Vol.0 No.1

The purpose of this paper is to interpret the ‘army first policy’ of North Korea from a cultural point of view. The army first policy has been rooted in the nationalideology of Juche philosophy. Juche has varied depending on the historical context. For example, Juche thought is an anti-imperialism ideology for 1950~1960s, developed as a form of humanist philosophy for 1970~1980s, and becomes North Korea’s State Religion for 1990~2000s. The army first policy has been a result of the practical application of Juche thought. The historical root of the policy is traced back to the ancient Koguryo period and Kim Il-song’s anti-Japanese battle. The army first policy has some particular cultural conditions which make it possible-contextual development and application of Juche, rule of Kim Il-song’s will, red flag ideology, and family patriotism. According to North Korea, the army first policy is a mode of political culture that has been created in the practical struggle of waging the socialist revolution in an authentic North Korean way guided by the Juche thought. Kim Jong-il has emphasized the importance of the armed forces as the pillar of the revolution, giving top priority to strengthening defence capabilities for the survival of the nation. The core idea of the army first policy is that the army is the party, the state, and the people. This relational view of the policy places the army at the center of everything in that it functions the decisive role in shaping their own destiny. However, the fundamental purpose of the policy is not to build up the aggressive army itself threatening the neighbor countries but to construct the great nation of Korea in defending the nation from the powerful countries. With a new international order of the ‘cold peace’, North Korea will continue to enhance the intimate unity of the army and the people in order to safeguard the people’s sovereignty and interests that lay out the foundation of creating the future of the great nation.

The Spirituality of Korean Shamanism: Peace and Coexistence

Vol.10 No.2

The main idea of this paper is to discuss the spiritual aspects of the shamanic festivals expounding the Korean concept of peace and coexistence that are being integrated with the colorful rituals and unique cultural presentations. The shamanic festivals and rituals symbolize the spirituality of inter-relatedness that asserts balance to the concept of time and history as moving forward to the fulfillment of the cosmic peace. I have sought to describe coexistence as a perfect state of peace and evolving human mind is the expression of relational beings that embrace the whole and all its parts in a qualitative sense. The shamanic spirituality of peace can be understood as an emergent process with a radically relational form of coexistence in which individual creatures have their own integrity and a world that is evolving in time at every level. The shamanic spirituality of peace can be thought of as coexistence that constantly creates spiritual and ethical space in the shared dynamic life to be in the process of becoming towards the attainment of the perfect state of peace at every level of existence. The shamanic spirituality of peace underlies the co-existential relationships which constantly involve all those interactions and connections that incorporate components into a more complex whole and relate that complex whole into another level of unity. This process of creating a new sublimed level of unity is an essential principle of the shamanic spirituality of peace: towards ‘to-be-in coexistence’ and ‘to-be-in relationships.’

Vol.11 No.2

A conflict of interest is usually defined as a set of circumstances that creates a risk that professional judgments or actions regarding a primary interest will be unduly influenced by a secondary interest. In general, a conflict of interest can be classified as either a financial or a non-financial one. A financial conflict of interest reportedly occurs frequently in medical (and psychiatric) research and practice and is associated with a greater likelihood of reporting results favorable to the intervention being studied. A non-financial conflict of interest may occur in psychiatric research and practice as a result of the so-called "allegiance effect." It is very important that clinicians and researchers in the field of psychiatry be aware that their field is vulnerable to both financial and non-financial conflicts of interest. Considering that it is impossible in modern psychiatry to be completely free from possible conflicts of interest, the best way to manage a conflict of interest is disclosure based on the principles of transparency. Actions that might lead to conflicts of interest should be avoided as much as possible.

      • Life Philosophy and Juche Organism of North Korea

Vol.7 No.2

This paper examines the socio-political life in relation to the organic culture of North Korea. Juche thought has its origins in Marxism, but it has evolved into the elaborate indigenous national religion of North Korea. Although the average North Korean would of course not think of Juche thought as a religion, it does include a god-like figure, Kim Ilsŏng, who is worshipped by approximately twenty-three million adherents in North Korea. They believe in him as “Father,” in the sense of being the national provider, healer, and even savior. Juche is thus no longer a merely political ideology but has become the national religion of North Korea. Kim Ilsŏng (1912-1994) created the Juche idea of self-reliance in order to emphasize the importance of developing the nation’s potential using its own resources and reserves of human creativity. For him, the people’s primary requirement was establish the Juche idea in order to achieve sovereignty (chajusŏng) and he made Juche ideology the guiding principle for all the actions of the Workers’ Party. Although the interpretation and application of Juche thought have varied depending on the historical context, the core idea of Juche is based on a “human-centered view on the world.” The emphases on Juche may have changed over the years, but the basic concepts that sustain the North Korean people remain: the commitment to socialism, an insistence on achieving economic self-sufficiency, the cult of personality surrounding the leader, and political and moral sovereignty. All these ideas are woven together in the cultural framework of the socio-political life of the Juche organism. First, in both males and females, family strength increased with increasing monthly income, satisfaction with communication with spouse, and intimacy with adolescent children. Second, family strength increased with decreasing work and family conflict only for females. Third, the variable with the greatest impact on family strength was communication satisfaction with spouse for males and monthly income for females. These results show that monthly income, work and family conflict, communication satisfaction with spouse, and intimacy with adolescent children are major variables that affect family strength.
