        A Study on Translating Performance in the Adverbs with Two Forms and Different Meanings

        Translation has been used one of the essential teaching methods in the English classroom for a long time. Although it is a significant teaching methods, it has been excluded from measuring the students’ English proficiency in the English classroom. The purpose of this study aimed at exploring the performance differences in translating the adverbs with two forms but differing meanings into Korean. More specifically, this study investigated awareness of the differing meanings of the adverbs with two forms through translation. A total of 70 high school second years participated in the study. They were asked to translate 16 sentences during their class and each sentence was assigned 1 point each, implying the total score amounted to 16. The collected data was analyzed utilizing SPSS and the EXCEL program. The findings of the analysis revealed that the students performed differently in translating the adverbs with two forms and different meanings in the paired sentences. One of the findings was that the students outperformed in translating the adverbs rather than –ly adverbs. Another finding was that the students translated the adverbs “high” and “highly” most correctly, while they translated the adverbs “fair’ and ”fairly“ most poorly. Thus, these findings suggest that translation can be a teaching method in public English classroom since translations enable students to internalize the differences and apply to the sentences in which the different forms of the adverbs are used.

        A Study on Translating Performance Differences in ‘That’ between Secondary School Students and AI Translators

        The purpose of this study is to examine the performance differences in translating that functioning differently and having separate meanings in sentences into Korean. To accomplish this purpose, 69 high school second year students as well as three AI translators(Papago, Google Translate, and Kakao i) participated in the study. They translated six sentences having that used as a demonstrative pronoun, a demonstrative adjective, an adverb, a conjunction, a relative pronoun, and a relative adverb. One point was assigned to each sentence, which means that the total score was 6, and the collected data were analyzed using the EXCEL program. One of the findings was that the AI translators outperformed in translating that used as a demonstrative adjective, an adverb, and a relative adverb, while the students performed better in translating that used as a demonstrative pronoun. Another finding was that both the students and the AI translators used varying wording for the same words and expressions in their translations. Given the absorbing findings, it is hoped that this study would be employed as a guide for activating and intensifying translating activities and making use of AI translators in English class.

        A Study on the Performance Differences in Translating the Adjectives and Adverbs in the Same Form

        One of the essential elements of English teaching for a long time was translation, and a number of entrance exams of universities or colleges focused on translation of paragraphs or texts for decades. Despite its significance, it has been a significant missing part to measure English proficiency in the classroom because it is not a format for high-stakes tests in Korea. This paper aimed at examining the performance differences in translating the words with the same form as adjective and adverb used in the paired sentences into Korean. More specifically, this study examined the awareness of the differing meanings of the same form of the words used as both adjective and adverb through translation. A total of 54 high school second years participated in the study. The findings of their qualitative analysis highlighted that the participants performed differently in translating the words in the paired sentences. One of the findings was that the students translated the words “fast” and “high” most correctly for both adjective and adverb, while their translating performance was extremely poor at the words “pretty” and “well” in the paired sentences as adjective and adverb.

        A Study on the Performance Differences in Translating the Written Texts Derived from the KCSAT English

        Translation was a crucial element of English teaching for a long time in Korea, but it has been a significant missing part to measure communicative competence in English because of the arrival and dominance of communicative methodologies in English teaching and learning. This paper aimed at investigating the performance differences in translating the English written texts derived from the English listening and reading passages of the Korean College Scholastic Ability Test into Korean. The two texts had differing characteristics in terms of context, vocabulary, and format. More specifically, this study examined the impact of translation of the two different texts on students’ English level proficiency. A total of 38 high school seniors participated in the study. Findings revealed that the participants performed differently in translating the two different texts. One of the findings was that the students attained much higher scores in translating the listening passage than the reading passage. In addition, the students’ results of the practice test had high correlation with the translation scores on the reading passage.

        Correlations and Performance Differences by Gender between the KCSAT English and the EPT

        This study sought to examine correlations between the Korean College Scholastic Ability Test (KCSAT) and the English placement test (EPT) developed as part of the placement for the General education English program with a view to developing an appropriate placement test that meets the objectives of the program. It also examined performance differences between male and female students in the two tests. A total of 2,659 college freshmen participated. To analyze the data, descriptive statistics and correlations were utilized. The data analysis showed that the KCSAT English weakly correlates with the EPT (r=.347**). Furthermore, the female students performed slightly better than the male students in both KCSAT English (females: 37.13; males: 36.58) and EPT (females: 29.30; males: 28.79) in terms of mean scores. When the male and female students were classified into three groups (High: 768 males and 464 females, Mid: 807 males and 396 females, and Low: 147 males and 77 females) based on the KCSAT English scores and the EPT scores, the High female students performed better than the High male students. This study suggests that a placement test measuring language skills appropriate for the objectives of GELPs curriculum should be developed.

