Comparing the Garden Path Effect between the first and second pass analysis in Phonetics

본 논문의 궁극적 목표는 The woman rushed to the hospital had given birth safely 와 같이 garden path 현상이 발생하는 문장에서 FPA 상황과 SPA 상황에서 어떠한 차이를 보이는지를 살펴보고 이 결과를 바탕으로 garden path 현상이 음성학적으로 어떠한 형태로 나타나는지를 규명하는 것이다. 이 목표를 위하여 두 상황간의 발화시간과 F0값을 측정 후 피치패턴의 차이를 비교해 보았다. 실험결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, ambiguous post-verbal NPs문장과 NP-verb-by-PP문장에서는 두 상황간의 발화시간이 유의미한 차이가 나타나지 않는 반면 passive- causative verbs문장에서만 휴지 구역에서 발화시간의 차이를 관찰 할 수 있었다. 둘째, F0값을 바탕으로 피치패턴은 세 문장 모두 문두구역과 중의구역에서 피치패턴의 변화를 관찰할 수 있었다. 발화시간의 결과는 선행연구 결과와 부합되지 않는 것으로 이는 실험 참여자들의 영어의 능숙도 및 참여 인원 등 다양한 원인이 있을 수 있으므로 이는 차후 연구과제로 돌리기로 한다.

플립 러닝을 기반으로 한 토익영어(ETP) 수업의 효과

The Effect of flipped learning on ETP TOEIC class Do, Suk-jin(Dongguk University Paramita College) Jin, Young-sun(Kyungpook National University) The goal of this paper is to design an TOEIC English (ETP) teaching and learning model for the students who take intermediate level university English class and apply it to the actual class to examine its effectiveness on the learners’ academic achievement and their learning satisfaction. Based on the assumption of the flipped learning, TOEIC LC and RC vocabulary, listening sample questions, You Tube videos and grammar sub-materials were given to the students of experimental group and informed to study the material at home in advance. After 16 weeks, the posttest scores of 22 students showd a statistically significant improvement in RC test but not in LC test when compared with those scores of the control group. Secondly, learners in the experimental group were generally satisfied with the Flipped Learning lesson, reporting higher ratings on the increased level of motivation and their self-directed learning. Lastly, experimental group showd an increased level of understanding of the lectures through advance learning and active participation in discussion. Finally, it was suggested that the development of advance learning materials, improvement of classroom environment and the diversification of Flipped Learning teaching and learning models are expected to help learners excel in their academic achievement. 플립 러닝을 기반으로 한 토익영어(ETP) 수업의 효과도숙진(동국대학교 파라미타칼리지) 진영선(경북대학교 사회대 심리학과) 본 연구의 목표는 중급수준의 대학 교양 토익영어(ETP) 수업을 듣는 학습자들을 대상으로 플립러닝 ETP 교수 학습 모델을 실제 수업에 적용 하였을 때 학습자들의 학업 성취도와 학습 만 족도에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 알아보고자 하였다. 우선 22명의 실험집단 학생들에게 토익 리스 닝 문제풀이, 토익 LC와 RC단어 리스트, 문법 유튜브와 문법 보조자료를 SNS와 이클래스에 올 려준 뒤 집에서 미리 학습해오게 하고 수업 시간에는 소그룹 활동을 통하여 심화 수업을 진행하 였다. 수업 후에는 SNS를 통해 보내진 학습자들의 수업 및 플립 러닝에 대한 피드백을 통해 플 립러닝의 장점과 단점 그리고 개선점 등을 알아보았다. 16주 동안 진행되어진 실험에서 얻은 결 과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사전 사후 테스트 결과에서 플립 러닝 수업을 한 실험 집단의 학업 성 취도가 통제집단의 학업 성취도보다 더 높게 나타났다. 구체적으로, 독해이해검사(RC)에서 실험 집단은 통제집단에 비해 통계적으로 유의한 성적향상이 관찰되었다. 그러나 듣기이해검사(LC) 영 역에서는 실험집단의 성적 향상이 통제 집단에 비해 다소 더 큰 것으로 나타났지만 이는 통계적 으로는 유의하지는 않은 수준이었다. 둘째, 실험 집단의 학습자들은 플립러닝 수업에 대체로 만 족하는 것으로 나타났으며 또 자신들의 학업에 대한 동기 유발에 도움이 되었으며 특히 자기 주 도적 학습을 하는데 기여한 것으로 답하였다. 셋째, 플립러닝의 장점으로는 선행 학습으로 인한 수업 이해도 증가, 토론에 적극적 참여 및 자기 주도적 학습을 가능하게 하는 것으로 나타났으며 단점으로는 선행 학습을 해 오지 않은 학생들의 소극적 수업 참여와 수업 시간의 부족으로 나타 났다. 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 선행학습 자료의 개발, 플립러닝에 맞춘 교실환경의 개선 그리 고 플립러닝 교수 학습 모델의 다양화를 꾀한다면 플립러닝 수업은 학습자들에게 유용한 효과 를 줄 것으로 보인다.

The Effects of a TTS-Based Pre-Reading Activity in a Flipped Learning English Class

This study investigated whether and to what extent a TTS-assisted pre-reading activity is effective in improving reading performance by college students in a flipped learning reading classroom. Over a semester, a total of 46 college students in an English reading course participated in the study. The participants assigned to the experiment group were treated with a TTS-based pre-reading activity while those in the control group received regular reading instructions. Both groups took pre- and post-tests for their reading proficiency and completed pre- and post-questionnaires asking about their experience of English reading in flipped learning class and their opinions of the TTS activity. Results showed that the participants in the experiment group made a statistically significant improvement in their vocabulary and reading performance and evaluated the TTS-based activity mostly positively by rating the activity as helpful in improving their reading proficiency and in boosting their confidence and motivation in English reading. This paper concludes by discussing some of the ways in which TTS-based activities can be included in college English course designs to better help EFL students learn the target language more effectively and efficiently.

