Vocabulary acquisition is one of the most crucial elements in the early stages of English learners, especially for Korean elementary school students. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors which affect vocabulary acquisition. The variables of gender, Korean vocabulary competence, English vocabulary exposure, parental attitude, students’ attitudes toward general English learning and English vocabulary learning, private tutoring and strategy use were measured through a questionnaire. The study surveyed 249 (128 males/121 females) 3rd to 6th graders from two different schools who also took a vocabulary test. The statistical analyses show that (1) students scored about 80% in the vocabulary test but the influence of early English education caused the individual difference of 3rd graders’ vocabulary competence being greater than that of other graders’; (2) vocabulary test scores, frequency of strategy use, and learning attitudes of female students are higher than those of male students; (3) all graders acquired nouns best, with adjectives next, and finding verbs the most difficult; (4) private tutoring affects the students’ vocabulary acquisition the most, followed by ‘discovery strategies’ use, general English learning attitude and English vocabulary learning attitude.
어머니의 학업성취압력과 초등학생의 학업스트레스 간의 관계에서 자아존중감의 조절효과

The purpose of this study was to find the moderating effect of children’s self-esteem on the relationship between maternal academic achievement pressure and children’s academic stress. Participants were 1,402 mothers with fourth-grade elementary school children from 2018 Korean Children Panel. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Correlation analysis was performed and significance of moderated pathways was determined using SPSS 21.0 and PROCESS macro 3.3, respectively. Results are as follows. First, maternal academic achievement pressure showed a positive correlation with children’s academic stress. On the other hand, children’s self-esteem showed negative correlations with maternal academic achievement pressure and children’s academic stress. Second, children’s self-esteem had a moderating effect on the relationship between maternal academic achievement pressure and children’s academic stress. Results of this study suggest that systematic and periodic programs should be developed to improve children’s self-esteem and maternal supportive role.

This study aimed to verify structural relationships among mothers positive parenting, childrens happiness, and childrens creativity. The subjects were 1,302 pairs of mothers and their children (656 boys and 646 girls), who had participated in the 10th year Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC). Mother’s positive parenting was measured using “Authoritative, Authoritarian, and Permissive Parenting Practices”. Childrens happiness was measured using the MCS Child Paper Self-Completion Questionnaire. To measure childrens creativity, the K-FCTES test was conducted. Structural equation model analysis revealed that mothers positive parenting have a significant positive effect on childrens happiness and childrens creativity. Childrens happiness had a significant positive effect on creativity. Finally, childrens happiness was found to mediate mothers positive parenting and children’s creativity. These results showed that mothers positive parenting affects children’s creativity directly or indirectly through childrens happiness.
