Objective : The aim of this study is to evaluate anti-cancer effects of $Ampelopsisradix$ Extract (AE) on human lung cancer A549 cells. Method : The apoptotic activities and cell growth arrest activities of AE were measured using 3-[4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The molecules involved in apoptotic process were assessed by western blotting. Result : Treatment of AE potently reduced cell viability in a dose-dependent manner in A549 cells. AE (100-500 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$) resulted in apoptosis via activation of caspase 9 following PARP cleavage in a time-and dose-dependent manner. The levels of Bax and Bad levels were increased by AE with a concomitant decrease of Bcl-xL. In addition, AE at the low dose (30 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$) significantly inhibited cell growth in the presence of serum. Conclusion : AE has the potential as a therapeutic agent against lung cancer.
The Effect of the Base of Support on Anticipatory Postural Adjustment and Postural Stability

Purpose: This study was to identify the anticipatory postural adjustment (APA) mechanism which is represented by the onset time of trunk muscles and the displacement of the center of pressure (COP) according to the different base of support (BOS) during upper extremity movement. Methods: Thirty healthy subjects (14 males, 16 females) participated in this study. The movement was performed for 10 trials during each of various BOS (shoulder - width double leg stance, narrow base double leg stance, tandem stance, non-dominant single leg stance) at the 1.2 Hz frequency. Electromyography was used to measure muscle onset time and biorescue was used to measure characteristics of the displacement of COP. Surface bipolar electrodes were applied over the right deltoid anterior, right latissimus dorsi, both rectus abdominis, both internal oblique and both erector spinae. The data were analyzed by repeated one-way ANOVA and Duncan’s post hoc test. Results: The study has revealed following. There were significant differences with muscle onset time in each BOS (p<0.01). There were significant differences in characteristics of the COP in each BOS (p<0.01). Conclusion: The study found that the more narrowed the basis requires the more rapid anticipatory postural control in contralateral postural muscle when the upper extremity movement is performed.
ESR Spectroscopy에 의한 감마선 조사된 향신료의 확인

본 연구에서는 ESR spectroscopy를 이용하여 향신료의 방사선 조사여부를 확인할 수 있는지를 알아보았다. 4종류의 향신료(고춧가루, 마늘분말, 백후추분말, 흑후추분말)를 0, 1, 5, 10, 20 및 30 kGy의 Co-60 감마선을 조사한 후 Bruker Win-EPR spectroscopy에 의하여 free radical 농도를 측정하였다. 실험결과 방사선 조사된 고춧가루, 백후추분말, 흑후추분말은 특징적 신호로서 triplet이 측정되었고, 방사선 조사된 마늘분말은 singlet 신호가 측정되어 비조사시료와 확실한 구별이 가능하였다. 조사선량이 증가함에 따라 ESR 신호의 크기는 직선적으로 증가하였으며, R² 값은 0.9757~0.9933의 범위의 높은 값을 나타내었다. 또 이들 신호는 상온에서 97일간의 저장기간 후에도 관찰됨으로써 ESR spectroscopy를 이용한 향신료의 방사선 조사여부 판별은 실온에서 3개월간의 저장시에서도 측정 가능한 방법임을 알 수 있었다. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy was used to investigate the effect of irradiation dose on the ESR signal intensity of irradiated spices and to identify the stability of radicals after storage. Red, white and black peppers, and garlic powders were irradiated with doses of 0, 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 kGy at room temperature using a Co-60 irradiator. Triplet ESR signals were observed in irradiated pepper powders, while singlet ESR signals were observed in irradiated garlic powders. Those characteristic signals were not detected in non-irradiated samples. The strength of ESR signals linearly increased with the applied doses (1~30 kGy). Highly positive correlation coefficients (R²=0.9757~0.9933) were obtained between the irradiation doses and the corresponding ESR signal intensities. The signal intensities of irradiated samples were stable even after 97 days of storage at room temperature.
