The purpose of this article is to review the changes of perspectives on the Third World development in development studies. Employing the Kuhnian concept of $quot;paradigm change', it explains the rise and fall of the mainstream Western development theory (Modernization theory) and Dependency theory respectively, and discusses the prospect of newly emerging paradigm-possibly Statist theory. Accordingly more attention is paid to the industrialization processes of East Asian NICs, which have been often referred to as the prominent counter instances of Dependency theory, with a view to discuss whether market intervention of the state would contribute to successful economic development in developing countries.
로벗 브라우닝(Robert Browning)의 시적 담론으로서의 폭력성
문진영 동아대학교 2000 동아영어영문학 Vol.16 No.-
Robert Browning, one of the greatest English Victorian poets in the 19th-century, deals with various subjects such as love , religion, and arts, especially true love and positive living, by using his unique dramatic monologue. In his love pomes, however, the poems that are related to unhappy, unfulfilled, or perverse characters, outnumber the positive pomes. Even there are several poems revealing violence, an element quite opposite to love. Here it can be understood that Browning tries to let the readers find out what he wants to say through the shocking subject matter of violence and its cause. This paper aims to examine what Browning wants to disclose and what he wants to express by focusing on "My Last Duchess" and "Porphyria's Lover which contain murder, the most extreme violence, among his love poems. In "My Last Duchess", the readers lean that the reason the Duke killed his former wife is that he wants to keep his false pride and the family prestige. In the end, it is revealed that the Duke himself sticks deeply to the family name with a long history and imprisons himself in the custom of patriarchy. And in "Porphyria's Lover" the deluded man suffocates his lover with her in order to prolong the very moment, he thinks, of perfect love and tries to beautify the number. By reading the desire of the Porphyria's Lover, Browning's philosophy of faultiness can be observed. In these poems, by expressing murder and love at the same time in roundabout way, Browning does not say directly about the social problems such as old aristocracy and patriarchy custom and his philosophy of faultiness but tries to present his thought and philosophy more clearly by raising the readers' interests in the details of the murder such as the lovers' relationship and the cause of murder with the shock of murder itself.

The diverse imperfect characters of Robert Browning's dramatic monologues were created by a poet who thought of human beings and the world with affection, and such characters also reflect his readers' human imperfectious. Among his works, especially in his greatest long poem The Ring and the Book, there are many imperfect characters of various personalities, and in this poem Browning directly addressed his contemporaries in Britain in the 19th century. Therefore this paper examines what awareness Browning had of his contemporary readers and what he thought of them, by analyzing the general Roman speakers' points of view toward the Guido case mainly in Book 2, Book 3, and Book 4 of The Ring and the Book. “Half-Rome” in Book 2 took advantage of the Guido case to warn or threaten his own wife's seducer. “The Other Half-Rome” in Book 3 showed a self-interested view of the case. “Tertium Quid”, the speaker of Book 4, displayed to an ethical relativism. Thus, through the attitudes of the speakers failing to approach the truth for their individual reasons, readers realize that the pictures of the speakers are no different from themselves. And the fact that Browning presented these general speakers before any other speakers except the poet/speaker resulted from an intentional descriptive strategy of the author to help readers discover their images of themselves first by reading the work, and so, to gain a more objective perspective in the poem as well as in the problems of 19th century Britain.
