[Purpose] This review aimed to identify differences in the effects of co-intervention with resistance training (RT) and protein supplementation according to sex and provide meaningful information for future research on the development of exercise programs to improve muscle volume and muscle function. [Methods] PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar were searched to identify clinical and nonclinical studies that assessed the effects of RT in older adults with sarcopenia; these studies were published between 1990 and 2023. Cross-sectional and double-blind studies (randomized controlled trials, RCTs) were examined in this review. [Results] The effects of parallel intervention with RT and protein supplementation on muscle volume and physical function were found to differ according to sex. Both males and females had improvements in muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical function after RT and protein supplementation; however, many studies found a greater increase in muscle volume and function in males than in females. Such difference may be due to differences in physiological characteristics between males and females. [Conclusion] Based on the findings of this review, the effects of combined intervention with RT and protein supplementation on muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical function to differ according to sex. Owing to these sex differences in the response and physiological characteristics caused by the parallel intervention of RT and protein supplementation, such differences must be considered to maximize the effects of RT and protein supplementation.

This review analyzed sex differences in muscle function and body composition changes caused by resistance exercise interventions, with a view to providing meaningful information for future research or development of effective exercise programs to improve muscle function and to achieve body composition changes in people with obesity. PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases were searched for clinical and nonclinical studies on the effects of resistance exercise in humans with obesity published between 1990 and 2023. In this review, we showed sexspecific differences in muscle response and body composition changes after resistance exercise interventions in men and women with obesity. After the resistance exercise interventions, men showed more muscle strength, physical function, and muscle mass increase than did women. In addition, after resistance exercise interventions, men showed a greater decrease in body fat mass than did women. These sex differences are likely due to differences in physiological characteristics, such as hormones, skeletal muscle type, insulin resistance, myoprotein and metabolism. As few studies have directly compared sex differences in responses to resistance exercise interventions in humans with obesity, future studies will need to compare sex differences in responses to resistance exercise interventions directly and investigate these comprehensively to prevent and treat obesity effectively.
An Analysis of the Effects of Aerobic Exercise on Obese Men and Women through Systematic Review

This review aims to provide meaningful information for the development of effective exercise programs for improving body function and changing healthy body composition in obese people. We searched PubMed and Google Scholar databases for a study investigation of aerobic exercise effects in obese people. This review included randomized controlled trials. Studies in which men and women data are mixed and cannot be obtained by gender, studies in which animal experimental , studies in which the number of samples is less than 8, studies in which exercise methods are not clearly presented, and literature written in languages other than English were excluded from this study. This review revealed gender-specific differences in body function and body composition changes after aerobic exercise intervention in obese men and women. After aerobic exercise intervention, men showed greater improvement in muscle and cardiopulmonary function than women. Also, after aerobic exercise, men showed a greater decrease in body fat than women. These differences appear to be due to various individual physiological characteristics. However, since few studies have directly compared the response of obese people to aerobic exercise intervention by gender, further studies are needed.
Effects of Resistance Exercise on Older Individuals with Sarcopenia: Sex Differences in Humans

sarcopenia affects tens of millions of adults worldwide, with a reported prevalence of 10-50% among older adults. A decrease in muscle strength and function due to aging reduces physical performance, causing pain and disease. Accordingly, interest in the treatment or prevention of sarcopenia through resistance exercises, which have been found to be effective in improving muscle strength and hypertrophy, is increasing. However, given the individual differences, it is difficult to determine the optimal RE method. Currently, the importance of personalized resistance exercise (RE) prescriptions is emphasized, and research on sex/gender differences needs to be conducted. Our review focused on the effects of resistance exercise on muscle strength, muscle hypertrophy, and muscle function in older adults in relation to sex differences. In this review, we aimed to analyze sex differences in the effect of RE on older adults with sarcopenia and provide meaningful information for future research on exercise programs for individuals with sarcopenia.
