소설의형식에 대한 두 사유 -이바노프의소설-비극과 바흐찐의소설-대화
변현태 ( Hyun Tae Byun ) 영미문학연구회 2013 안과 밖 Vol.0 No.35
This paper focuses on understanding two concepts or ideas of the novel offered in the 1910s and 1920s: lvanov`s ‘novel-tragedy’ and Bakhtin`s ‘novel-dialog.’ The premise of the paper is that the two Russian philosophers proposed new radical concepts or ideas of the modern novel by introducing the ancient Greek genres, tragedy and dialog (Plato`s ‘Socratic dialog’), into the conception of the novel. Ivanov`s and Baktin`s thoughts have similarities as well as differences. First of all, they both begin with an analysis of Dostoevskii`s works, which are generally considered as the culmination of the modern novel. Secondly, the two philosophers propose a radical rethinking of the novelistic genre with reference to an ancient Greek genre: tragedy, or dialog. Finally, they present the novel above all as a ‘form’, as is conveyed by the key concepts of ‘forma formans’(lvanov) and ‘architectonic form’ (Bakhtin). Defining their thoughts on the novel as those on ‘form’, and opposing the postmodern conception of the novel as an institution, this paper attempts to radicalize the contemporaneity of the modern novel.
