Symbolic Connotation of Birds and Water in Yeats
신원경 한국예이츠학회 2023 한국예이츠 저널 Vol.71 No.-
A good knowledge of all kinds of legends, folk tales, and mythologies and extensive reading of Platonism, Neo-Platonism, Druidism, and many other philosophies were strongly imprinted on Yeats’s thoughts. He questioned radical human issues on life and death, and both in plays and poetry he symbolically expressed his philosophical beliefs in life after death, reincarnation, and the Platonic “world of ideas.” Water and birds are symbolic devices he often uses for these themes. Birds mostly take a symbolic connotation of disembodied souls and the sea is in most cases a background through which the souls pass to reach the perpetual world of ideas that transcends ephemerality of the material world. It is noteworthy that among many works of Yeats, The Shadowy Waters and “Sailing to Byzantium” well incorporated such philosophical convictions. The human souls, escaping from the natural world, pursue true happiness and dream of the eternal “world of ideas.”
Vol.17 No.3
In this study, we tried to improve the cycling performance of lithium-ion batteries by suppressing decomposition of the electrolyte solution containing fluorsilane-based additive. Trifluoropropyltrimethoxysilane was electrochemically oxidized and reduced prior to the decomposition of the liquid electrolyte composed of lithium salt and carbonate-based organic solvent. Thus, the stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on both negative electrode and positive electrode was formed, and it was confirmed that the cycling performance of lithium-ion batteries assembled with electrolyte solution containing 5 wt.% trifluoropropyltrimethoxysilane was the mostly enhanced. The products formed on electrodes were analyzed by the SEM and XPS analysis, and it was demonstrated that trifluoropropyltrimethoxysilane can be one of the promising SEI-forming additives.
Meaning of Flowers in Robert Frost’s Poetry
신원경 한국현대영미시학회 2009 현대영미시연구 Vol.15 No.1
This paper investigates the imagery of flowers in Frost’s poetry. The flower is an important poetic character in his nature poetry. The symbolic imagery reflects men’s consciousness and intrinsic attributes. First, in “The Tuft of Flowers” and “Flower Gathering,” flower imagery reminds the speaker of his relation with other people. Such imagery links two people firmly, turning the speaker’s mind to his social world. Second, flowers symbolize feminine sexuality in some of Frost’s poems such as “The Subverted Flower,” “The Telephone,” and “Wind and Window Flower”; sexual image of flowers evokes love toward a woman. Finally, flowers symbolize human mutability. Poems with such imagery include “A Boundless Moment,” “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” and “The Quest of the Purple-Fringed” among others; They reflect Frost’s personal tragedies and his philosophy on human nature. Flower imagery tends to change throughout Frost’s life, reflecting his change in consciousness and attitude towards life, expressing diverse aspects of human nature. Exploring Neoplatonism in the Poetry of W. B. Yeats
신원경 신영어영문학회 2023 신영어영문학 Vol.86 No.-
This paper explores the profound influence of Neoplatonism on the literary works of the Irish poet, W. B. Yeats. While existing scholarship has explored Yeats's engagement with mysticism and spiritualism, this study specifically examines the manner in which Neoplatonic philosophy permeates his poetry, shedding light on its impact on his artistic and metaphysical perspectives. Yeats's exploration of Neoplatonism and esoteric traditions was influenced by the intellectual and spiritual atmosphere of his time, and his readings, spanning various philosophical sources, prominently featured the works of Plato and Plotinus. Yeats's Neoplatonism undergoes a noteworthy evolution, progressing from its nascent beginnings in his early poetry to its mature and intricate expression in his later works. This transformation highlights the enduring impact of Neoplatonic ideas on his literary journey, thus illustrating the profound influence of spiritual exploration on his artistic development.
The Meaning of Nature in Robert Frost’s Poetry
신원경 한국영미어문학회 2015 영미어문학 Vol.- No.116
This study aims to examine the particular meaning of nature in Robert Frost’s poetry. Frost is usually considered a nature poet or a farmer poet because he lived as a farmer and nature significantly influenced his poetry. However, his view on nature is different from other nature poets’. To him, nature is not a romantic subject and it is not an object to admire, either. In some of his poetry, nature, being unfavorable and even threatening to men, is the place where people struggle for existence. This paper, studying some of Frost’s poems such as “Storm Fear,” “Lodged,” “The Last Word of a Bluebird” and “Out, Out―,” examines the meaning of nature in his poetry. In many of his poems, Frost does not feel unity with nature as it neither inspires man nor gives him peace. In some of his poems nature exists as a menace to man’s survival and the poet metaphorically describes human nature. Frost believes that real nature poetry does not describe nature itself, but portrays human beings in nature. So, Frost’s nature poetry is full of insights and deep understanding of man and life.
Hanrahan: Yeats’s Creative Persona in His Writings
신원경 한국현대영어영문학회 2024 현대영어영문학 Vol.68 No.3
This study explores the character of Hanrahan in the works of W.B. Yeats, focusing on the significant role of Hanrahan as a persona or mask that defines the poet. It is quite plausible that Yeats expressed his various emotions and desires through Hanrahan, given the poet’s situation and emotions at the time of writing. Through a detailed analysis of Hanrahan’s role across Yeats’s works, this study highlights the character’s significance, extending to the broader themes of transcendence and immortality. Hanrahan, who evolves throughout Yeats’s literary career, serves as a conduit for the poet’s thoughts, emotions, and philosophical reflections, intertwined with mystical and mythological motifs. The use of Hanrahan as a persona symbolizing the poet himself conveys deeper insights into Yeats’s philosophy and thoughts.

신원경 한국문화융합학회 2023 문화와 융합 Vol.45 No.11
Based on Deleuze's film image theory, this paper analyzes Michelangelo Antonioni's film "Red Desert" and analyzes the independent style of frame, short, and montage used by Antonioni in the film "Red Desert". The image in the frame is regarded as a readable symbol and the meanings are read to enhance the aesthetic style. The appearance of time-image through static shorts and fragmented montage is considered. Deleuze directs ‘any-space-whatever’ with Antonioni's characteristic film image. These elements of his film are defined as the characteristics of modern films that presuppose the emergence of time-image. By studying the narrative method of the film “Red Desert” and the meaning of the film language, renew the interpretation of the existing film and enhance the aesthetic position of the film.
