Novel sulfonated poly(arylene ether) membranes with triazole introduced monomer (SPAE-TM) were synthesized via conventional aromatic condensation reaction. The TM was prepared through “click reaction” with high yield and used as proton transfer moiety to increase proton conductivity of polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs). To compare chemical, mechanical and thermal stabilities of non crosslinked polymer electrolyte membranes (SPAE-TM10, SPAE-TM20), crosslinked membranes were prepared by thermal crosslinking method (cSPAE-TM10, cSPAE-TM20). The SPAE-TM membranes exhibited excellent thermal stability (Tg = ca. 250°C). The proton conductivities of all membranes were sufficiently high in a wide range of temperatures. The water uptake and swelling ratio of SPAE-TM membranes were successfully suppressed in comparison with SPAE-TM0 membrane.

A 19-year-old woman presented with an asymptomatic cutaneous discoloration on her nape. Dermatological examination revealed localized dark brown to dark pigmented velvety macules and patches. She denied a past medical history, except for a 7-kg weight gain over a 6-months period. Histopathologically, the specimen showed hyperkeratosis, epidermal hyperplasia, mild acanthosis, and papillomatosis. In addition, keratin material and fungal spore were noted between the papilloma ridges. Periodic acid-Schiff special stain showed a positive result for the fungal spore in the horny layer. She was treated with a daily oral dose of terbinafine and topical flutrimazole. After 12 weeks of treatment, she is currently under observation without pigmentation and adverse effect. We considered the initial diagnosis as acanthosis nigricans because of weight gain, similar clinical features, and histological findings. However, the final diagnosis was hyperkeratotic head and neck Malassezia dermatosis considering the presence of yeast and the dramatic improvement after antifungal treatment. To the best of our knowledge, hyperkeratotic head and neck Malassezia dermatosis is not well characterized in the literature. It is an unusual variant of pityriasis versicolor. The skin lesion appears brown to dark, scaly, and hyperkeratotic macules and patches located on the face and neck. Here, we reported an unusual case of hyperkeratotic head and neck Malassezia dermatosis.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a unique head and neck malignant tumor in terms of epidemiology, pathology, and prognosis. It has been demonstrated that the pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma is associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). A 52-year-old man was referred for a solitary erythematous patch on the left cheek. The biopsy specimen showed nasopharyngeal carcinoma with positive EBV RNA stain. The incidence of cutaneous metastasis is rare. When skin metastasis develops, it suggests a progressive state of the disease, although it is common for distant metastasis to occur at other sites. Herein, we describe our experience with an uncommon case of nasopharyngeal carcinoma presenting cutaneous metastasis. (Korean J Dermatol 2019;57(2):80∼83)
Conductive and Stable Crosslinked Anion Exchange Membranes Based on Poly(arylene ether sulfone)

Highly conductive and stable anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are important components of high-performance anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Here, we report the use of crosslinked poly(arylene ether sulfone) (PAES) AEMs containing quaternary ammonium (QA) and triazolium cations. The crosslinked PAEStriazole- hydroxide membrane (cPAES-TA-OH) had a higher ion exchange capacity (IEC) than that of the non-crosslinked membrane (PAES-TA-OH) owing to the presence of triazolium cations. The IEC values of cPAES-TA-OH and PAES-TA-OH were 1.75 and 1.31 meq/g, respectively. The IEC value affects the water uptake and swelling ratio of a membrane. The water uptake and swelling ratio of cPAES-TA-OH were higher than those of PAES-TA-OH at 30 °C and 80 °C. In addition, hydroxide conductivity and membrane stability were enhanced by crosslinking; the hydroxide conductivity of cPAES-TA-OH was 92.1 mS/cm at 80 °C under 95% RH (in contrast to 86.2 mS/cm for PAES-TA-OH), and its conductivity retention was 67% after treating with 1M NaOH at 80 °C for 24 h (in contrast to 51% for PAES-TA-OH).
Dermatitis Artefacta with Superficial Fungal Infection: a Case Report

A 76-year-old female presented with a 2-month history of skin lesions on both her buttocks. The skin lesions showed diffuse, erythematous scattered papules and macules with brown to black crusts. The patient believed that she had skin cancer and that the lesions had to be scrapped. She thus soaked her buttock in sikhye, a traditional Korean beverage, to treat the lesions. Based on patient history, she was diagnosed with dermatitis artefacta at the initial hospital visit. KOH examination was positive for hyphae and fungal cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. She was treated with oral and topical antifungal agents for 6 months. The skin lesions improved at that time; however, she continued to scratch her buttock, and the skin lesions aggravated. Repeat fungal culture of the lesions revealed Candida glabrata, which was confirmed by genetic polymerase chain reaction sequencing. Consequently, she was treated with antifungal agents for 6 months. S. cerevisiae is widely used in baking, brewing, wine making, and biotechnology. S. cerevisiae and C. glabrata are considered relatively non-pathogenic fungal organisms. Here, we report a rare case of dermatitis artefacta combined with superficial infection of non-pathogenic fungal organism.
