Vol.11 No.1

(Background) The 21st century is an era of informatization and a move towards a liberalized society. Because of the progress in society, children have easy access to computers and mass media, which are being accessed at very young ages, and consequently, they are moving away from reading. Childhood, a developmental stage of life cycle, is an important foundation for growth and can sensitively respond to the physical environment, and consequently, experiences in the environment have considerable effects on the physical and cognitive development of children. Among various environments influencing children, children’s reading rooms in public libraries as social and educational institutions for children have the responsibility and role of shaping good reading habits and satisfying their psychological needs. (Methods and purposes) The purpose of this study is to explore an improvement strategy by reflecting on children``s behavior related to visual elements with an understanding of the actual condition and problems of presently functional children‘s reading rooms, and to provide standards for elements of indoor space for creating the right reading culture. This study focused on analyzing representative libraries of the autonomous regions in Seoul. It examined five reading rooms, including children``s reading room and collected specific data for providing better quality reading experience to children between 6 and 13 years, who are the main users of libraries. The study used a comparative analysis methodology comprising four types of visual elements: security, extensity, amenity, and accessibility, which are used for categorization in (1) analyses of homes, and (2) previous studies reviewing behavioral characteristics of children. The process of perception involves ascertaining visual elements in the interior space that are visible to the eye, followed by imaging in the brain, which is finally quantified. Curiosity and a strong desire to explore a new form results in development of visual perception in children. After being visually perceived in the brain, visual elements try to communicate in a variety of ways and through the body, which helps to improve emotional and intellectual abilities of the child. Visual element speed up perceptual process through an extensive relationship with the external environment. (Results) Through a comparison and analysis of children’s reading rooms with standards of visual elements for indoor space by means of the behavioral characteristics of children, it was found that security was desired the most and amenity the least. Thus, there are many aspects to be enhanced and safe indoor elements should be kept in consideration while planning for children‘s reading rooms. The indoor environment has to be enhanced for children to bask in a favorable environment.
