The magnetic properties of the single-crystalline orthoferrites TbFeO3 and ErFeO3 were investigated by using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Both ferrites exhibit weak ferromagnetism with the maximum saturated moment being 0.125 and 0.054 μB/Fe for TbFeO3 and ErFeO3, respectively. We confirmed the spin reorientation transition (SRT) in both systems. These two ferrites display different temperature-dependent behaviors of the magnetization, which we analyzed within the molecular field model. The results suggest that the Fe 3d-Er 4f magnetic coupling through the molecular field of the ordered Fe net moment is unexpectedly antiferromagnetism, opposite to the ferromagnetic Fe 3d-Tb 4f coupling. Further, the coupling widely varies with temperature and/or with the SRT, indicating that the Tb/Er moment is not simply explained by the partial polarization of the paramagnetic spins experiencing the molecular eld of the net Fe moment.

A Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) GUN-IV type photocathode rf gun has been fabricated to use in femto-second electron diffraction (FED), the femto-second far infra-red radiation (fs-FIR) facility, and the X-ray free electron laser (X-FEL) at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL). The gun consists of a 1.6-cell cavity with a copper cathode, a solenoid magnet, beam diagnostic component and auxiliary systems. The dimensions of the cavity that provided the desired resonant frequency were determined by using the SUPERFISH code. The change in the resonant frequency due to the laser port and the wave-guide port on the cavity wall was estimated with Slater's perturbation theorem. The size of the ports was finalized by using a series of cutting and measuring processes. A method to measure the resonant frequency of the cavity during the operation was developed. Finally, the microwave and the basic beam parameters were measured carefully to confirm the successful fabrication of the photocathode RF gun system.

We analysed interfacial traps in organic thin-film transistors (TFTs) in which pentacene and 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)-pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) organic semiconductors were deposited by means of vacuum-thermal evaporation and drop-coating methods, respectively. The thermally-deposited pentacene film consists of dentritic grains with the average grain size of around 1 m, while plate-like crystals over a few hundred microns are observed in the solution-processed TIPS-pentacene film. From the transfer characteristics of both TFTs, lower subthreshold slope of 1.02 V/decade was obtained in the TIPS-pentacene TFT, compared to that (2.63 V/decade) of the pentacene transistor. The interfacial trap density values calculated from the subthreshold slope are about 3.4×1012/cm2 and 9.4×1012/cm2 for the TIPS-pentacene and pentacene TFTs, respectively. Herein, lower subthreshold slope and less interfacial traps in TIPS-pentacene TFTs are attributed to less domain boundaries in the solution-processed TIPS-pentacene film.

Herein, we describe the effect of the cooling-off condition of a solution-processed 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)-pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) film on its molecular distribution and the resultant electrical properties. Since the solvent in a TIPS-pentacene droplet gradually evaporates from the rim to the center exhibiting a radial form of solute, for a quenched case, domains of the TIPS-pentacene film are aboriginally spread showing original features of radial shape due to suppressed molecular rearrangement during the momentary cooling period. For the slowly cooled case, however, TIPS-pentacene molecules are randomly rearranged during the long cooling period. As a result, in the lopsided electrodes structure proposed in this work, the charge transport generates more effectively under the case for radial distribution induced by the quenching technique. It was found that the molecular redistribution during the cooling-period plays an important role on the magnitude of the mobility in a solution-processed organic transistor. This work provides at least a scientific basis between the molecular distribution and electrical properties in solution-processed organic devices.

The refusal to grant a licence, which is the straightforward exercise of intellectual property rights, cannot in itself constitute an abusive conduct. However, under exceptional circumstances, it can amount to an abuse, which is prohibited by Article 82 of the EC Treaty. The European Courts have established the exceptional circumstances under which the refusal to license intellectual property rights constitutes an abuse of a dominant position. The exceptional circumstances are: (1) the product or technology in question must be indispensable to carrying on a particular business; (2) the refusal is such as to exclude all competition on a secondary market; (3) the refusal prevents the appearance of a new product for which there is a potential consumer demand; and (4) the refusal is not objectively justified. Even though European Courts have applied the principles of the exceptional circumstances to some cases, there are uncertainties in interpreting the exceptional circumstances because the meaning of new products or services is not clear and what constitutes the objective justification is ambiguous. As far as patents are concerned, care has to be paid in applying the exceptional circumstances. Patents are generally the outcome of considerable research and development of a private undertaking and are closely related to the incentives to invent and innovate. Unlike the copyright which subsisted in TV listings, patent rights are essential factors in technical innovation in that they encourage the economic entities to participate in the innovative activities by providing exclusive rights to patent owners. Unlike the brick structure in IMS, a patent is created from the risk taking effort of private undertakings and thus is privately owned property. It may be argued that uniform application of the exceptional circumstances to any sorts of intellectual property rights is not appropriate. Rather, it seems persuasive to argue that it is necessary to take into consideration the nature of the subject matters protected by intellectual property laws. As for patents, which are generally created by the considerable research and development of a private undertaking, the application of the exceptional circumstances should be restricted and, care should be taken in order not to punish the successful innovator by imposing improper duty.
