An International Nonproprietary Name (INN) identifies a pharmaceutical substance or active pharmaceutical ingredient by a unique name that is globally recognized and is of public property. Also known as the generic or common names, the official INNs are provided by national and international nomenclature bodies such as United States Adopted Names (USAN), British Approved Names (BAN), Japanese Accepted Names (JAN) and World Health Organization (WHO). Due to the increasing interest on the development of biotechnological products in Korea, needs for the formulated nomenclature body in Korea are arising for systemic management of newly developed biotechnological products. This study investigated and analyzed nomenclature systems and procedures for the selection of recommended INN for biotechnological products in WHO, USAN and JAN. Based on these documents from advanced countries, we suggested a Korean INN nomenclature organization named KAN (Korean Adopted Names or Korean Agreed Names). Composition and roles of KAN and KAN expert committee and a working process for INN selection/approval were also proposed. Taken together, this study provides a detailed information on INN system recognized worldwide and suggests guidelines for establishment of INN nomenclature system for biotechnological products in Korea.

Recently rapid aging society has been a critical issue everywhere in Korea. In transportation field, however, travel behavior of the elderly has not much been considered in transportation planning and policy, thereby limiting their mobility and accessibility. This study is to identify key factors influencing travel behavior of the elderly using 2006 household travel survey data in Seoul Metropolitan Area. To this end, we first conducted descriptive analysis on travel characteristics between elderly (65 years or older) and non-elderly (19 ~ 64 years) groups with respect to trip frequencies, trip purpose, mode, trip distance, and travel time. Then, we developed ordered probit models for number of trips, and log-linear models for travel distance and time by total and travel purpose (work and shopping/social/personal business), considering household and personal characteristics, and land use variables as explanatory variables, and compared the model results between two groups. The results show that economic and socio-demograhic variables (such as gender, age, household size, and income) and land use (such as population and employment density) variables significantly affect elderly travel.

S100 단백질은 세포의 성장, 증식 및 이동과 침윤성에 관여하는 칼슘결합 단백질이다. S100 단백질은 다양한 조직에 분포하고 있으며. 췌장암, 폐암, 구강암, 전립선암, 유방암 등에서 그 유전자가 과발현된다. 본 종설에서는 그간의 국내외 연구보고를 바탕으로 S100 단백질의 발견 및 특징, 기능과 세포의 침윤성에 미치는 영향을 요약, 정리하였다. 여러 암세포에서 S100단백질은 암이 치료되기 힘든 원인 중 하나인 암세포의 전이에 관여한다. 그 증거로 S100 단백질은 세포의 이동성과 침윤성을 유도하며, 암의 전이활성에 핵심적인 역할을 담당하는 MMP(matrix metalloproteinase)의 활성을 증가시킴이 보고되었다. S100 단백질에 관한 연구 결과의 정리는 암의 전이에 있어 S100 단백질의 중요성에 대한 이해를 돕는데 기여하리라 사료된다.