The Phonetic Realization of English Garden Path Sentences in Dialogue Conditions

The so-called garden path sentences like The woman rushed to the hospital had given birth safely are temporary ambiguous because they lead down the garden path between a main clause and reduced relative clause analysis. The three out-loud reading experiments are conducted (i) to investigate how people process temporary ambiguous sentences in out-reading situations compared to speaking situations, and (ii) to examine how the temporary ambiguous sentences are manifested phonetically in the both situations. Participants were asked to read the prime garden path sentences and reread the same sentences to accomplish the aim of the present study. The sentences of the experiments were divided into the initial, ambiguous, pause, disambiguating and post-disambiguating regions and each region was compared, and also the difference of the F0 and the pitch were examined between the two situations. It was found that (1) the pause region in the reading situations was much longer than that in the speaking situations and (2) the results found in the initial and ambiguous regions in reading and speaking situations were dramatically different in terms of the F0 and pitch patterns.

How are the English Garden Path Sentences realized Phonetically in Context Conditions?

본 논문은 선행연구에서 제기되어진 SFA 상황에서의 garden path현상이 SSA상황에서와는 어떠한 차이를 보이는지를 실험 문장내의 구역별간 발화시간의 차이와 F0값으로 구성된 피치패턴의 차이를 통하여 조사해보고 그 결과를 바탕으로 garden path 현상이 음성학적으로 어떠한 형태로 나타나는지를 규명하는 것이 궁극적 목표이다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 발화시간의 차이를 통하여 garden path 현상을 관찰 할 수 있었다. 우선 passive-causative verbs문장과 ambiguous post-verbal NPs문장은 휴지구역에서 NP-verb-by-PP문장은 중의성이 해소되는 구역에서 발화시간의 차이를 보였다. 둘째, 세 문장 모두 문두구역과 중의구역에서 피치패턴의 변화를 관찰 할 수 있었다. 이러한 발화시간의 차이와 피치패턴의 변화는 각 문장의 중의성 해소구역에 도달했을 때 garden path현상의 유무에 따라 문장의 재분석이 발생하는가에 따른 결과라 보여진다.

Effectiveness of Repeated Reading Aloud Tasks through a Smart Phone on Academic Achievement and Attitude of EFL College Learners

The goal of this study is to examine the effectiveness of repeated reading aloud tasks through a smart phone on academic achievement as well as college learners’ attitude for EFL English learning. For the purpose of this study, 45 students participated. All participants were EFL college students taking a required English course. The groups were divided into two groups; the smart phone assisted repeated reading aloud group (SARRG) and the traditional repeated reading aloud group (TRRG). Participants in SARRG (n=24) were asked to read text passages and send to the instructor what they recorded using a smart phone, whereas those in TRRG (n=21) only read the text passages for fifteen weeks. The participants were required to take general reading comprehension pre and post-tests in order to examine students’ academic achievement. Each group was also divided into two groups according to the reading comprehension pre-test score to examine if the learners’ score level affects the improvement of their academic achievement. Participants were also surveyed pre and post-attitude questionnaires to investigate the change of students’ learning attitude. The findings revealed that SARRG showed significant improvements in terms of academic achievement, while TRRG did not. Especially, the low score level group for TRRG did not show any significant improvement. The questionnaire results revealed that smart phone assisted repeated reading aloud tasks positively influenced EFL learners’ learning motivation, interest and active participation in English learning.

플립러닝 기반 실시간 온라인 교양영어 수업에 대한 학습자 만족도 연구

본 논문의 목적은 플립러닝을 기반으로 한 실시간 온라인 교양영어 수업에서 성적 하위 그룹 학습자 대상으로수업에 대한 만족도를 알아보고 대면 수업환경에서 실시한 플립러닝의 결과와 어떻게 다른지 비교해 보는 것이다. 이러한 연구목적을 위해, 2021년도 1학기 실시간 온라인 교양영어를 수강하고 있는 67명의 성적 하위그룹 학습자들을 대상으로 플립 러닝과 수업 운용에 대한 만족도를 알아보기 위하여 학기말에 두 번의 설문 조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 실시간 온라인 교양영어 수업에서 학습자들은 플립러닝 수업은 학습자들에게영어에 대한 흥미를 높일 수 있게 했을 뿐만 아니라 수업 참여도도 적극적으로 할 수 있도록 이끌었다. 이러한 학습 태도의 변화는 학습자들로 하여금 자기 주도적 학습 태도를 갖출 수 있게 해 주었다는 결과를 보이며 높은 만족도를 나타냈다. 이는 대부분의 선행 연구의 결과와 일치하였다. 둘째, 하위그룹 학습자들이라 할지라도 플립러닝에 대해 높은 만족도를 보였는데 이 결과는 선행 연구의 결과와 배치가 되었다. 셋째, 학습자들은 플립 러닝 수업단계 중 사전 학습 단계에 가장 높은 만족도를 보인 반면 수업 후 단계 활동에 가장 낮은 만족도를 보였다. 향후 연구에서는 수업 후 학습 활동에 좀 더 많은 연구가 진행되어야 할 것으로 보인다. 본 연구는 실시간 온라인환경에서 플립러닝을 적용해 보고 그 결과를 바탕으로 향후 포스트 코로나 시대의 수업 설계에 도움이 될 것으로기대해 본다.
