Vol.0 No.39

This paper offers a survey of current trends in Victorian literary studies in North America against what is known among South Korean scholars as “independent reading” of foreign literature. After analyzing the topics that have appeared in the North American Victorian Studies Association annual conferences as well as in the articles of Victorian Studies and Victorian Literature and Culture between 2009 and 2015, the paper identifies transatlanticism as the theme that arguably makes the most frequent appearance in all three venues. While the transatlantic viewpoint many North American scholars maintain stands at variance with the nationalistic approach of mainstream Korean scholars, the paper negotiates the possibility of viably “receiving” the transatlantic viewpoint of the North American academy whose blurring of boundaries between Victorian Britain and Korea might yield unexpected (and productive) insights that will enrich our understanding of both cultures.

“You are vindicating your own better sense”:Superstition and Literary Imagination in Armadale

Vol.19 No.1

This paper argues that Armadale’s apparent affirmation of Christian doctrines through its representation of the protagonist Ozias Midwinter’s renunciation of his superstitious belief in fate reflects less an embracement of Victorian social norms than a strategic demonstration of the positive agency of superstition. The novel’s initial association of the mixed-race Midwinter’s foreign looks with his superstitious nature actually questions the supposed negativity of the connection by reinterpreting superstition as a meaningful faculty. Specifically, Armadale represents superstition as a sensitive play of imagination—”the noblest of the human faculties”—and continually validates its agency. The novel demonstrates how superstition can be productively understood as a critical component of literary imagination: Midwinter’s superstitious interpretations of the causality between the key events of the novel (most of which hit the mark) illustrate “literary” imagination that both inform the novel’s plot and anticipate the protagonist’s successful literary career. The correspondence creates a sensation that invites the readers to put their own imagination into play, thereby conducing toward drawing the readers themselves into a superstitious frame of mind. Moreover, the paper argues that such operation of Midwinter’s superstition mirrors the proceedings of Collins’s own literary imagination during the novel’s serialization in Cornhill Magazine. As the novel’s endorsement of the agency of superstition informs the writings of both its protagonist and its author, it reflects the latter’s belief in the sensation novel as an essential literary form in Victorian culture. Furthermore, it complicates the boundary between Christian and superstitious beliefs by showing how the former is pre-conditioned by the latter.

Gender Irony in “The Mystery of Marie Rogêt”

Vol.55 No.2

This essay explores how Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Mystery of Marie Rogêt” (1842) questions the conventional gender binary in nineteenth- century America by representing its protagonist C. Auguste Dupin as a non-masculine figure. To make its point, however, the novel ends up relying on the very gender binary it questions. The irony that arises from the novel’s endorsement of the racialized gender dichotomy between a white female victim (Marie Rogêt) and a white male detective (Dupin) renders the latter incapable of demonstrating an impeccable example of ratiocination he has confidently set out to achieve by analyzing the documents about Marie Rogêt’s death.

Vol.21 No.1

The advancement of autonomous driving technology has heightened the importance of AutonomousMobile Robotics (AMR) within smart factories. Notably, in tasks involving the transportation of heavy objects, theconsideration of weight in route optimization and path planning has become crucial. There is ongoing research onlocal path planning, such as Dijkstra, A*, and RRT*, focusing on minimizing travel time and distance within smartfactory warehouses. Additionally, there are ongoing simultaneous studies on route optimization, including TSPalgorithms for various path explorations and on minimizing energy consumption in mobile robotics operations. However, previous studies have often overlooked the weight of the objects being transported, emphasizing onlyminimal travel time or distance. Therefore, this research proposes route planning that accounts for the maximumpayload capacity of mobile robotics and offers load-optimized path planning for multi-destination transportation. Considering the load, a genetic algorithm with the objectives of minimizing both travel time and distance, as wellas energy consumption is employed. This approach is expected to enhance the efficiency of mobility within smartfactories.

Vol.20 No.3

This essay offers a case study of teaching Herman Melville’s Benito Cereno in a university classroom. Drawing on Hegel’s Master-Slave Discourse as a frame of analysis, the essay close-reads three fictional and “unnecessary” scenes in Benito Cereno—the Atufal chain charade, the shaving scene, and Babo’s leap from the San Dominick—that mark the novella’s departure from Amasa Delano’s original narrative. By close-reading these scenes, the students came to understand the nature of Babo’s desire for recognition that vanquishes his desire for freedom. Further discussion led to the conclusion that Benito Cereno, instead of conceiving slavery as a racial issue, represents it as a condition. The real problem of slavery lies in the fact that it pulls the slave as well as the master into its dynamics.

Vol.43 No.2

This paper examines the benefits of teaching The Adventures of Wu Han of Korea in secondary education in Korea. The novel is a rare sample of twentieth-century American fiction that features a Korean protagonist. What is notable in this novel is that its major Korean characters seem to share the mindset of their American author and creator and represent the Western perspective in their discourse of Korean/Eastern idea and culture. The novel is packed with Orientalist attitudes and could be taught as a case study of Orientalism. Teachers can also use the novel to teach students the art of close reading by analyzing selected scenes from the text.
