        현대영어교육 연구 논문 동향 고찰: 창립 20주년을 기념하며

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the trends of research articles in journal of Modern English Education during the period 2000-2019 in commemoration with the 20th anniversary of the foundation. The study analyzed a total of 657 research papers written by 891 scholars. Individual articles were analyzed in the aspects of the characteristics of research (article production, language, and type of author), research topics, research subjects, and research methodologies. Based on the findings, it is recognized that studies have made remarkable progress in quantity and quality during the period. In particular, it is notable that research topics and methodology have been diversified and expanded. The findings showed that in terms of research topics, the articles on teaching/learning and acquisition were the most examined and the highest percentage of research topics involved the four language skills. As for research subjects, college students ranked first. Finally, in terms of methodology, quantitative studies were conducted more frequently than other ones. On the basis of the analysis, future directions for the journal, Modern English Education, are discussed. The study suggests that further investigation into the development and trends of studies conducted in other journals is warranted and provides useful insight for future researchers.

        영어능력 인증제 능력별 교과과정 그리고 대학 교양영어 교육 : 학생과 교사의 인식에 대한 고찰

        This study aims to illustrate students' and teachers' perceptions towards Certification of English proficiency and proficiency- based curriculum, and to investigate their needs for developing college English program A total of 597 students and 28 teachers participated in the survey. The findings showed that both groups acknowledged the usefulness of the certification of English proficiency and proficiency-based curriculum However, both groups showed a negative response to 'waive test' (testing for the replacement of English required class). They also expressed high level of needs in increasing the number of courses and credit hours, reducing the class size, and improving facilities. Both groups perceived speaking and listening as more important skills, while students showed various preferences for effective language practice activities. The findings of this study suggest that the introduction of certification of English proficiency should be supplemented with follow-ups both in pedagogical aspect and on administrative level.

        TAK-264 (MLN0264) in Previously Treated Asian Patients with Advanced Gastrointestinal Carcinoma Expressing Guanylyl Cyclase C: Results from an Open-Label, Non-randomized Phase 1 Study

        Purpose This phase 1 dose-escalation portion of the study evaluated the safety, pharmacokinetics (PK), and antitumor activity of TAK-264 in Asian patients with advanced gastrointestinal (GI) carcinoma or metastatic or recurrent gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma expressing guanylyl cyclase C (GCC). Materials and Methods Adult patients with advanced GI malignancies expressing GCC (H-score  10) received TAK-264 on day 1 of 3-week cycles as 30-minute intravenous infusions for up to 1 year or until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. The primary objectives were to evaluate the safety profile including dose-limiting toxicities (DLTs) during cycle 1, determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD), and characterize the PK profile of TAK-264. Results Twelve patients were enrolled and treated with 1.2 mg/kg (n=3), 1.5 mg/kg (n=3), or 1.8 mg/kg TAK-264 (n=6). Median number of treatment cycles received was two (range, 1 to 10). None of the patients experienced a DLT and the MTD was not determined. Ten patients (83%) experienced adverse events (AEs). The most common were neutropenia, anorexia, and nausea (each reported by four patients). Five patients (42%) experienced grade  3 AEs consisting of tumor hemorrhage and hypertension, ascites, adrenal insufficiency, neutropenia and asthenia. Serum exposure to TAK-264 increased proportionally with the dose and the median half-life was approximately 5.5-6.6 days. No patients experienced an objective response. Conclusion TAK-264 demonstrated a manageable safety profile with limited antitumor activity consistent with studies conducted in Western patients with advanced GI malignancies. TAK-264 exposure increased proportionally with the dose.

        EFL Teachers’ Professional Development: Peer Coaching

        The purpose of this study is to explore the potential of peer coaching for EFL teachers’ professional development. For this study, 12 college teachers in Korea participated in a 10-week program. They were 7 males and 5 females, ranging in age from 24 to 37 years. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Reflective analysis was used to analyze individual interview data. From the findings, two significant categories of peer coaching were identified: positive and negative responses to peer coaching experience. However, the overriding themes that emerged from the data were the benefits of peer coaching. The participants were almost unanimous in their acknowledgement of the advantages of peer coaching, such as reflective support through other’s eyes, improved working environments, greater teaching strategies, higher professional self-esteem, and awareness of self-directed learning. Negative responses also appeared, mostly in regard to the working principles of implementation; the major issues of difficulties were time management, complexities of implementation procedure, stress and personal vulnerability, and relative lack of reflection and feedback skills. Demonstrating the participants’ experiences towards the peer coaching program, this study provides EFL teachers with useful insights into peer coaching as an effective tool of their professional development.

        The Effect of Flipped Learning in an EFL Classroom

        The purpose of the present study is to examine the impact of flipping the classroom on EFL students’ academic performance. Also, this study aims to explore the participants’ perceptions of flipped classroom. 133 university students were assigned to the experimental group (flipped learning) and control group (non-flipped learning). Data were collected via participants’ learning outcomes, a questionnaire, and interviews. The two groups of students’ pre and posttests scores were compared through a t-test. A questionnaire and interviews conducted by the students participating in the flipped classroom were analyzed to gain insights into the participants’ flipped learning experiences. The results indicate that flipped learning is associated with significant improvement in the students’ academic achievement. In addition, the findings show that students in the flipped classroom were highly positive in satisfaction, instructional effectiveness, desire to learn, and student engagement. It is hoped that this study will help pave the way for further research and for effective implementation of innovative instructional design in EFL classrooms.
