본 연구는 모래 놀이가 유아의 어휘력과 정서지능에 미치는 영향을 살펴봄으로써 유아교육현장에서 모래 놀이를 활성화하는데 연구의 의의가 있다. 본 연구의 대상은 경남 C시와 J시에 소재한 유치원의 만4세 유아 41명이며 실험집단이 21명, 통제집단은 20명으로 구성되었다. 실험처치기간은 9주간이며 실험집단은 1주에 2회 총18회의 모래 놀이를 구성하여 실외놀이시간에 실시하였으며 통제집단은 실외 놀이시간에 다른 놀이기구를 이용한 놀이나 산책을 실시하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 14.0프로그램을 이용하여 두 집단 간의 사전·사후 t검증과 사전점수를 공변인으로 하는 공변량분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 실험집단 유아의 어휘력이 통제집단 유아의 어휘력보다 통계적으로 유의하게 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 실험집단 유아와 통제집단 유아 간의 정서지능전체는 유의한 차이가 없었지만 하위영역인 감정이입에서는 실험집단이 통제집단보다 유의하게 높게 나타났다. 즉 모래 놀이는 유아의 어휘력과 정서지능에 유의한 영향을 주었다고 할 수 있다. This study investigates the effects of sandbox play on infant vocabulary and emotional intelligence in order to promote it in infant care education. The study subjects were 41 infants from kindergartens in cities C and J in the province of Kyungsang-namdo, with 21 in the treatment group and 20 in the control group. The experiment lasted for 9 weeks, with babies in the treatment group being exposed to sandbox play during outdoor playtime twice a week, 18 times in total. Meanwhile, those in the control group were engaged in activities with different toys and rides, or were sent for a walk during the outdoor play. The collected data were analyzed using the software program Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), Version 14.0 to run pre- and post-hoc t-tests for the differences between the groups, as well as covariate analysis using the pre-score as a covariate. As a result, the treatment group’s vocabulary was statistically significantly higher than that of the control group. While there was no statistically significant difference in overall emotional intelligence between the two groups, the treatment group had a statistically significantly higher score in one of the sub-topics (i.e., empathy) as compared to the control group. These findings suggest that sandbox play has a considerable influence on infants’ vocabulary and emotional intelligence.
