This paper investigates the impact of participation in global value chains (GVC) on output volatility. GVC participation can increase volatility by encouraging specialization and raising exposure to foreign shocks. On the other hand, GVC participation allows countries to diversify the demand and supply chains for intermediate goods across countries. Furthermore, GVC participation reduces the failure intermediate suppliers to deliver their products on schedule, because producers participating GVC are more efficient than others. The ultimate effects of GVC participation on output volatility are determined by the interaction of these two forces. Using the World Input Output database covering 43 countries, 22 manufacturing industries and the period 2000- 2014, this paper finds that GVC participation reduces output volatility. This finding is robust to changes in the time period measuring output volatility and alternative estimator.

This study investigates empirically the impacts of Korea’s regional trade agreements on the extensive and intensive margins of exports measured by the number of firms and the average exports per firm at the HS 6 digit level. In order to control the average treatment effects of RTAs and multilateral resistance, time-varying importer fixed effects are applied. Furthermore, I also include time-varying product fixed effects and importer-product fixed effects. I find that Korea’s RTAs have contributed to increase bilateral trade between member countries. In particular, RTAs have the positive and significant impacts on the extensive margins measured by the number of firms. Furthermore, the empirical results of the effects of RTAs on the intensive margins are mixed. However, after controlling the endogeneity problems by applying the fixed effects models, the coefficient of RTAs turns out to be significant at the 10 percent level. Thus this paper concludes that RTAs also have the positive effects on the intensive margins.

While a number of studies on the global value chains (GVC) participation focus only on the manufacturing sector, this paper investigates the impact of the GVC participation on comparative advantage in the services as well as manufacturing sector. The most empirical literature on comparative advantage measures export performance as gross exports. With the emergence of global value chains, however, gross exports increasingly include foreign value added that is not related to domestic activities. Therefore, this study measures export performance as domestic value added in exports. The empirical results show that the GVC participation ofㆍKorean manufacturing industries has the positive and significant impact on comparative advantage. However, backward GVC participation of Korean services has negative effect on comparative advantage. These results are robust to using Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood estimation.

This paper studies the importance of social capital for comparative advantage. In particular, we suggest that contract institution is not the only way to alleviate so called “hold-up” problem, instead social capital can be also a source of comparative advantage. Using the panel data on 40 countries and 14 manufacturing industries for the period from 1995 to 2009, we examine the impacts of social capital on trade patterns. Moreover, the system GMM estimator is employed to cope with the potential endogeneity problem. Furthermore, the literature on sources of comparative advantage uses gross value of exports at the industry level as the dependent variable. However, with deepening global value chains allowing goods and services cross border many times, gross value of exports inevitably includes value added created in foreign countries and thus is not the appropriate measure of export performance for the analysis of comparative advantage. To deal with this problem, we use value added in exports as the dependent variable. We find that social capital can be an alternative to contract institution. This result still holds in the robustness check when we use the alternative measures of social capital such as trust, and tolerance.

This paper investigates the impacts of FTAs on the exports, the intensive margins of exports and the extensive margins of exports of SMEs. To control the average treatment effects and multilateral resistance, I use panel data with country pair and country-and-time fixed effects as Baier and Bergstrand (2007) suggested. Using the panel data on exports and the number of SMEs at the HS 6 digit level and Poisson Pseudo-Maximun Likelihoood estimator, I find that FTAs increase the exports of SMEs. Furthermore, I find that FTAs have positive impacts on the extensive margins of exports measured by the number of firms. However, the effects of FTAs on the intensive margins of exports are insignificant.

This paper empirically investigates the impacts of global value chain (GVC) participation on comparative advantage. Using World Input Output database we decompose gross exports into domestic value-added and foreign value-added components. To avoid endogeneity arising from omitted variables and simultaneity, we include various fixed effects and use lagged measures of the GVC participation. We find that the GVC participation is positively associated with comparative advantage. In particular, we find that the impacts of the forward GVC participation on comparative advantage are positive, but those of the backward GVC participation are negative. These estimation results are robust to the sample restrictions dividing exporters into developed and developing countries.

Based on the previous studies showing that services offshoring has a significant positive effect on productivity, this study investigates the impacts of services offshoring on comparative advantage in manufacturing industries of 43 countries between 2000 and 2014. In particular, this paper measures export performance by domestic value added in exports rather than gross exports, because gross exports containing foreign value added are inadequate to examine the importance of comparative advantage in a world with global value chains. Using a panel data model with three dimensional fixed effects (exporter-importer-year, importer-industry-year, and exporter-industry fixed effects), we find a significant positive effects of services offshoring on comparative advantage. This result is also valid for Korean manufacturing industries.
