Vol.18 No.-

The Bracket clock in the collection of the Korean Christian Museum at Soongsil University underwent conservation treatment for a special exhibition. The compositional analysis showed that the body was made of brass plated with gold by fire-gilding(gold amalgam process), while the dial was identified as pure copper coated with enamel. The hands were made of steel. Remnants of adhesive tape on the dial were cleaned, followed by the addition of a protective coating. In order to restore it to a condition as similar to its original form as possible, replacements for missing parts were newly constructed out of brass and were connected to the hands and the dial. The dial was then fixed to the body using an acrylic support. The compositional analysis and conservation treatment have left the clock in stable condition and readily available for exhibitions and future studies.

Tageted bipolar radiofrequency decompression with vertebroplasty for intractable radicular pain due to spinal metastasis -a case report-

2016 Korean Journal of Anesthesiology Vol.69 No.4

Metastatic spinal tumors are usually quite difficult to treat. In patients with metastatic spinal tumors, conventional radiotherapy fails to relieve pain in 20–30% of cases and open surgery often causes considerable trauma and complications, which delays treatment of the primary disease. Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is considered to be useful in achieving rapid pain control and preventing further vertebral collapse due to spinal metastasis. However, symptoms of intraspinal neural compression can be contraindications to PVP. To overcome this problem, we performed PVP following targeted bipolar radiofrequency decompression, and examined the effect of the combined treatment in relieving severe radicular pain related to spinal cord compression caused by malignant metastatic tumors.

Early Movable Metal Types Produced by Lost-Wax Casting

2009 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.15 No.1

The oldest extant movable metal print book is Buljojikjisimcheyojeol (Jikji) [1-9], printed in Korea in 1377. The prevailing assertion has been that the movable metal type used in its printing was made through lostwax casting [3-6]. Unfortunately, however, there is no record of movable metal type being made from lostwax casting, and to this day no relics have been found supporting this claim. We report that the first known movable metal types having the features of lost-wax casting are found in the Wibuinja, the movable metal type of the Joseon Dynasty Period that is preserved by the National Museum of Korea. The tapered shape of the body of the movable type and the unevenness of the stripe before casting defects broke out both suggest use of the lost-wax casting method. Although our findings do not conclusively prove that the movable metal type used for Jikji was made through lost-wax casting, the possibility of its production from lostwax casting cannot be excluded because movable metal types made from lost-wax casting exist.

Vol.22 No.-

Nanotechnology, a multidisciplinary scientific undertaking, involves creation and utilization of materials, devices or systems on the nanometer scale. The field of nanotechnology is currently undergoing explosive development on many fronts. The technology is expected to create innovations and play a critical role in various biomedical applications, not only in drug delivery, but also in molecular imaging, biomarkers and biosensors. Target-specific drug therapy and methods for early diagnosis of pathologies are the priority research areas where nanotechnology would play a vital role. This review considers different nano-technology-based drug delivery and imaging approaches, and their economic impact on pharmaceutical and biomedical industries.

Vol.13 No.-

The flower type ornament of the gilt bronze palace-type sarira reliquary among those sarira reliquaries of the East Pagoda at the Gameunssa Temple Site, which is the Treasure No. 1359 owned by the National Museum of Korea, was separated from the sarira reliquary in November 2010, thus conducting conservation treatments to be done on two items including the gilt bronze palace-type sarira reliquary during the period of March-October 2011. Those conservation treatments were carried out by following the process of removing the coated areas having excessive gross and bubbles, re-coating with Incralac, and then strengthening both the cracked areas and the separated flower-type ornaments with woven glass fiber after rejoining. For those areas where removal of gloss and bubbles at the coating and adhesive areas was not possible, the gloss and bubbles were made less perceivable through matting treatment and coloring.

Vol.- No.86

The Gilt-bronze Standing Buddha with Inscription of ‘Yeonga Chilnyeon’is the oldest Buddhist sculpture with an inscribed date that has ever been found in Korea. The inscription of ‘seventh Yeonga year’places the date of production in the Goguryeo era, circa 539 CE. Conservation treatment was carried out to reinforce the weak halo that had cracks and to replace fixing clips with new a Ti one. Information which can be used to estimate making technology of the Buddha has been acquired by using optical microscopy and radiography during the conservation treatment. The lines of the head were carved after forming the Buddha’s shape with pattern material like beeswax. The inner area of the inscription and flame design of halo the have engraving marks, they were engraved after casting. There is an area inside the pedestal where have marks of cutting with a chisel like tools are present. The area is estimated to be the region of the gates through which molten metal was injected. Radiographs revealed an internal cavity which ranges from the neck to the abdominal region. The shape of the cavity shows that molten metal in the mould was solidified in an upright position. The position of the gates and the shape of the internal cavity suggest that the Buddha was cast with a bottom-gated system.
