Railway works on or near the line, or trackside works, typically have high potential of accidents, as the works have to be frequently performed during the train operation. In order to reduce the risks associated with the railway trackside works effectively, a systematic risk assessment must be performed considering the hazards that contribute to the accidents. In this study, hazards are identified for railway trackside works by analysing data from Korea Railroad for accidents that have occurred between the year of 2000 and 2006. The hazard list produced in this study is expected to be effectively used for the risk assessment of the trackside works.

Train collision and derailment are types of accident that happen with low probability of occurrence but could lead to disastrous consequences including multiple life losses. Risk assessment of the accidents are typically performed per their hazardous events, which are defined as events that cause accidents. This study classifies the train collision and derailment based on the relevant hazardous event, and investigates the causes related to the hazardous events. Finally, the relation of the causes, hazardous events, and the accidents are defined.

Vacuum tube train system is a new system where a train runs inside a tube structure that has the air pressure of approximately 1/10 of the atmospheric pressure, so that the train speed of up to 700㎞/h could be obtained. The recent public interest for lower pollution transportation system calls for the need of new system such as the vacuum tube system. From the infra-structure point of view, the essential technology for the vacuum tube system would be to control and maintain the sub-atmospheric pressure inside the tube. This study presents the methodology to estimate the performance requirement of vacuum tube structure. In addition, the air-permeability test for concrete is performed for several levels of concrete compressive strengths. Utilizing the test results, the air-tightness of a hypothetical vacuum tube structure is analytically quantified.

It is generally expected that bridges of different types yields different seismic behaviors. However, bridges of a type could show different seismic characteristics depending on the configuration such as number of spans, span length and pier height. Therefore, consideration of this configuration effect of bridges when performing a seismic risk analysis of bridge structures is needed. This study performs seismic analysis of Track-on Steel-Plate-Girder (TOSPG) railway bridges of various configurations considering three factors - number of spans, span length and pier height. In the end, the effect of each factor on the seismic response of the bridge is identified.
