were evaluated who visited one of university hospital located in Seoul from Aug. 1997 to July 2000, with respect to markers of bone turnover and BMD at lumbar spine. Subjects were classified into 3 groups, peri-menopause, early-menopause, and late-menopause by menopausal states. To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of treatment, we compared changes of BMD after 1-year of treatment and total drug costs for 1-year among 3 groups. And also to evaluated the cost-effectiveness between groups classified by WHO criteria, we also compared changes of BMD and total drug costs after 1-year. Results : Our results showed those findings: 1. The const-effectiveness was similar among 3 groups classified by the menopausal state. 2. Among three groups classified by bone density, osteopenia group showed significantly favorable cost-effectiveness score than normal or osteoporotic group.
