This paper presents a transfer capability enhancement process using VSC HVDC system which can control active power as well as reactive power. The transfer capability is constrained by stability like voltage stability as well as thermal rating of power system components. Transfer capability of the power system limited by these constraints may be enhanced by reactive power control ability and active power flow control ability of the VSC HVDC system. To enhance the transfer capability of the system using VSC HVDC, selection of the HVDC installation site is performed. In this work, power zones which consist of major power plants and their sinks are identified using power tracing and distribution factor. Alternative route of major AC transmission line in the power zone is identified as VSC HVDC system.

Visualization has a strong capability to manage and display a large volume of data. It makes system analysis more intuitive and helps an operator In monitoring system status, understanding its phenomena, identifying its problems, and performing corrective action to maintain the security of the system. In this paper visualization program is developed based on a COTS-based software development concept in a distributed environment using open-source application software and development tools.

This paper presents a HVDC site selection algorithm to increase transfer capability using VSC HVDC system which can control active power as well as reactive power. Using normal powerflow results and simple index k<SUB>r</SUB> the HVDC site selection algorithm is enhanced and more tightly-coupled transmission lines are identified in a domain of generators.

This paper presents a method for estimating distribution network topology based on a sliding window algorithm. As the grid connection of renewable energy sources increases, accurate network topology and line parameters have become very important information for precise system control and management in distribution systems. However, unlike the high-voltage system, the low-voltage distribution system has limited information on system parameters and topology. In this paper, a novel method to estimate network topology and line parameters using measurement data from smart meters such as AMI is proposed. The method determines network topology according to the change rate of the estimated line parameters for sequential data windows. The case study results demonstrate that the proposed topology estimation method outperforms existing methods based on Pearson"s correlation coefficient.
Effect of a large-scale wind farm on power system transient stability

Wind power is one of the fastest growing distributed generation types. As part of a worldwide trend, the concerns of large wind generation have been risen rather than small wind generation since it influences the whole power system including the transient stability. The objective of this paper is to understand the effect of a large-scale wind generation on power system transient stability and to develop a systematic procedure to assess the effect according to the location and capacity of a wind farm. In the proposed procedure, an index is presented to evaluate the appropriateness of the location and capacity of a wind farm for transient stability contingencies.
