Purpose: Despite the development of transportation, accessibility of medical service on islands is still poor. Therefore, providing adequate emergency medical services is becoming more important. The purpose of this study is to measure and describe utilization patterns of emergency medical services for the residents of islands. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional observational study of transported patients who live on islands and in urban areas from January 1st, 2011 to December 31th, 2013 was conducted. Through review of emergency medical technician (EMT) transfer records, the demographic information of transferred patients, the frequency of emergency medical services (EMS) activation, and the characteristics of transfer were collected. Results: A total of 31,690 people were included; 29,064 people of urban areas and 2,626 people of islands. The mean age was older in the residents of islands (66±19 years old vs. 50±24 years old, p<0.001). For the residents of islands, the landline phone is the most common means of EMS activation (36.4% vs 29.9%, p<0.001), and the highest frequency of EMS activation was June (10.9% vs. 9.0% in August, p<0.001). The distance of transfer was longer for islands (5 min, 2-12) compared with urban areas (3 min, 2-4) (p<0.001). Conclusion: The above is an important indicator of specificity and form of urban residents and island residents using the EMS. It is our purpose that efficient EMS service be provided depending on each specificity.

In our search for bioactive natural products with antitumor activity, we have valuated various extracts of Saururi Herba (Saururaceae), which has been used in traditional medicine for edema, beriberi, jaundice, turbid urine, carbuncle and furuncle. The hexane extract of the aerial part of this plant was found to show a potent cytotoxicity against several kinds of cultured human solid tumor cell lines (AGS, A549, HCT15, SKOV3, HEP-3B) in vitro. Using cytotoxicity-guided chromatographic separation of the hexane extract, cytotoxic constituent: 10-aminomethyl-3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenanthrene-carboxylic acid lactam, was isolated and structurally identified by physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic evidences.

For the investigation of bioactive natural products with analgesic activity, we have evaluated various extracts of Saururi Herba (Saururaceae), which has been used in traditional medicine for edema, beriberi, jaundice, turbid urine, carbuncle and furuncle. The diethylether extract of this plant was found to show a significant analgesic effect on writhing syndrome in mice. Using bioactivity-guided separation of the diethylether extract, analgesic constituent, (8S, 8`R, 7R, 6`R)-2`-oxo-4,5: 4`,5`-bis(methylenedioxy)-delta1,3,5,3`-8.8`, 7.6`, 2.O.5`-neolignan(sauchinone) was isolated and structurally identified by physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic evidences. This compound has good analgesic activity with lower toxicity, as compared to other antipyretic-analgesic drug(acetaminophen).

Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between adolescents and adults, in the perspective-taking ability, as well as the brain activation patterns during the perspective-taking situation. Methods We recruited healthy adolescents aged 13 years to 15 years (n = 20) and adults aged 19 years to 29 years (n = 20). All the subjects were scanned while performing the perspective-taking task, in which an emotional situation was presented in the form of statements comprising first person, as well as third person perspectives. Differences in brain activation between groups were assessed by contrasting neural activity during the tasks. Results In the between-group analysis, while performing the third-person perspective-taking task, the adolescent group showed greater neural activities in the middle frontal gyrus and precentral gyrus as compared to the adult group. Positive correlation was observed between the activity in the frontal areas (Brodmann area 6/9) and the score of scales related to perspective-taking and social cognition in the adolescent group. Conclusions This study suggests that several frontal brain areas of adolescents needs to be overactivated in order to compensate for low perspective-taking ability when they ought to take another person's point of view.
A Sliding Mode Observer Design for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

This paper presents the sliding mode observer of an induction motor for the fuel cell electric vehicles. The exact rotor flux estimation of the induction motor is important for achieving the best performance from the fuel cell electric vehicle system. However, the flux estimator of the induction motor control is highly sensitive to the voltage sensor output characteristics and system parameter variation influenced by external factors. In order to eliminate these problems, this paper investigates the electric vehicle performance due to parameter variation of the induction motor. A new method to estimate the fuel cell electric vehicle system is proposed based on the sliding mode observer.
