The thought of St. Augustine belongs to the Christian metaphysics. Especially, all of his theories is based on the concept of 'Creation out of Nothingness' by God. That is, Augustine develops his ontological interpretation of anthropology and epistemology on the preposition that God created being out of non-being(God made the world out of nothingness). This indicates that the human is the being between being and nothing. Since the human beings exist by the continuous grace of God as the ground of being, one's existence(or being) is the metaphysical ground of God's goodness. This study is formulated to investigate the correlation between ontology and epistemology. For Augustine, there is a clear distinction between the concept of being and that of essence. As mentioned previously, beings mean human species stemming from the being of God. Essence is the ontological state of human beings. The essence was the ideal state when the creature was created by God in the beginning. The state of one's existential sanctification is also an ideal state. This study is to approach Augustine's epistemology through the classification of one's essential states. Since the human being is estranged from God, it should recover its divine essence within itself in order to be aware of God. The recovery can be made possible either by being given the truth as the divine essence or by elevating one's consciousness from the darkness. Augustine takes these two ways simultaneously.
