The main objectives of this study are to obtain the fatigue test data and investigate the influence of the plates thickness. Two types of specimens with plate thicknesses of 90, 75 and 100 mm are used to examine the influence of plate thickness on the fatigue behavior of welded steel plates. All types of fatigue specimens are tested to evaluate the fatigue strength of structural welding details often used in a steel bridge such as a butt-welded member and lateral attachment to the flange with constant amplitude sinusoidal loading under axial-tension in air, which were fabricated by manual gas weld. Results of the test show that all of the specimens satisfied with the fatigue strength corresponding to their fatigue design category, which means there seems to be no problem using the thick-plate in a real steel bridge. However, most fractured specimens showed brittle failure(rapid crack growth) after a crack is developed. Countermeasures against this phenomena are needed. And through the inspection of cracked surfaces, we found that manual CO₂ welds applied in this experiment could be one of the reasons for brittle failure in the welding zone.
Longitudinally Profiled Plate 을 이용한 강교량 설계 효율성

Application of Longitudinally profiled plates which have the property of variable thickness over the length should be more efficient about bending moment of steel structure member than conventional plates, and decrease of welding joints. Research on LP plates has been developed in Europe and Japan, and also has been adapted to steel bridges. Recently, POSCO also developed LP plate and investigated the problem in fabrication. The main objective of this study is to find out the applicability of the LP plate to steel bridges. I-shaped section plate girder(8+8=16m length, 21 to 34㎜(1.857㎜/m) 2-LP plate girders) was tested to get strain and displacement data. Using the FEM, compared these data with girders of 34㎜, 27.5㎜ thickness over the full length and of 4 step thickness in flange. Result of this study, 21-34㎜ thickness LP plate girder decrease 9.2% of weight and reduce of welding to the 34㎜ full length. And using plates less than 40㎜ thickness, the conventional method can be also used to design for LP plate girder bridges.
