This article focuses on analysis of 11 storytelling samples produced by Korean adult test-takers of an English speaking proficiency test. The process of telling stories, hearing the stories, and retelling them is a commonly used way of communication with others not only in a classroom but also in everyday life, and moreover storytelling is a task often used in English speaking proficiency tests. Although it is surely an important part of our lives as mentioned above, there has not been much research on structure and characteristics of storytelling and its value in English language education. It should be discussed in public that what storytelling can do for English education in Korea, more specifically in teaching English speaking. This study provides what cyclical structure of storytelling is and what it means to English language education in Korea. It is illustrated that storytelling task samples of advanced learners of English can be well understood from the framework of storytelling components (Bidell, Hubbard, & Weaver, 1997).
Vol.11 No.2
This paper begins with an incident in which the UN announced language as a key element in achieving the next 15 years of SDG (Sustainable Development Goals). Announced in September 2015 at the United Nations, for example, the 17 goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development targeted various fields from education to technology to preserve the environment and bring economic growth. In order to find how language can practically work as a tool for sustainable development, however, in-depth theoretical and empirical research needs to be explored. In this study, the previous literature was researched firstly on `sustainable development`, and secondly on the related `appropriate technology/ pedagogy`. Then ecological approaches of language education were suggested to provide a theoretical basis for the sustainable development and appropriate language pedagogy. In an ecological model, language education is seen as a process which is part of and closely interrelated with a large range of natural and cultural ecological factors. It can be focused on the question of maintaining a diversity of language by seeking to identify those ecological factors that keep sustainable development and appropriate pedagogy. It was also discussed how ecological language models differ from conventional approaches to language education. Possible areas of further research was also discussed.

The purpose of this study is to develop a curriculum-based assessment (CBA) of young learners in an English education program. CBA contributes to the effectiveness of instruction, and it is a vehicle for using students" performance data to make decisions about individually appropriate decision. From the perspectives of the CBA, this study reviews Norwegian EVAluaion of English in Schools (EVA) Project to explore how Norwegian EVA Project team applied a local curriculum to the assessment process for young learners. This study describes the procedures for developing a placement test of English, which is based on a local curriculum for young learners: how assessment tasks are developed, how students are assessed and are placed. The performance of 71 low-level young learners on a written part of the placement test was multiply rated and analyzed using Rasch modelled FACETS program. It was found that the placement test mostly met the practical and theoretical consideration in CBA. In this study, the CBA to be locally developed for level placement purposes successfully diagnosed what it tried to assess.

The purpose of this study is to analyze two newspapers’ (Chosun Ilbo and Donga Ilbo) articles on ‘TOEFL Crisis’ from the viewpoint of critical discourse analysis. All the related articles, most of which appeared in 2007, were collected over the Internet Newspaper archives. The discourse event of ‘TOEFL Crisis’ and its social practice were discussed from the dimensions of textual, discourse, and social practice (Fairclough, 2001, 2005). It was found that the crisis discourse was formulated in terms of market principles and social utilities. The discursive events were also connected to neoliberalism and neoconservatism, those of which were implicitly articulated to dichotomize the imported TOEFL with newly developed tests of English indigenous to Korea.
