Vol.8 No.3

This study aims to make a classification of semi-residential zones based on its spacial characteristics criteria and to analyses the factors which affect FAR in practice by zones. To do this, each plot of semi-residential zones in Seoul city were classified under 3 heads using building, plot and location feature. Factors which are influencing FAR in practice of each zones were tested by multiple regression analysis. The result shows that the factors which have affected on the FAR in practice by zones have changed according to spacial characteristics criteria. Finally, the differences of characteristic in each semi-residential area had resulted in the factors which affected the differences between FAR in practice and the ratio of commercial area. With these results of analysis, we are able to suggest that it needed to establish various FAR regulation system which reflected the characteristic of the each zones. It means that the management of semi-residential area has some limitations for achieving the goal of land use planning in Seoul metropolitan city.

Vol.53 No.3

Kyung Seok Shim (Soonchunhyang U)The Korean war fictions are distinguished with the soldiers’ attitude towardthe Korean war which is quite different from the past wars. Being indiffer-ent to ideology, they cannot find any meaning of participating in the war. Theyare just concerned with their own survival and vent their anger toward thepeople back in the state that never seem to care about their sufferings. Thenovels reveal that the soldiers accept the reality of the war and are not repul-sive toward the military and its system. However, they do show ambivalencetoward the traditional belief that God is on our side and comradery is amongthem. In particular, some POW novels, the unique sub-genre of Korean warliterature, subvert the myth of comradery and the spirit of Semper Fi amongthe soldiers. With the juxtaposition of prison life and their past life in theState, they betray the political and social oppression that afflict an individualin the American society. The novels are also saturated with the soldiers’ racistic and sexist attitudetoward the Koreans, which foreshadow Vietnam war literature. They regardKorea as a second rate and unworthy place to fight for and die for. Their atti-tudes are condensed into the word, “gook” and indeed, Koreans are consideredas subhuman beings. The soldiers are very suspicious of Korean people includ-ing the KATUSA and show strong contempt toward South Korean soldiers. They are cognizant of Korean’s critical view of themselves, yet. Remarkably, the ethnic writers are more perceptive and sympathetic toward Koreans. Theyagree that the soldiers’ complaints are rooted in the racism.

Vol.7 No.2

This paper explores class issues in two popular films, Titanic and Pretty Woman as an example of how to deal with narrative from a Marxian perspective. The films, focusing on cross-class romance, reveal that class is not simply a matter of money, but also related to other things such as race and moral strength; middle class life and values are the invisible norm and both the upper and low class are found to be lacking. Hollywood films avoid depicting class warfare in positive ways and when this does happen, it is set in the past and often involves notions of progress from the imperfect class structure of the past toward the idealized system of the present. This is true of Titanic and Pretty Woman. Even though Titanic is criticized as leftist propaganda intended to trigger class consciousness and resistance, the film displaces notions of justifiable class conflicts and change into the past. Further, it reveals that class differences are un-American while validating the American Dream. Pretty Woman touches on the everyday struggle that lower class prostitutes have to face. But it soon suppresses this theme and provides a fantasy that romantic love can resolve the gap between classes. Both films imply that the class struggle is un-American and temporary. They also openly acknowledge the privilege of wealth but simultaneously suggest that wealth could threaten the characters’ happiness. Indeed, Hollywood films argue that all challenges to the class structure are undesirable.

Vol.5 No.1

This paper examines Robert Altman's strategy of integrating Raymond Carver's different short stories and a poem into his art film, Short Cuts. Carver's characters indeed experience insecurity, guilt, non-communication, alienation and isolation in each respective story. They are marginal people who are entrapped in painful situations. Altman understands the spirit of Carver's stories and successfully integrates the seemingly unrelated narratives into one work. As is indicated in the title of the film, the viewers are taken from here to there in the L. A. area quickly by rapid cutting and montage. The “selection of short cuts” is grounded in Carver's poem “Lemonade,” which emphasizes the arbitrary nature of luck in the scheme of things, and the characters are interwoven in the proliferating networks of human interactions. At the beginning, the film connects the characters with the fleet of helicopters spraying anti-medfly insecticide, while the final scene ends with the earthquake. Both incidents touching every character suggest a web of psychological and sociological relationships. Altman's other strategy uses the songs of the jazz singer Tess, in particular the recurring “Prisoners of Life” that provides the whole narrative with a choric effect. Indeed, the song comments consistently and poignantly on the characters' painful anguish in life, strongly paralleling Carver's theme. The cries of pain emerge throughout the film in such various guises as suicides, aggressive acts, inappropriate actions, expressions of repressed sexual anger. In addition, the water and fish are also crucial to connecting the multiple threads of the different lives and situations. Indeed, such strategies of integration enable the successful union of different situations and different plots and subsequently give the viewer a sense of common context.

VIBRATION PATH ANALYSIS AND OPTIMAL DESIGN OF THE SUSPENSION FOR BRAKE JUDDER REDUCTION

2013 International journal of automotive technology Vol.14 No.4

Brake judder is abnormal vibration, which is mainly generated by uneven contact between the brake disc and pad. The abnormal vibration from BTV (Brake Torque Variation) is transferred to the suspension and the steering system during braking. In this paper, judder simulation is carried out using a multi-body dynamic analysis program to analyze the relationship between judder and the transfer mechanism, which consists of the suspension and the steering system. In order to verify the analytical model, test results are compared with the simulation results. A sensitivity analysis is also carried out. In addition, an optimization method is presented for judder reduction, using the design of experiments.

Study of the active radial steering of a railway vehicle using the curvature measuring method

2014 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.28 No.11

This study assesses the capability of an active steering bogie to run effectively on a curved track. It presents a curvature measuringmethod that can be implemented in a railway vehicle system to steer a railway vehicle. This method was used to conduct a field test. Theangle of attack and lateral force were reduced in a railway vehicle model on a curved track and analyzed. An active steering system wasimplemented to improve certain states when a railway vehicle runs on this track, such as wear and derailment index. The railway vehiclewas also equipped with an active steering bogie to limit lateral contact forces and wear rates between the wheel and the rail. Finally, thispaper describes the modeling of this active steering system and of a system to control the performance of a vehicle as it curves. Simulationresults with this bogie were better than those obtained with a conventional railway vehicle, including in terms of lateral forces andthe wear number of the wheels. Therefore, the proposed model is more effective than conventional systems with respect to operation on acurved track.
