In order to meet recent requirements in the design of HVAC blower, i.e., higher pressure rise, lower noise, better packaging, it is essential to understand the flow characteristics which is known to be complex due to its three dimensional transient feature. Both numerical and experimental analysis is playing an important role in the design of new fans and particularly, CFD analysis is widely used for detailed blade passage flow analysis, giving concrete knowledge for the blade shape design. In this paper, two different CFD methods are applied to simulate the flow through rotating rotors; one is the steady calculation in implicit multiple rotating frame with stationary grid, and the other is the transient approach in single static reference frame using moving mesh. The second method revealed not only higher pressure rise throughout the fan in the casing, but also more realistic pressure drop in the outlet duct. Computational results have also been compared with those of experiment at the best efficiency operating point. They showed reasonably good agreements and verified the reliability of the present numerical approach.

Performance improvement and longer service life of automotive catalytic convener can be achieved by improving the flow distribution of exhaust gas through a catalytic convener. Several design parameters which include the geometry of diffuser inlet and inlet diffuser, relative position of inlet pipe and monolith centers were investigated against their effects on flow uniformity in the convener. The flow distribution was improved by the geometry optimization of exhaust system under limited conditions.