        자기결정이론에 근거한 부모교육 프로그램이 외현화 문제행동아동 부모의 양육행동, 기본심리적 욕구만족에 미치는 효과

        본 연구는 자기결정이론에 근거한 부모교육 프로그램을 외현화 문제행동아동을 둔 어머니를 대상으로 실시하여 양육행동, 기본심리적 욕구만족에 미치는 효과를 검증하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구대상은 경남 G시 소재 아동상담센터에서 참가를 희망하는 초등학생 부모 24명을 대상으로 K-CBCL 척도를 실시한 결과에 따라 실험집단 10명, 통제집단 10명으로 임의 배정하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 프로그램에 참여한 실험집단은 통제집단보다 양육행동이 유의하게 향상되었다. 둘째, 프로그램에 참여한 실험집단은 통제집단보다 기본심리적 욕구만족 점수가 유의하게 향상되었다. 이와 같은 연구 결과에 비추어 볼 때, 본 프로그램은 외현화 문제행동아동 부모들의 심리적 불편감을 해소하고 아동의 행동 특성에 적절하게 대처하는 능력을 향상시켜 부모로서의 자율성, 관계성, 유능성 욕구를 충족시키고 삶의 질을 높이는데 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구결과를 토대로 후속연구에 대한 제언과 시사점을 논의하였다. The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of the parent education program based on self-determination theory on parenting behaviors and basic psychological needs satisfaction of the mothers who have children with externalizing problem behaviors. The participants of this study were 20 mothers of elementary school students at a drop-in center in G city. After performing K-CBCL scale on volunteers, they were divided into an experimental and a control group, and each consisted of 10 mothers. The mothers in the experimental group attended a total of 10 sessions of the program twice a week, each for 120 mins, while those in the control group did not. The results of this study were as follows. First, positive parenting behaviors of the experimental group have been increased significantly higher than those of the control group, Second, the basic psychological needs satisfaction of the experimental group has also been improved significantly higher than that of the control group. In conclusion, the results showed that this program was effective not only in meeting the needs of parental autonomy, relationship and competence but also in enhancing the positive quality of life for the parents who had children with externalizing behavior problems by improving their ability to deal with children's behaviors and relieving their psychological discomfort. Finally, based on the findings, limitations of the current study and the suggestions for a further research were presented.

        A Study on the Performance Differences in Translating an Academic Reading Text and a Conversation Text

        A Study on the Performance Differences in Translating an Academic Reading Text and a Conversation Text Park, Tae-Ja (Korea University) The goal of the present study is to examine the performance in translating the sentence types of both the academic reading text and the conversation text derived from one of the KCSAT English tests, into Korean. To fulfill the goal, this study adopted the combination of both quantitative and qualitative analyses of the translation performances, seeking the answers to the research questions. A total of 53 high school freshmen in Korea participated in the current study. The data was analyzed utilizing SPSS 21 for descriptive statistics, independent- samples t-test, and correlations as well as the Excel program for the characteristics of the students’ translations in terms of vocabulary, idioms, and expressions used in the texts, so this study is the combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches. Findings revealed that the students performed differently in translating the sentence types of the two different texts. One of the findings was that the students outperformed in translating the conversation text to the academic reading text. Additionally, the students obtained the highest score on the simple sentences. The implication of the study discusses the necessity of the teachers providing the texts with various sentence types for translations to help the students improve their English proficiency.

        A Study on Translating Performance Difference in the Present Participle and the Gerund between Secondary School Students and AI Translators

        This study aimed to explore the performance differences in translating the present participle and the gerund functioning differently in the sentences into Korean. More specifically, it examined the discernment between the present participle and the gerund, both of which end with - ing. To that end, a total of 66 high school second year students as well as three AI translators (Papago, Google, and Kakao i) participated in the study. They translated six sentences having both the present participle in the present progressive tense and the gerund used as subject and subject complement in the sentences. One point was assigned to each sentence, implying the total score was 6, and the collected data were analyzed using the EXCEL program. One of the findings was that the students outperformed in translating the gerund, while the AI translators performed better in translating the present participle. Another finding was that the students and the AI translators employed varying wording for the same words and expressions in their translations. Another finding was that the types of register were varying in their translations. Given the intriguing findings, this study could be used as a guide for implementing translating activities and utilizing AI translators in English classroom.

        Correlations and Predictability between the Subsections of the TOEIC Listening and Reading Test

        This study examines whether the listening and reading components of the TOEIC test are distinct and related to each other. Specifically, the study was designed to investigate correlations between the subsections of the listening and reading comprehension components of the TOEIC test. To achieve this purpose, data were collected from 500 Korean college students who completed a simulated TOEIC test during a TOEIC preparation course. Data were analyzed using correlations, regression, and factor analysis. One finding is that the test-takers performed better in listening comprehension than reading comprehension. As well, all subsections of the listening and reading comprehension components produced unexpected results in confirmatory factor analysis. The implication is that the simulated TOEIC test format did not explain the test results for each part; however, after excluding the problematic items, some subsections were shown to be underlying factors affecting test scores. These results suggest that further research should be conducted on other factors that might affect the test results.

        Translation of the Relative and Object Clause Sentences of ‘That’ and the Grammar Knowledge of the Korean EFL Learners

        Translating specific grammar knowledge is of great importance and effect as one of the activities to motivate the students to learn English grammar with more interest in the EFL classroom. However, the current practice of teaching and testing L2 grammar is manly through reading texts or passages rather than translating them. This study investigates how EFL college students perform translating specific grammar in the sentences. More specifically, it aims to investigate their achievement of translating relative clauses and object clauses. The data was composed of the translations drawn from 82 college students taking an English grammar course and their four formative grammar tests. The analyses of data revealed that the students’ translations were found to be similar in the two grammars. Despite the similar translation performance, the translation errors were found. One of the error types was that some students did not understand the sentential structure, but they comprehended the overall meanings of the sentences.
