In a rapidly developing society, people's demand for daily necessities, especially furniture, constantly upgrades, bringing new challenges to design practice. One significant reason for these changes is the emergence and growth of children in the family environment. At the same time, the spatial and structural dimensions of the family environment are also constantly shrinking. Despite these realities, existing designs of "soban"-a traditional type of Korean furniture-often fail to fully consider the impact of these lifestyle changes, rendering them unsuitable for modern needs. This study adopts a user-centered approach to explore how changes in children's lifestyles affect the design of "soban." A mixed-methods research design was employed, combining qualitative and quantitative methods to collect data from different perspectives. The study's main results indicate that changes in children's lifestyles significantly impact the functionality, comfort, and aesthetics of "soban". In addition, this study found that consumers prefer easy-to-use and disposable assembly furniture, which is related to the decreasing presence of traditional high-priced Korean furniture in the market. This research emphasizes the importance of considering the constantly changing family structure and lifestyle (especially children's family structure and lifestyle) in the design process by exploring user-centered furniture design. It provides valuable insights and novel methods to help furniture designers adapt to the ever-changing consumer demands and social changes.

Furniture design transcends mere functionality and aesthetics; it should also respond and adapt to the diversity of family lifestyles. As family structures evolve and children progress through different stages of growth, the lifestyles and needs of family members undergo significant changes, profoundly influencing the requirements and trends in furniture design. However, current market offerings often fail to adequately consider the unique functional and safety needs of children at various developmental stages, somewhat limiting innovation and practicality in furniture design. This study aims to delve into the lifestyle behavioral changes of children from infancy to adolescence and how these changes prompt a more humane and adaptive direction in furniture design. Through multi-stage behavioral analysis and case studies, this research reveals the impact of children's needs at different ages on furniture design and how innovative design can meet these needs while achieving long-term use and environmental sustainability. The findings suggest that innovating furniture design to cater to age-specific needs (such as adjustability, multifunctionality, durability, and safety) is not only feasible but necessary. Moreover, this study proposes a series of flexible design strategies aimed at meeting long-term family needs while considering environmental protection and economic benefits. These strategies enable furniture design to better adapt to changes in family life and, to some extent, promote sustainable development in the furniture industry, offering valuable insights for future innovation and practice in furniture design.
Chinese Apartment Housing Planning Considering the Expanding Family's Living Culture
이정정,노신엽,오디,저성양,최경란 한국전시산업융합연구원 2023 한국과학예술융합학회 Vol.41 No.4
In the process of urbanization development in China, apartment housing constructed to accommodate the rapid expansion of urban populations has been characterized by uniformity. However, with economic growth and an improvement in quality of life, residents' demands for the quality and personalization of housing have been steadily increasing. The functions and features of these residences need to be redefined. Against the backdrop of changing birth policies and diverse lifestyles in contemporary China, the standardized spatial planning in apartment buildings fails to reflect the individual living characteristics and needs of residents. Therefore, this study focuses on the most common apartments found in Chinese cities and aims to establish spatial planning that takes into consideration the living characteristics of residents based on the family life cycle. Based on this, the paper adopts a user-centered video ethnography approach to investigate the living behaviors of families during three stages: early childhood, primary school, and adolescence, within the context of family expansion. Firstly, user space usage patterns and psychological spatial needs during the family expansion phase are derived through spatial on-site surveys and user interviews. Subsequently, video footage capturing the activities of sampled families 24/7 is collected. User living behaviors are then encoded, and the coding of user behaviors in the videos is inputted into the Observer XT program. This process helps extract user preferences for living behaviors, spatial usage requirements, and user demand characteristics considering the family life cycle stages. Finally, the study summarizes these user demands and presents key elements for future apartment housing spatial design planning.
